  • DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Hair Patrol kinda spoilery review
Doom Patrol has no problems bringing on some of the more obscure characters from DC Universe. Episode 10 - Hair Patrol is no exception.
In this episode we are introduced to the Beard Hunter. This guy can track anyone down through space and time by ingesting their essence.... through their beard hair. Just imagine that clump of gook you use Drano to clear out in your bathroom sink. This guy eats that stuff and is able to know everything about you.
The Bureau of Normalcy recruits the Beard Hunter to find the Chief. There are several cut scenes that give us some more background on the Chief. We find out he spends a few years in the frozen wilderness with an ancient tribeswoman. This woman seems to be immortal and has the ability to summon a huge "owlbear" looking creature.
This episode is not one of our favorites, but it is still pretty interesting. It seems like the Doom Patrol is not getting any closer to finding and saving the Chief. It doesn't seem like they are really focusing very hard on the task either. The episodes seem to be just enough to keep us interested until the next week. There better be a big payoff in the season finale or we might not watch season 2. You can string us along for a while, but you eventually need to give us the goods.
Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol seems to be wandering aimlessly? Let us know in the comments.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • SYFY | HAPPY! Season 2 Episode 3 and 4 Review | Kinda spoilery review
We got caught up this past week running El Paso Comic Con so we are doing a review of two episodes together in order to get caught up.
Happy! episodes 3 and 4 see a lot of Nick breaking his promises. We also learn how Sonny Shine got his show. Smoothie makes some progress becoming Hailey's friend. But most importantly.... we learn that Sonny Shine is hung like a horse!
Do you agree with us on our assessment of Happy so far? Let us know in the comments.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • DC Universe | Doom Patrol | Jane Patrol kinda spoilery review
Episode 9 is by far our favorite episode of season 1. This episode is very focused on Crazy Jane's mind. After her Karen persona gets pulled back into the Underground (this is what they call Jane's mind), none of the personalities wants to go to the surface (what they call being the dominant personality). This causes her body to go into a catatonic state.
Robotman is able to enter her mind through Negative Man's energy. Once inside her mind we see that some of the personalities look like Jane and others do not. We are introduced to a few new personalities that haven't gone to the surface. Most of them do not like going to the surface as they find the real world stressful to deal with.
We also find out that the personalities are able to commit suicide by going to the well. One of the personalities, Miranda, had done that. Miranda's station is filled with lots of dark and gory imagery. Jane is at the end of her rope and is going to visit the well to end it all.
Robotman is able to track her down to the well and helps her face the root of all her problems. As a child she was sexually abused by her father. She repressed all those memories until years later she was again sexually abused by a priest at a church. This explains her hatred of the church in the Nurnheim episode.
With Robotman's help, Jane is able to stave off the suicidal tendencies for now. When Jane pops back to the surface we discover the others had some sort of kerfuffle. I imagine we will find out what happened with them in a future episode.
Do you agree with us that this is the best episode so far? Do you also think it should have been aired sooner in the line up? Let us know in the comments below.
We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • Doom Patrol episode 8 on DC Universe kinda spoiler free review
We mentioned Danny the Street a few episodes back and now we finally get to meet him.  Danny is a non-binary, gender-queer, sentient street.  He has the ability to teleport anywhere and blend into existing streets seamlessly.  He communicates through different signs on the street.  He plays host to a myriad group of characters who have been shunned by society.  In return for them living on Danny Street, they do their best to keep him happy and entertained.
Another of Crazy Jane's personalities is introduced in this episode. We meet Karen who is obsessed with romantic comedy (romcom) movies.  Every time her personality is in charge she runs off to get back together with her boyfriend just like in the movies.  We find out her powers are kinda like a hypnotizing thing where she flashes her eyes and the people immediately think what she wants.
This was another episode of What is Cyborg contributing to the story.  Eight episodes in and we still believe he could be completely removed from the story with no affect on the plot.  We are really hoping we will get to see some kind of closure to the whole Chief is missing thing before the end of the season.
Do you agree with us that Doom Patrol is weirdly good, but also seems to be dragging a bit right now?  Let us know in the comments.  We have also added a Google Voice number where you can call and leave us your thoughts.  If they are good, we will use them on the show.  The number is (575) 323-1332.

