Zerothreetwo Conversations: Interviews with the Creative Class

Ever since starting Zerothreetwo, I took the habit of taking a look back at the year that was, and setting goals for the upcoming year. The goals aren't there as a benchmark for success, but more to set the tone of how to start our year.

In many respects, this habit has been a success. While many goals haven't been reached, the mere fact that we've strived towards them have allowed Zerothreetwo to become what it is today.

So here it is, a recap of 2019 (personal and Zerothreetwo), and my goals for 2020.

Just like last year, I thought it would be a good idea to end the year with a quick recap of the best episodes of 2019.

Osamu explores his personal philosophy in life through his uninhibited surrealist depictions of the ocean and the cosmos on canvas.

When I schedule interviews, I have an agenda in mind. Generally, there's something about the guest that I want to learn about, but every now and then, the conversation becomes something larger, something more important, and uncovers a story about something bigger.

That's what I got in my conversation with Gama Rae. Initially, I wanted to learn about the ins and outs of eSports today. Gaming has changed immensely compared to what it was twenty years ago. These days there are national tournaments, huge cash prizes, and a viewership that rivals huge sports leagues. I learned about all that, but I also got a peek into the darker side of gaming. This is a male dominant sport that doesn't play kindly to women in it. Gama Rae, a very accomplished gamer in her own right, experienced this male harassment first hand. Her story was an awakening for me.

In this episode, we talk about the eSports industry, how she was treated by her male competitors, how eSports is a difficult yet possible source of income, and the difference between male and female gamers.

"It's not what you do during your 9-5. It's what you do during your 5-9."

I'm not sure where I heard this, but it resonates with me because it made me realize that you can still do what you love despite having to do other things. There are ways around balancing a full time job and your passion.

This balance is what I wanted to discuss with Uzi Emperado. Not only is he able to figure out that balance, but he also happens to create compelling art. His Punk Darth Vader piece is still a favorite of mine, and it currently hangs in our bedroom wall. Uzi is a talented artist as well as a freelance illustrator. When I heard that he got a full time job, but still managed to continue his art, I was curious as to how he was able to do it.

In this episode, we talked about his start in illustration, balancing a full time job with art, porngrind, and future projects.

Hofer's study of Japanese calligraphy and ink painting began almost a decade ago‭. ‬He has mounted several one-man shows in this genre of art‭. ‬

"Ink Notion" highlights Oj Hofer's ink artworks such as Kanji and Hiragana calligraphy in the five traditional styles, humorous Zen Drawings, converging Enso Circles and transfixing Ink-on-Abaca bas relief.

Traditional schools have been using the same system for a hundred years. There was a good reason to do it back then, but that system is outdated and worse yet damaging to the children of today.

This is particularly important to me because I have two young boys. Frankly, as a parent, I don't know what to do. As much as I want the best for them, there doesn't seem to be many options. So after hearing Hannah Martinez-Florendo talk about today's school system in the Tropical Futures Forum, I had to invite her to do an interview. I was curious to hear her insight as a parent and also as an educator. She has an art school called Artastic which is informed by her perspectives with how we should teach our children.

In this episode we talked about her personal experience in school, the morbidity of the traditional school system, the importance of good teachers, and rock climbing.

As is typical with most conversations, topics bounce around and have nothing to do with each other. This is what we try to do with the podcast. Talk without any agenda and with the intention to connect with another human being in a real way.

That's why I really enjoyed this interview with Dexter Sy. After re-listening to the episode, I was surprised by the number of topics we covered and how far ranging the conversation was. It's always fun when a guest sits down and decides to have a conversation as opposed to an interview. I didn't expect this because I knew of Dexter Sy back in the days when he used to write music reviews for Bite Magazine. He was honest. Some would say brutally honest. So after meeting him in person, it was not what I expected, but a good surprise nonetheless.

We started it talking about parenthood, then touched on his music endeavors, then talked about his stint writing music reviews for Bite Magazine (he wrote a review about Rescue a Hero too), then we talked about corporate life, and even a hint of marketing.

Lacking in Cebu are businesses that are true partners with a community. A lot of businesses are run like hardware stores. They put wares on the shelves, wait for people to come in, and sell them stuff. That's it. No community building, no partnerships, no sense of giving back. Nothing against hardware stores, I'm just using them as an example. There are a ton of businesses that all they want to do is sell you a product.

Handuraw never felt like that. They've managed to not only survive, but thrive in the restaurant business. There aren't many that have been in business for more than 15 years, and definitely not a lot that put community as a focus. It is a storied venue that has supported countless communities. Not just in music, but also in film, literature, charity groups, etc. With this in mind, I talked to Eric Smith, the managing director of Handuraw. I was interested in his perspective and how he has managed to grow it to what we know and love today.

In this episode, we talked about the importance of community, how to be approachable as a venue, how to grow a business, the challenges faced by Handuraw, and about their other ventures like Hale Manna and Books and Brews.

Have you ever looked at artwork and asked yourself, "Where does this come from?" The same thing can be said for all the pop culture characters that you know and love. Sometimes the answer is complicated, but other times, it's as simple as hanging out with friends over a few drinks.

When I first spoke with Thom Jopson, fantasy and surreal painter, we walked around the gallery looking at his artwork. His stories from each piece made his characters come alive. Not only did it seem real, it made it familiar. "I've been in that bar, I've hung out with those people, I have a friend just like that," I couldn't help, but relate as he was talking about each piece.

In this episode, we talk about treating art as work, how to balance inspiration with distraction, painting seemingly mundane situations, and making the real surreal.

Eventually, I hope to bikepack around the Philippines. It's not something I'll do anytime soon, in the short term, maybe I'll bikepack in short spurts, but a long trip with my bicycle will have to wait. One of these days when my children are older, with any luck, we can all go.

For now, I'm happy to live through other people. When I heard about the Cebu Divide, my interest was piqued. The Cebu Divide was done by the folks from PacGear. They started in the North of Cebu then made their way to the South, but instead of passing through the coastal roads, they made their way through the middle of Cebu, up the steep mountains, and in many cases, through dirt roads and paths. I interviewed Prockie Genovia, Larry Honoridez, and Kekel Villalon of PacGear. They were the group who organized the Cebu Divide.

The Cebu Divide is a huge physical feat. It took them seven days, 394.7km, and 12,404m of elevation gain.

In this podcast, we talked about the preparation to do the Cebu Divide, the inspiration of doing such a thing, women in cycling, and cycling through the Cebu mountains.

In addition to texture and surface engagements, Pongase incorporates gestural lines, figurative drawings and other graphic elements to complement the rough, vulnerable and potent visual field that he explores with much empathy and restraint. Thom Jopson shows off his fantasy and surreal inclinations in his latest exhibition, Unchained Melody. Luxuriant characters and ornate sceneries compliment the peculiar stories told by each piece. Thom is such a clever and dexterous storyteller, with his art expounding on the sensational lines of magic realism and fantasy.
