Immediately after creating Adam and Eve, He told them to be fruitful and multiply. Of all of the different commandments that the Lord gave, we’ve probably kept that one better than any of the rest. We’ve grown from those original two people today to over seven billion and many more that have lived throughout history. So, we’ve done a pretty good job of keeping that commandment. In fact, all of creation is wired to reproduce. So too, as followers of Jesus Christ, we have been commissioned by Jesus to multiply. “Go and make disciples,” he said.

During the past two weeks, we have watched as George Floyd was ruthlessly murdered and then night after night as police have been injured and killed, shops and businesses have been looted and burned, and as various factions within our nation have boiled over with hatred for one another. We’ve listened as talking heads have argued back and forth on every news program. And all in the middle of a pandemic that, believe it or not, has suddenly been forced to the back seat. What’s really behind all this? As US citizens, we Christians are also impacted. What are we to think and how are we to respond? What’s a Christian to do?

Lamentations is a book we don’t read or preach from very much. With one exception, we don’t sing its words or write them in greeting cards. A lament is a passionate expression of sorrow and this book is a collection of five poems in which Jeremiah does exactly that. Lamentations is a book of heartfelt grief that Jeremiah wrote after watching his beloved Jerusalem get sacked and burned by the Babylonians in 586BC. An unthinkable disaster had become a reality.

Today, we’re back in Jerusalem where most of the disciples stayed even after Stephen’s stoning. Jerusalem is the church’s birthplace, it’s the mother church and the original disciples are overseeing its operation.

The last time we were in Acts, we saw the miraculous conversion of the Saul who will become the Apostle Paul. That was chapter 9. Remember that? It seems like an eternity ago. We won’t see him again for a while but once he returns, he will dominate the rest of this book. In the end of Acts 9, Luke’s focus returns to Peter who performs miracles by healing a paralytic and raising Dorcas from the dead while Saul is evidently in the wilderness preparing for ministry. Today then, we come to one of the most pivotal passages in the New Testament. To find out what it was and who gets in the church gate, please follow along in your Bible.

When we see one or two of the things Jesus mentioned as signs of His return, we might not be surprised. But when many of them occur at the same time, you can be certain His return is rapidly approaching and things are about to get interesting, indeed. I believe they are.

As we continue to go through this pandemic together, a number of questions arise in our minds, around our supper tables, and on Facebook. Why has this happened? Is God trying to get our attention? Is this the beginning of the Tribulation? And so forth. Today, we want to try to sort out as much of that as we can and see what, if anything God is trying to tell us. Many times when we’re walking or climbing in questionable locations, we walk lightly testing each step before we put our full weight down. Sadly, that’s the way many people treat Jesus’ resurrection. They kind of believe it, they want to believe it but can you fully trust a 2000 year old story that sounds unbelievable? And so they go through life tiptoeing around the second greatest event in all of history. My friends, it is absolutely trustworthy. It’s rock solid and you can put your full weight of faith and life and eternity upon it and we’ll talk this morning about why that’s true.
