by Elder Kevin Lofton (preached on September 29, 2024)
On the fifth Sunday night in October 2024, we were blessed to have Elder Kevin Lofton, Pastor of Buffalo Primitive Baptist Church in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, as our guest minister. In this sermon, he shows some comparisons given in the Bible between wine and the gospel. We learn that, much like properly mingled wine, the gospel is a mixture of many sweet truths that, when properly joined together, make glad the heart of God and man. However, when you remove something from the mixture, or add something to it, you create something that is neither palatable nor nourishing. Join us as we begin looking at this sweet example from Scripture.

When Elder Martin Onyoni came to preach for us in October 2024, after the sermon we asked him to take some time and update our church on the churches that have been established in Africa. Bro. Martin has labored faithfully among the flocks there, as well as several of our ordained elders and other Primitive Baptists from here in America. I wanted to post this update because it was so encouraging to us here at Zion church. We are also including much of the beautiful congregational singing that we had that night; it was a glorious night of worship, and I hope you are blessed to hear how the Lord is working in Africa!

Have you ever been homesick? In this sermon, Elder John Morgan Owens reminds us how it is too long for home when we are away from home. He shares how, when he was a child and spending the night somewhere overnight, a phone call from home would help lift his spirits. Likewise, Scripture teaches us that “good news” from our heavenly home refreshes and encourages us! Join us for this uplifting sermon.

As we began to see in the first half of this sermon, there are at least three different types of justification taught in Scripture: justification by grace, justification by works, and justification by faith. Since “justification” is a legal term meaning “not guilty,” we are made to think of “courtrooms” in which different types of justification apply. Justification by grace occurs solely by the sacrifice of Christ, and applies in the courtroom of God’s throne of eternal judgment. Justification by works, on the other hand, occurs in the courtroom of men’s opinions – how else will anyone know that we are indeed children of God, unless we demonstrate that by our works? Finally, justification by faith occurs in the courtroom of our own hearts and minds, and has to do with how we view ourselves and our relationship to God. Join us today as we consider this important doctrine.

In the sermons leading up to this message, we have been laying the groundwork for Paul’s examination of Justification by Faith in Chapter 4 of the Book of Romans. As we move on into this chapter, we find Paul using the example of Faithful Abraham to illustrate this Bible doctrine. In fact, Abraham is used many times throughout the New Testament to exemplify the life of faith. But what does it really mean to be “justified by faith”? The term “justification” is a legal term, which causes us to think of a courtroom. Join us today as we begin to see the context and the courtroom in which justification by faith applies.

In the last message from the book of Romans, we saw that our eternal salvation does not depend on whether or not we believe the gospel message. But does that mean that believing the gospel is not important? The answer is a resounding “NO!” It is extremely important that we have faith in the finished work of Christ as we walk in this sin-cursed world. Join us today as begin to look at the importance of faith, or believing the gospel.
