He spends more than he earns. He buys the latest phones and eats at the best restaurants. He gives expensive gifts too. Djafar wants to be better with money. His mother always says "You need to save for a rainy day." He needs to follow her advice. He is motivated to do so. He set up an emergency fund and he plans on putting 10% of his salary every month. However, before he can start saving, he needs to first pay his debt. He borrowed money from his brother, two of his friend, and even a colleague. "How much money do I owe them?" He asksed himself. He did the math. It came to 98 000 da. That's more than twice his salary. He needs to cut back on his spending. It's a new habit that he needs to form. To kick start this project, he is doing a "no spend month" challenge. It will be extremely difficult because he usually doesn't even go a day without spending."Thank you for listening.Join us on Instagram @zalamit.podcast

Thank you for listening :)Join us on Instagram @zalamit.podcastKey Words: packed / orderedText:"We stopped at a roadside restaurant, in the middle of nowhere. We sat at the only table available. Who would have thought a restaurant in a location like this one would be packed. The waiter come to our table and said.“ Hi and welcome. Today’s specials are roasted chicken, lamb skewers, liver skewers, soup, French fries, rice, and Hmis.”He was wearing a butcher’s uniform. He dabbed the sweat on his forehead with a napkin.“Thank you. Could we have a minute to decide.” Said Dahman“Of course, would you like me to start with the drinks while you decide. We have soda, juice and homemade tea.” The waiter said.“We’ll have some Hammoud please, and a bottle of water.” Dahman said.“Coming right up. ““What’s that thing he said at the end? Hmaizz, was it?” I asked.“Hmis. It’s a type of salad. It’s made with roasted peppers, tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. You eat it with bread. It’s delicious, if you don’t mind a bit of a kick.” Dahman said.“I don’t mind. I love spicy food.” I said.We ordered and the food arrived quickly, thankfully. I was drowning in saliva from the smell of the barbecue. The skewers were covered in cumin seeds and chili powder. The Hmis was excellent. When the bill came, I tried to pay. I had my wallet ready, but Dahman refused to let me pay, like every time. I’m grateful and uncomfortable at the same time."

Key Words: Might / Probably won't

    Text:

    "

    • M: So next Tuesday we’re going to meet Pharmacity to negotiate a new deal.
    • R: Really? I thought we had a meeting with Saida, next Tuesday.
    • M: We were supposed to but that needs to go on the back burner for now. There was an unexpected turn of events, Pharmacity has a new management team and we need to meet them before the competition gets hold of them.
    • R: Okay. That’s very short notice but I can figure it out.
    • M: Where is Dr. Bourass?
    • R: She should be here any minute now. Oh there she is.
    • Dr. Bourass: Hi everybody. I finished the presentation and I made projections. We should get a 200% increase in profit once we join forces with Pharmacity.
    • R: Don’t you think you’re getting a bit ahead of yourself? I mean, we know nothing about the new management.
    • Dr. Bourass: If they are smart they will take our deal.
    • R: They might refuse though.
    • Dr. Bourass: They probably won’t.
    • R: But they could.
    • Dr. Bourass: They are not going to.
    • M: Okay, I like the confidence, but we still have to prepare for every scenario.
    • Dr. Bourass: They will probably ask if we are ready to start production right away which we are. They will have no reason to refuse. I hope Ismail isn’t coming with us. He could ruin it.
    • M: He will be there. We don’t want to burn any bridges.
    • Dr. Bourass: Fine, but I’m going to present the project by myself.
    • M: You’ll have the stage all to yourself."

  • Episode #23: Nawal as a Child I Algerian Podcast | Learn English |تعلّم الإنجليزيّة بالدّارجة الجزائريّة

Good job! You are trying to learn and that is awesome!

    Key Words: Childhood / neither...nor...

    Text:

" I remember when Nawel was a child, she used to love talking to old people. She would call them gramps and granny, make silly faces at them and ask them numerous questions. She used to play dominos against Uncle Moha. He would let her win most of the time. He knew she was a sore loser. She was a special child. She did enjoy the usual games like hide-and-seek, playing catch, hopscotch and all sorts of ball games, but she also enjoyed less common activities. For instance, she used to love writing poetry. We don’t know where she got that from. Neither her mother nor I loved poetry. Also, there used to be a live wrestling show every Saturday and she couldn’t wait to watch it. She was a huge fan of The Undertaker. Her favorite food was spinach for some reason, which was quite strange for a young child. When I think about her childhood, I can hear her laughter, I can see her sticking her tongue out, I can almost taste the candy that she used to share with me behind her mother’s back. She is a strong and caring woman now. She still loves talking to olde people and teasing them, making them laugh. She became a hospice nurse. "

  • Episode #22: Road Trip I Algerian Podcast | Learn English |تعلّم الإنجليزيّة بالدّارجة الجزائريّة

    Key Words: journey / breeze

Text: "Last week, my friends and I went on a road trip to Annaba. We needed to quench our thirst for adventure after a whole year without traveling. We left El Djelfa at the crack of dawn so we could reach my friend Djafar’s native village by lunch time. He’s originally from the region of Biskra and still has many uncles and cousins living there. Driving there was amazing. It was impressive to see the millions of date trees. We ate at the best local restaurant. It felt good to break the journey. We were getting tired of being stuck in Salim’s old car. We got out and stretched our legs, bought a bunch of snacks and carried on our way. We bought some cakes, some salted peanuts and some dates. Djafar ate most of them. Soheib didn’t eat much because he didn’t stop talking. He gave us a headache. We got to Annaba at around three in the afternoon and went straight to the beach. We didn’t even stop at the hotel to register or to unpack. Annaba is gorgeous. Salim jumped in the water head first. The breeze felt amazing. The weather was good during the whole stay. The temperature was between 25 and 30 degrees, compared to 45 back home. We challenged ourselves to swim in at least ten different beaches, so every day was a new adventure. Djafar bought a kids tube and floated all day. He called himself “The Happiest Man at the Beach.” We couldn’t stop laughing at him."