  • SyFy channel Happy Season 2 Episode 2 review - a little spoilerish
Episode 2 sees our friend, Nick Sax, fail horribly at keeping his promises at staying straight and sober. It all starts when his ex-wife can't block the visions of what happened to her in season 1.
She drops Hailey off with Nick unexpectedly. He is not prepared for a day with her. Mostly because there are human organs in his fridge that he plans to sell.
Nick leans on Happy for advice on what to do with Hailey. After her traumatic kidnap experience in season 1 she hasn't been able to see her imaginary friend. Happy suggests they go to build a bear. Hailey is bored out of her mind which goes to prove she has outgrown Happy.
Nick takes her to see horses at an Off Track Betting (OTB) business. They start by betting imaginary money on horses. Realizing it was a bad move, Nick leaves with Hailey only to be confronted by someone that threatens his family if he doesn't pull a job for him.
Long story short, Nick ends up killing a lot of people with Hailey in the car. She seems okay with it as long as he is truthful with her, which he isn't. He doesn't want to corrupt her with his lifestyle.
This episode carries on with the wacky humor and over the top gore. There's just something about an imaginary friend chastising you as you commit unspeakable crimes. Oh yea, the Sonny Shine/Smoothie story line gets a little creepier also. Can't wait to see where this season ends up.
Did you enjoy episode 2 as much as us? Do you like Happy even though you can't explain why? Let us know in the comments.

  • DC Comics Shazam! Movie Review and Audience Reactions at Alamo Drafthouse
Shazam, aka Captain Marvel... but that is a different story, is a superhero hearkening back from the Golden Age of comics. Shazam used to outsell Superman comics back then. Then for some unknown reason Shazam kinda faded into obscurity.
DC Comics attempted to reboot Shazam several times to no avail. They just couldn't seem to catch that same lightning in a bottle (pun intended) they had in the beginning. There were even whispers that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson would be playing Shazam's enemy, Black Adam.
When they announced Zachary Levi would be playing the title character, I had some worries about him pulling it off. I had only seen him in Chuck, as Fandral in the Marvel movies, and most recently as Benjamin in the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel series. I was really hoping DC could build on the success of Wonder Woman and Aquaman.
All I can say is WOW! Shazam pulled a page right out of the Marvel movies book, right down to the bald villain. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the previous DC movies. They just didn't seem to resonate with the audience at large. Let's face it, the movie has to make money at the box office or the studio won't invest money into future movies of the same kind. That's just the business.
Shazam was a great movie from beginning to end. Asher Angel and Zachary Levi played their parts to perfection. I really connected with the Billy Batson character. I enjoyed following his journey from downtrodden orphan to realizing his powers and forming a family with the other foster kids. It had the right mix of action and humor. I would love to see Shazam cross-over into other DC Comics superhero movies. Maybe we will get lucky and they will make a movie based on "Kingdom Come".
Did you like Shazam as much as we did? Let us know in the comments.

  • Doom Patrol episode 7 on DC Universe kinda spoiler free review
Doom Patrol continues it's course into Crazyville.  In this episode titled "Therapy Patrol", our heroes are all suffering from self-doubt that Mr. Nobody implanted in their minds.  We see the first scene played out from each characters point of view.  Robotman is the first to figure out they are falling into the same trap as the original Doom Patrol.  He suggests they all do a group therapy and get their fears and innermost thoughts out in the open so it won't drive a wedge between the team.
The others reluctantly agree to participate and we learn a little more about their backstories.  Not a lot more is learned, but it does seem to add some texture to their origins.  We also learn that Mr. Nobody is not above using anything to derail their efforts to save the Chief.
We still believe that Cyborg could be taken completely out of this story and it wouldn't affect it at all.  It seems like Cyborg was thrown in just to add a character that the mainstream audience would recognize.  While it doesn't really hurt the story, it doesn't help it either.
Are you watching Doom Patrol?  Do you agree that Cyborg is a fifth wheel on this team? Are you liking all the crazy weirdness we have witnessed in this first half of the season? Let us know in the comments.
And while you're there please give us a "thumbs up" and share this with all your friends.

