  • Aladdin movie spoiler free review and audience reaction at Alamo Drafthouse
When they announced a live action remake of Disney's beloved Aladdin, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical. They did a great job with Jungle Book, but dropped the ball with Dumbo.
Then the early trailers showing an extremely blue Will Smith had a lot of people up in arms. The backlash from that trailer online was crazy.
I walked into Aladdin expecting to be underwhelmed. After the first 20 minutes I have to admit I was really liking the direction they were taking. There were a few changes from the original cartoon, but that is okay. I don't want to see a scene for scene reshoot of something I have already seen.
There were some new characters and some new songs. I particularly like how they made Jasmine a much more independent and strong female character rather than just the object of Aladdin's affection.
I also like that they didn't whitewash the movie. They didn't go out and cast a bunch of popular white characters to try to sell the movie on their names. For me, it made the movie that much better.
Let's talk about Will Smith as the Genie. Robin Williams left some big shoes to fill in that role. I was concerned if Will Smith was up to the task of making the character his own while still paying homage to the original frantic nature that Robin Williams brought to the table. Overall, I was very impressed with Will Smith's version of the Genie. He brought just enough crazy to counter-balance the all powerful aspect. I really connected with the Genie and found him to be a likeable character. Kudos to Will Smith.
You don't have to take my word for it though. All of the audience members we spoke to, both young and old, really enjoyed Aladdin. It was a great movie from beginning to end. If you like the classic Disney cartoons, you won't be disappointed with this live action remake.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts. If they are good, we will use them on the show. The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Penultimate Patrol | Episode 14 | kinda spoilery review
This episode is titled "Penultimate Patrol". I had to look up the meaning of that word. Now that I know the definition, the title is very fitting. Penultimate just means next to last. As this is the next to last episode... I get the joke.
Just when we thought we were rid of Cyborg, they bring him back in. Why must DC punish us?
We get a little bit of the impetus behind why Eric Morden became Mr. Nobody...unless that is just something he made up to help bait his trap for Doom Patrol.
Cyborg re-installs GRID and is able to locate the Beard Hunter using the tracking device Rita planted on him. They find that he is now a resident of Danny the Street.
Jane was about to torture some answers out of the Beard Hunter when Danny the Street confessed he knew where Chief was being held. Mr. Nobody had him in the white space on the comic book pages. The place where there is no content.
Flex Mentallo is able to open a portal into the white space (after a brief mistake of flexing the wrong muscle and causing a little inadvertent pleasure). Once inside the white space the Doom Patrol confronts Mr. Nobody. They believe they have defeated him only to find out it was part of his plan.
Mr. Nobody convinces Chief the only way to escape is to "Let the truth set you free". Chief agonizes over this decision, but ultimately comes clean with the group. The accidents that gave them powers and changed their lives forever.... weren't accidents! The Chief orchestrated each event.
Will the group support Chief? Will they leave him with Mr. Nobody? Will they rage and destroy the Chief in front of Mr. Nobody (which is probably what he wants anyway? Let us know in the comments.

  • SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 7 | Kinda spoilery review
Episode 7 is a roller coaster ride of weirdness. Nick kidnaps his ex-wife, who is pregnant. We don't know who impregnated her yet, it is kinda hard to tell in the middle of a latex orgy.
Orcus and Sonny want her back since she is instrumental to both of their Easter plans. Although, their plans differ just a bit from each other.
Hailey is upset that her parents are keeping things from her. That is the final straw that breaks her and she runs to Smoothie as she views him as the only one being truthful to her.
Meanwhile, Happy is being taught the facts of life by Bo Peep. Happy is kinda clingy afterwards and Bo Peep takes off.
Can't wait to see how the Wishees tie in to all of this weirdness. They have already established a connection between them and Orcus throughout history. They have obviously been grooming Sonny Shine to be the sacrificial lamb for him for quite some time. Really interested to see how they bring this season to a close.

  • DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Flex Patrol | Episode 13 | kinda spoilery review
Last episode our intrepid heroes busted Cyborg...and Flex Mentallo... out of the Ant Farm.
Rita talks Cyborg into re-installing his GRID operating system after the nanites start turning him more into a robot than human. Cyborg decides to stay with his dad in the hospital after nearly beating him to death when Mr Nobody got into his head. Rita stays with Cyborg to help him through this tough time.
