In our study of the Book of Nehemiah, we have seen how the leadership of just one man can make such a difference in the Kingdom of God! In the final sermon of our exposition of this book, we will review the leadership of Nehemiah. In the first half of this message, which we are posting today, we examine the fact that Nehemiah’s leadership exhibited vision, and a devotion to prayer. We will conclude tomorrow by looking at how he followed God’s plan in the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and how he was a godly man in his personal as well as his public life. As we saw in the first half of this sermon from our exposition of Nehemiah, the zeal of the Jews in Judah had subsided after the initial fervor of the revival. Those who had rededicated themselves to the worship and support of the Temple had slipped back in to sin and error. When Nehemiah returned from a short trip back to the palace in Persia, he found personal and public falsity in the Temple service. But being the leader he was, Nehemiah addressed the problems in a godly manner, and restored them to the right approach to God. In the chapters leading up to this final chapter of Nehemiah, we have seen how the fervor of revival overtook the Jews that had returned to Jerusalem. Not only did they rededicate themselves to the Law and the work of the Temple, but they promised to do over and above that which the Law required! However, now we see that their leader Nehemiah has returned briefly to Persia, and that the zeal they had has subsided and they have begun to go back on those promises. As we saw yesterday, when Nehemiah returned for a brief time to Persia, the people he was leading in Jerusalem began to slip back into compromising positions with the world. In fact, they began to let the world and worldly things creep into their worship services! I’ve heard some preachers today make the statement, “The church is getting more worldly, and the world is getting more churchy.” May we ever strive to guard against compromising with the world, both in our public worship and in our private lives!

During his absence, the people of Jerusalem apparently lost their fervor of revival and began to slip back into the old ways. They began to compromise with the world. We saw yesterday that the fact of His coming and the timing of His coming should have been clear to the Jews of Jesus’ day. The first coming of Christ took most people by surprise. Even those who were learned in the Old Testament scriptures misinterpreted most of the prophecies, and expected someone far different than the Savior that came. In this sermon, we see that there were some things that ought to have been clear to the Jews and others about the first coming of Christ.
