  • 548: The 4 Best Ways to Silence Your Inner Dialog

We all have one, absolutely every one of us.  Some people have a loud one that is incessant in its talking.  Others have found a way to hush the little devil.  And devil is an appropriate word, because it tries to tell you to give up, it raises hell with your self-esteem and your desire to live a better life.

What is it?  it's your inner dialog of course.  That never ending voice that criticizes you, tells you to quit.  It tells you not to make waves, to be like everyone else.  It is absolutely without value.  In fact it takes away from life.  The words it speaks are not accurate or true, yet we believe them.  At least you did, until today.  Today I talk about ways, 3 ways, to send that voice packing.

    Things You Will Learn
    • Where your inner dialog comes from
    • What it's function is
    • 4 Ways to Make it stop

  • 547: Finding Pleasure in Another's pain

t is so prevalent that there is a word for it in German.  It's called Schadenfreude.  Simply put, it's the pleasure derived from the misfortune of another person.  Germans may have a word for it, but it's prevalent in the United Sates as well.  Social scientists express that it may be a common everywhere.

Today I talk about why it is occurs and how to make sure that you don't succumb to this common societal pressure.

  • 544: Give Until it Feels Good: Which Scientists Say is Immediately

Giving is not a new topic to ZEN commuter, not by a long shot.  How I am tackling it today though is.  In the past I have talked about how it makes you feel good, has you living longer, etc.  And these things are all absolutely true.  But why does it make you feel good?  Today I present a great article by the Wall Street Journal that gets to heart of giving from a biological stance.

It talks about a variety of studies that contradict what many people used to think, that giving goes against our nature.  Many of the scientists offer a variety of studies that tell most emphatically that the brain thrives on donating.

In this Episode, You Will Learn:
    • Three theories of the selfishness of man
    • How your brain activates when it gives
    • Why the brain sees giving a survival instinct

  • 543: Water: It is Absolutely That Important

There are thousands of beverages to choose from when you are thirsty, even when you aren't.  Which is probably why so many people are dehydrated.  There are thousands of options but none of them are a necessity.  That's right, without water you would die.  So why do so many people opt for a diet coke or beer instead of water?

They clearly don't have any idea that it can cure a headache, release toxins from your system or help you lose weight.

There is so much to know, and I will talk about it in this episode.

  • 541: Cortisol: How not to Stress about the Stress Hormone

Cortisol plays an important part in a healthy metabolism, the formation of memory and the body's treatment of inflammation.  It is wonderfully efficient.  It even gets the body ready to face a threat or run from that very same fear.

All good stuff.  However, when the body is flooded with Cortisol it has anything but a healthy role in helping the body.  In our hectic world the brain sees everything as a threat and accordingly pumps out Cortisol in large quantities.  There needs to be a way to stop it and that is what I will talk about today.

In this Episode, You Will Learn:
    • What Cortisol is
    • How it serves the body
    • Overview of the Flight or Flight response, the stress response
    • 3 ways to limit the cascade of Cortisol

  • 540: Healthy Weight and Fitness: Are You Really Hungry or Simply Eating.

Joy comes from living an intentional life.  If you think about the times when you were the most harried, out of balance, it came from simply responding to stimulus that were thrown at you.  You were responding but not actively making choices based on what was best for you.

I bring this up because many times people eat not because of hunger but because of habit or other societal factors.  If you want to maintain your health and be lean you need to understand hunger in a complete way.  That is what we will do today.

In this Episode, You Will Learn:
    • The definition of hunger
    • What happens to your body when you are hungry and full
    • How inadequate sleep creates a weight producing hormone imbalance
    • 8 reasons you eat when you are not hungry