Meanwhile, back at the mansion... Jane and Robot Man try to get Flex's memory to kick in. They do everything they can think of to trigger his memory. The only thing that works is bringing his wife back to him. Short lived reunion as she has had her body wired so if she comes back in contact with Flex, she dies.
We also find out that Larry and the Negative Spirit are in a symbiotic relationship. They need each other to survive.
The best part is when Mr Nobody gives his soliloquy at the end. Everything he says proves we have been right all season long. He says the past episodes have all been character driven drivel. He rips Cyborgs face off the Doom Patrol ad. He even promises we will be getting more superheroes doing superhero stuff! Can't wait!
Do you agree with us that we have sat through enough backstory and should start seeing the Doom Patrol start doing heroic things to stop Mr Nobody? Let us know in the comments.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 6 | Kinda spoilery review
Happy just keeps getting weirder by the episode. This wasn't our favorite episode, but it was still better than most of the drivel that is on TV nowadays.
In this episode we get to see what happens when you try to torture a Wishee. We also get to witness Happy becoming a man. Pay attention to the bar scene. The Smoking Man Baby is voiced by none other than, Weird Al Yankovic!
Smoothie also drives the wedge deeper between Hailey and her parents. Oh yea, Nick finally finds out that Smoothie is still alive... and is he surprised!
I can't imagine Hailey escaping this holiday with her mental facilities in check. That poor girl is being put through the wringer at school and at home.
We still recommend watching Happy as it is so different from every other show on TV right now. Big thanks to Grant Morrison for creating this world for us to enjoy.
If you agree with us say so in the comments! If you don't agree with us, tell us why we're wrong!
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Cyborg Patrol | Episode 12 | kinda spoilery review
Episode 12 is another in a long line of Cyborg bashing we do. Even though this episode had his name on it, he was not the best character in it.
Cyborg managed to get himself captured by the Bureau of Normalcy and taken to the Ant Farm. That isn't gonna look good on his resume to join the Justice League.
Cyborg's dad devises a plan to get him out of the Ant Farm, but it involves using the Doom Patrol as bait. The Doom Patrol agrees to go through with the plan.
The Bureau plans to send Robot Man to the scrap heap, remove the Negative Spirit from Larry, and one of the agents is seeking his revenge against Jane. Needless to say, none of it works and Doom Patrol is able to save the day.
While inside the Ant Farm, they come in contact with Flex Mentallo. Flex is the guy that is missing from the ad in the comic book that Danny the Street gave to Doom Patrol.
This sets up the next episode titled "Flex Patrol". Just a guess, but I think it's gonna be about Flex Mentallo.
Let us know in the comments if you agree that Cyborg is useless in this story so far. If you disagree, let us know too.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • Phoenix Fan Fusion 2019 preview
Phoenix Fan Fusion is one of our favorite big comic cons to attend. They are considered one of the big 6 comic cons, even with the slight decrease in attendance last year.
Just like the mythical Phoenix, they are rising anew from the ashes of last year. They have a new name now... Phoenix Fan Fusion! They have also stacked their featured guest line up with some pretty impressive names. Jeff Goldblum, Paul Reubens, John Barrowman, George Takei, Elijah Wood, and Billy Dee Williams just to name a few.
Those featured guests will be up on the third floor in the Hall of Heroes. While you are fanboying/fangirling over your favorite guest you can also check out all the fan clubs/cosplay groups there. Star Wars always has a big corner with the 501st, Rebel Legion, R2 Builders Club, and the Mandalorian Mercs all joining together for an unforgettable experience. There will be fan clubs for Judge Dredd, Firefly (Browncoats), Doctor Who, and so many more. You can spend an entire day ( and a load of money) on the third floor.
If panels are your thing, you will find more than you can possibly attend. Most panels take place on the second floor. You name the topic and I'm sure they have a panel for it.
The ground floor is gonna be taken up mostly with food vendors and a few stray panel rooms.
The exhibit hall is down one floor. The convention center is separated on the ground floor by a street, but it is connected underground. The exhibit hall is enormous. You can spend the better part of a day just shopping.
in the lobby area underground there is always some interesting interactive stuff set up. Make sure to look around there before you run into the exhibit hall.