  • Walt Disney Pictures Dumbo Movie Review and Audience Reactions at Alamo Drafthouse
Dumbo is one of the cornerstone cartoons of Walt Disney Pictures. It is the movie that helped them rebound after Pinocchio and Fantasia both lost the studio money in 1941. Dumbo is almost as iconic as Mickey Mouse. He is one of the characters that is readily recognizable from just a silhouette. That is one of the reasons I was surprised Disney decided to make a live action retelling of Dumbo.
Patrick and I were both indifferent to Tim Burton's Dumbo. Even with a star studded cast of Danny Devito, Colin Farrell, and Michael Keaton we were not enamored with the movie. There were several references to the original movie, the best one being the dancing pink elephants. Disney also let Tim Burton poke a little fun at Disneyland with his theme park called "Dreamland". Disney is usually really strict about any mention of or allusion to their intellectual property, so I was happy to see they allowed this.
For us, there just was no emotional connection to any of the characters in the movie. I fully expected to start ugly crying when they separated Dumbo from his mother. When that moment occurred in the movie my eyes didn't even water up. For me the whole movie just seemed very flat and unemotional.
After talking to the audience we found we were in the minority. Most of the movie-goers gave the movie high praise and really enjoyed it. We did notice that nearly all the people we spoke to had NOT seen the original Disney Dumbo cartoon. Not sure if that has any direct correlation, but it was just a weird fact we noted.
Online review sites are putting Dumbo around 50% approval. Closer inspection reveals most of the reviews are either very high and glowing reviews or the are very low and scathing reviews. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. It seems you either love or hate Dumbo. I judge a movie by what I would do if it was playing on TV. If I was flipping through the channels and came across Dumbo... I would keep flipping channels.
Our take is, this version of Dumbo was made for those who are unfamiliar with the original. This movie will introduce Dumbo to a new generation of movie goers. This is likely the plan Disney had all along. Instead of re-hashing the old story again, shake it up and make it modern so it appeals to the new generation. This is how Disney will remain a powerhouse in the entertainment field. They are replenishing their audience base. For old fogies like us.... the original still exists. I ain't mad at ya Disney, but I still prefer the original. According to the audience members we spoke to I can highly recommend this movie for families to take the kiddos to. Maybe show them the original first.
Did you see Dumbo? Did you like it? Did you see the original? Let us know in the comments.

  • SyFy channel Happy Season 2 Episode 1 review - a little spoilerish
The first season of Happy on SyFy was a pleasant surprise for me. All the previews looked really silly and didn't do much to capture my interest. On a whim I decided to give the first episode a view. All I can say is WOW!
I immediately binged the whole first season. I learned that Grant Morrison was one of the creators of the show and it all made sense. I told everyone I know to watch Happy. The interaction between Patton Oswalt(Happy) and Christopher Meloni(Nick Sax) just seems to work so well.
If you didn't watch Season 1 let me get you up to speed. Chris Meloni is an ex-cop that has a drug, alcohol, and violence problem. His daughter ends up being abducted by a weird villain called "Very Bad Santa". He has connections to the bigger bad guys "Smoothie" and "Sonny Shine". Nick's daughter has an imaginary friend named Happy. Happy seeks out Nick to help him rescue her. For some reason, Nick is an adult that can see and talk to imaginary friends. If that sounds weird... it gets better. That is enough to give you the where and how about Happy. For more you'll just have to watch season 1 for yourself.
So, at the end of Season 1 Nick is reunited with his ex-wife and daughter. He wants to have a relationship with his daughter so he pledges to clean up his act. Season 2 starts with Nick stopping drinking, drugging, and whoring. He even gets a steady job, albeit as a cab driver. The first episode does a good job of setting up Nick's internal conflict of his past life and his desire to be a better man and father. We also learn that Smoothie and Sonny Shine are still around and up to no good. Looks like season 2 will be just as twisted and enjoyable as the first season. Thank you , Grant Morrison.
Did you watch Happy? Did you enjoy it as much as we did? Or did you think it was just meh? Let us know in the comments.
