As we began to see in the first half of this sermon, there are certain aspects of ministry that apply to all children of God. “Ministry” simply means “service,” and it is clear in these closing verses of Romans 15 that Paul is not talking about the call to preach, but rather the type of service all children of God should pursue. In the first half of this message, we began looking at the ministry of giving. Today, we conclude our examination of this ministry, and move on to see that there is also a ministry of praying and a ministry of presence. Members of Christ’s church should be praying for their preachers and one another, and they should be attending the services whenever the church meets. As we draw to the close of Romans 15, we see that Paul emphasizes the subject of “ministry.” Remember that “ministry” simply means “service,” and in that sense every child of God has a ministry. To be clear, Paul is not talking about the calling to preach here, but rather is referring to the principle of service within the Kingdom. There are three basic ministries that Paul speaks of: the ministry of giving, the ministry of prayer, and the ministry of presence. In the final verses of Romans 15, Paul’s focus is on “ministry.” In the first half of this sermon, we primarily explored the ministry of Jesus to the Jews. We learned that His purpose was to fulfill the “promises made unto the fathers,” which most Jews of His day misunderstood. They thought it meant the elevation of the Jewish nation to political prominence, when in truth it meant bringing the Gentiles into the fold. As we continue in our exposition of the Book of Romans, we find Paul focusing on ministry in the remaining verses of Chapter 15. In verses 8 through 14, he tells us about Jesus’ ministry, the focus of which was ultimately not only to save both Jew and Gentile from their sins, but also to reconcile Jew and Gentile under the umbrella of the Church. Today, we focus primarily on the ministry of Jesus to the Jews (the “Circumcision”), and begin to explore some of His ministry to the Gentiles.