Las year they had a beer garden/food truck area set up on the street between the two convention center sides. That was really a nice perk last year. Being able to step outside under cover of a tent and grab a beer and maybe some tacos was nice.
More and more of the businesses and hotels surrounding the event area are starting to participate in the festivities as well. There will be tons of con specials and off site events.
Best thing is, tickets are readily available. You can get a full event pass for around $85, which is a huge bargain.
If you plan on cosplaying, please read their rules regarding what can and can't be brought into the convention center. Security of the guests and attendees are very important.
You can find us probably in one of the autograph or photo op lines. If you see us, come talk to us. We'd love to hear from you.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 5 | Kinda spoilery review
This week is mostly Nick running around tripping balls. He is hallucinating like crazy and is walking around with no pants on. He eventually buys some fishnet stockings, which is a disturbing picture in itself.
We also see Sonny Shine beat Dayglow Doug to death with his own golden microphone. We also get a sneak peek at all the blackmail tapes Sonny has in his collection. He has some high powered names in there so it is no wonder he gets what he wants done.
We see Orcus/Scaramucci's story-line get interesting. Orcus is taking over the prison. Scaramucci wants to rid himself of Orcus and begs his cellmate to kill him.
This is definitely not one of our favorite episodes. We are still trying to piece together what exactly the pink "Patrick Starfish" looking creatures are and what they have to do with Sonny. Hoping we find out sooner rather than later.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Frances Patrol | Episode 11 | kinda spoilery review
This is another in the long line of episodes where we bash Cyborg for being unnecessary to the story. Difference is we are adding Rita to that list now as well. She hasn't really used her powers to help much of anything.
Good news is this isn't another of the "weird Chief's friends list". Larry (Negative Man) and Cliff (Robot Man) finally get closure on their past lives and will hopefully be able to move on.
Larry visits his old boyfriend from before his accident after much coercing from the negative spirit. Come to find out his boyfriend led a very happy life, but always wondered what became of Larry.
Cliff finds out his ex-crew chief (Bump) had raised his daughter after both him and his wife died in the car crash. He had some resentment towards Bump for sleeping with his wife and then going on to raise his daughter. The only thing that his daughter got from him after the crash was a watch. She had the watch engraved and gave it to Bump as a gift. Cliff and his wife died while she was still very young so Bump is the only real father she remembers.
Bump, being a typical Florida redneck, decided to wander into the swamp to encounter a legendary alligator named Frances (hence the name of the episode). Of course the alligator ate Bump, watch and all. She was despondent that she didn't have the watch to remember Bump. Cliff takes it upon himself to find Frances and get the watch back.
(Read this in your best Ted Knight voice) Meanwhile back at the Doom Patrol HQ... Rita notices a man missing from an ad in a comic book that was given to Cyborg by Danny the Street. Rita was able to tell them it was a muscle man character from back in her day. We believe this muscle man is Flex Mentallo who has crossed paths with Doom Patrol in the comics.
Jane and Cyborg track down Flex's family and go to question them. When they get there Cyborg is kidnapped by the Bureau of Normalcy and taken to the Ant Farm.
This was not a bad episode, but it is not our favorite either. The fact that Cliff and Larry finally get closure should help the store progress towards saving the Chief without them lamenting about their sordid pasts.
Do you agree with us about Frances Patrol? Did you really like it and if so why? If you didn't like it tell us why also.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • Avengers End Game movie review and audience reaction at Alamo Drafthouse
Avengers End Game is the culmination of a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. This movie really ties up all the loose ends and gives us a really nice end point.
No matter which Marvel movie is your favorite, you will see reference to it in this movie. Avengers End Game is a fun walk down memory lane of Marvel. The final confrontation is an epic battle for the future of the Marvel Universe.
Patrick and I really enjoyed Avengers End Game. It isn't just us though, everyone we talked to that watched it really loved the movie. We didn't encounter one bad review. Our only warning is don't drink too much soda during the movie cuz you won't want to miss a minute because you have to pee. Even the strongest bladders are tested by this movie.
Do you agree that Avengers End Game gave us a satisfying end to the big Marvel run of movies? Or were you less than thrilled with the movie? Let us know in the comments.