    Thank you for listening :)

Key Words: Out of the blue / Unannounced

    Text:

"My friend Salsabile showed up to my house yesterday, out of the blue, unannounced, and said she was staying with me for a week. Of course my door is always open,, she can always come to me when she needs a shoulder to cry on. After all, that’s what friends are for. But this is so unlike her. I don’t know what she’s going through but it can’t be good. I asked her several times what’s wrong but she refused to tell me. I am worried about her. She brought one bag with one change of clothes and nothing else. I made a bed for her on the floor in my room and she went to bed early. This morning when I woke up, she wasn’t there. I don’t know what to do now. Should I call her parents? Should I call the police?"

Key Words: Driver's license / book a spot

    Text:

"Hi, I have a question; what are the fees for a driver’s license?

    • It costs 20 000 DA to get one.
    • And, how long does it take?
    • Well, first you’ll need to pass a written exam. For this you can come to class or you can learn on your own. You will decide how long you need to memorize all the rules and signs. Here’s a booklet that explains everything and there’s also an app if you prefer. There’s an exam every Saturday at 2 pm. You’ll need to book your spot in advance. It get full pretty quickly. Then, you’ll need to have twenty two hours of driving with our instructor. You can only do one hour at a time so, the fastest you can do is a month. You’ll then have to pass the driving exam.
    • Okay, that’s reasonable. What’s the driving exam like?
    • It’s divided into three parts. You’ll need to successfully park in a tight spot. I know, that’s the hard part. You will also need to drive in the city and the last part is driving uphill and downhill.
    • I think I can learn to do that.
    • There’s an age limit. I’m not sure you’re aware.
    • I know I look like a teenager but I’m actually twenty years old.
    • You are You look very young. Would you like to register now?
    • Yes, please.
    • Okay, fill in this form please. It’s basic info, your name, date of birth, address, phone number and email, hum, that’s it. You can go online and book the classes that work for you.
    • Thanks, I’d also like to talk to Mr. Slimane.
    • Sure, his office is in room 108. It’s the last door on the left.

  • Episode #19: Space X

Key Words: Manufacture / Straight out of

    Text:

"Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) is an American aerospace company. They manufacture rockets and satellites. They also offer space transportation services. It was founded by Elon Musk in 2002. Its headquarter is in California. The goal of the company is to reduce space transportation costs and make the colonization of Mars possible.

Can you imagine living on Mars? It seems like an idea coming straight out of a Sci-fi movie. I hope it happens during my lifetime. I want to see it happen. I have always been fascinated by space and space exploration. I learned the names of the planets before I knew the names of colors. When I was eight years old, my mother gave me a telescope for my birthday. We would go on the roof of the building and look at the stars. I wanted to become an astronaut. Huh, that didn’t happen. Now, I am happy to just watch movies about space. My favorites are The Martian and Interstellar."

  • Episode #18: Breakups I Algerian Podcast | Learn English |تعلّم الإنجليزيّة بالدّارجة الجزائريّة

Key Words: coping mechanism / Give back

    Text:

" Whether the relationship lasted three weeks or three years, breakups can leave us feeling heartbroken, lost and even physically ill. While there’s no magic formula to make the pain disappear, having healthy coping mechanisms in place is essential to getting over your ex and moving on to the next chapter of your life.

To help you on your way, here are three things you can do to help you cope with the stress of a break up: 1- Write or Talk it out: it is important to get your feelings out and gain clarity 2- Do things YOU love: Often in relationships we forget who we are, now is the time to rediscover yourself. 3- Give back: take care of somebody else to keep your mood high. Doing good feels good."

  • Episode #17: Truth or Dare I Algerian Podcast | Learn English |تعلّم الإنجليزيّة بالدّارجة الجزائريّة

    Let's be friends: @zalamit.podcast

Key Words: Worse/ Worst / Turn

"Do you know the game “Truth or Dare”? It’s not a game for the faint of heart. You need to be brave to play it. I usually love it because you discover so many things about your friends if they choose Truth and it’s very funny when they choose Dare. We played it last Sunday with my friends and this time it wasn’t fun at all. When I chose Truth the first time, they asked me if I had a boyfriend. That was easy, I just said no. When I chose Truth the second time Mariam asked me “Who are you in love with?” Omg I hate her for that because I told her in confidence who I was in love with. She knew it was a secret. Worst of all, he was sitting right there. I turned crimson red, like a tomato, and whispered his name. I said “Amir”. They all laughed. It was awful. I tried to make it look like a joke but that only made it worse. I will never choose Truth ever again. When it was his turn he didn’t choose Truth, he chose Dare. Marwa dared him to run to the middle of the road and dance. And that was the end of the game."
