Members and friends of Acid Horizon meet with Stuart Kendall to discuss the work of 20th century writer Georges Bataille. Bataille is a unique figure in French thought whose work spans various milieus from literature to politics. As an opponent of fascism, liberalism, and the real-existing communism of his day, he and his associates endeavored to found a new politics which drew together disparate threads from French anthropology, mythological studies, and the work of Friedrich Nietzsche. The discussion with Kendall centers upon Bataille’s use of Nietzsche as a primary theoretical mediator.  Kendall also details Bataille’s relationship with Albert Camus and ventures some possible applications of Bataille’s thought amidst current political crises.

On this episode, Will and Adam from Acid Horizon speak with Thomas Nail about his book “Marx in Motion: A New Materialist Marxism”. They discuss the origins of Marx’s theory of matter based on his doctoral dissertation on Epicurean philosophy, his critique of rigid atomism, and his dynamic theory of matter in motion that reveals its innate capacity for transformation. Thomas explains the centrality of the notion of movement to notions of labor and valuation in the first volume of Marx’s Capital, as well as his innovative claim that Marx’s theory of value was not one based on labor, but one based on seeing value as a delusion of seeing the products of productive motions as commodities whose qualities were entirely disconnected from those processes—a delusion grounded in the very origins of value itself in primitive accumulation, dispossession, appropriation, and enslavement under Racial Capitalism. Thomas’ work challenges the various revolutions in Marxist interpretation since Engels and boldly asks how we can transform a Marxism based on movement, to a movement based on Marxism.

Daniel Tutt sits down with the prolific writer and thinker Richard Seymour, Co-Founder of Salvage Magazine and author of The Meaning of David Cameron (2010), Unhitched (2013), Against Austerity (2014) and Corbyn: The Strange Rebirth of Radical Politics (2016). 

Since 2016, Seymour has turned to Lacanian theory in his writing and analysis of contemporary politics. We discuss what he finds valuable in psychoanalytic theory, the recent fractures over the trans movement in the Lacanian field, the patriarchy question, Oedipal politics, family abolition, meritocracy and Richard's next book project The Little Red Self-Help Book. We conclude with a discussion on the future of the far right.

Landon Frim and Harrison Fluss are joined by interviewer Daniel Tutt to discuss how philosophers are thinking the ecological crisis. Fluss and Frim argue the two dominant strains of thinking ecology today, Accelerationism and Gaian philosophies are ultimately inadequate frameworks because they reject the human frame as grounding politics; each seeks to subordinate the human in favor of a wholly alien other, either in the form of an anarchic nature or a dynamic technology. To transcend this strange coincidence of opposites, Fluss and Frim make the positive case for a Marxist humanism that is rationalist without being anthropocentric. This conversation is centered around their new book Prometheus and Gaia: Technology, Ecology and Anti-Humanism.

On this episode of Convergences Adam from Acid Horizon is joined by Palestine Action activist and researcher Kieron Turner to discuss the work of Cedric Robinson and his landmark 1983 work Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition. We’re going to be covering Robinson’s life and work, his dialectical analysis of the historical and ideological phenomenon of Racial Capitalism, his critique of Marxist Historiography, and the life and history of the Black Radical Tradition. Also discussed is Robinson’s critique of the Eurocentric biases of certain Western Radicalisms, the critique of nationalist ideology, and his exposition of the Black Radical Tradition as the articulation of consciousness as a material force. That is, an emancipatory force of analysis, consciousness, and culture, as generated through the world historical experience and resistance of African peoples. Finally, we discuss the work of Palestine Action, which includes their ongoing campaign against the arms manufacturer Elbit Systems, which recently resulted in a weapons factory being shut down in Oldham, England. Kieron explains how Cedric Robinson’s thought has impacted his own work in theory and praxis, and how Robinson’s thought helps to orientate theory towards mass movements.
