Vol. 3: The 80's--It's No Fun Being An Illegal Alien Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting than others. Such is the case of Kevin Doyle, owner of the Celtic Ray Public House in Punta Gorda, Florida. Which, is perhaps the oldest Irish pub in the state. The local landmark pub is only part of his story despite it's 24-years on the Gulf Coast. It's not all pints, live entertainment, Fish-N-Chips and friends down at the pub. This is Volume 3 of our conversation where Kevin and I discuss what is an amazing journey. With his 30's ahead of him, a fateful night as a fill-in waiter and enjoying the area on holiday have made him want to stay in America. We'll discuss his first marriage, the arrival of his son Max, working at Disney's Epcot Center when it first opened and the curious and wondering tale that became the 1980's and his floating from job to job, place to place hiding out as an illegal alien in America. Join us as we explore the life and times of Kevin Doyle, Publican.
Our guest this week likes to flaunt his Schweddy Balls. Yep, that was his Trivia team name when we met a few years back at The Celtic Ray in Punta Gorda, FL. Scott Campbell, a true to life (yes, they exist) Librarian is an excitable and immediately endearing lad, which isn't something you think about when you say Librarian. Scott is from Manchester, New Hampshire and has family in SW Florida, hence how we met a few years ago. We became fast friends with a love of baseball, bourbon, the band Yes and other Prog Rock/New Wave staples and of course trivia. He's now a member of our fantasy baseball league. Enjoy as we talk and, he's challenged by this set of fun questions!
Volume 2: The 1970's Everyone has a story, it's that some are just more interesting than others. Such is the case of Kevin Doyle, owner of The Celtic Ray Public House in Punta Gorda, Florida. The local landmark pub is Kevin's lifework now 24-years old on. However, the story doesn't begin and end with pints, authentic food, live entertainment and friendship down at the pub. This is volume 2 of our series of conversations where Kevin and I discuss the 1970's and his story as a young adult. Reminiscing about music, jobs, family and history, including 'The Troubles' which included 'Bloody Sunday' in 1972. We discuss all sorts of topics including some family history, changing times and his coming to America. Join us as we explore the life and times of Kevin Doyle, publican.
It's time to play trivia again! This week's victim is Dana Crichton of the Celtic Ray trivia team 'Crichton's Titans' who are regularly one of the best each week at the pub. Dana is a one of the kitchen crew at the pub under normal circumstances and typically is one of the best when it comes to music, movies and state mottoes & geography. Listen and play along at home as she struggles and F-bombs here way through this fun podcast of Trivia Question with Friends!
Join us for tonight's installment of Trivia Questions: A Podcast with friends as Dan Bott joins us. Dan is a member of Drinking Like A Local, which used to dominate Stevie Tomato's back in the day and now haunts Potts Sports Cafe. Originally from Colorado, Dan moved to SW Florida to "retire" so to speak, but I've known him to have the job of teacher, bartender and now he's a TSA agent at RSW. He's been an emergency fill in host a time or two as well for ZIMCO Trivia. We hope you enjoy this episode and play along at home and see how you do against Dan!
Volume 1: Beginnings This latest podcast from ZIMCO Entertainment focuses on the life and times of The Celtic Ray Public House owner, landlord, host, story teller, salesman, decorator, painter, poet, purveyor, everyone's friend, joke telling maestro and "Daddy", the publican Kevin Doyle. If you've ever made your way to Punta Gorda, Florida, it's a must to tip a perfectly poured pint, enjoy an authentic made from scratch meal, listen to some live entertainment and converse with friends old and new at The Celtic Ray Public House. Therein you'll find the landlord & host, usually holding a freshly poured Guinness, moving about his "house", often greeting and sharing a story with guests, telling a joke or two and generally looking after his living, breathing, ever expanding and changing life's master work. The pub is in it's 24th year--a minor miracle--and it's been done by the will of this man and a dedicated army of family, valued workers, friends and fiercely loyal patrons. Many people call Kevin a friend and the joke at the pub goes "I know Kevin!" I have been blessed for 7-years to know him and he's allowing me to record his memories in his own voice. Come along for the journey to listen about the life and times, memories, stories, talk & appreciation of music, food, history and all things possible from the mind of Kevin Doyle. In this volume: We begin with some recent news and information in this new era of global pandemic and then look back at growing up Irish in England in the 1950's & 60's.
On this edition, we went Facebook Live for the first time in a simulcast. Not many of you saw it, so we come with the recorded version tonight for your at work or in quarantine version to listen to instead.
Thank God we have NFL Free Agency to talk about. With all the other sports taken away from us, we continue to talk about who's going where in the NFL including the QB carousal turning more and more. We also lament at when we might get some of our beloved games back and the potential for a loaded fall slate. Finally, Big B and I walk down memory lane a bit and talk about how we met. Yep, we've devolved to "Remember when". Join us, hopefully it's not all that bad.
This week's guest is an original member of one of the first ZIMCO Entertainment Trivia "Super teams". Once upon a time, the team to beat at the Celtic Ray was 'America's Wang', a 3-person team including David Iannotti. This week's split bill edition featured a few repeats, but David hadn't heard them. He also admitted he was really rusty on his trivia amid not really watching TV and having kind of checked out from the mainstream a long time ago. And, he did this on his lunch break! So we'll cut him some slack! Listen in, play along yourself and see how you do! Enjoy!
