Ghostly

023 John Dillinger

Listen Later

In Ghostly’s twenty-third episode,

Pat, Rebecca, and special guest Mondo explore the life and afterlife of John
Dillinger, one of the FBI’s first #1 Most Wanted criminals. Dillinger robbed
banks during the Great Depression while styling himself as a Robin Hood figure.
Not only did he escape capture many times, he also escaped jail when he was
captured. After he was finally trapped and killed by the Division of
Investigation (later known as the FBI) outside of the Biograph Theater in
Chicago, many claim to have seen his ghost. Does Dillinger’s spirit still haunt
this earth?

Questions explored in this episode:

Who was John Dillinger? How did his life of crime start? Who

was in his gang? How did he become so good at robbing banks? What made him different
than other bank robbers? How did he escape capture so often? How did he escape
from jail? When was he finally killed? Who betrayed him to the FBI? Where do
people claim to see his ghost? What evidence is there that his ghost has been
seen? What do people claim to see of his spirit? Does Dillinger’s ghost linger
here?

New Segment: Listener Mail and Questions! This week the hosts

and Mondo discuss Angelic Communications, based on a question from friend of
Ghostly, Bob After Dark. You can send us your story or question and we may feature
you in a future opening segment. Send your story or question to [email protected]. You can also
email us individually at [email protected]
You could be on a future episode of Ghostly!

After the poll results, listen to Rebecca tell a ghost story

inspired by a real story where Judy Garland met John Dillinger!

Then, listen to hear Pat give the history of John Dillinger

with comments from Rebecca and Mondo. We learn the answers to our questions about
Dillinger’s life and death as well as how he was finally caught.

Betty and Rosella Nelson, along with a large crowd, view the body of John Dillinger at the Cook County morgue, at Polk and Wood streets, in Chicago. In the days after Dillinger was killed on July 22, 1934, massive crowds lined up outside the morgue to get a glimpse of the notorious public enemy. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)

Time for the debate! Rebecca shares

evidence of John Dillinger’s ghost and how it haunts many places. Some say he
can be seen in the alley by the Biograph Theater (now called Victory Gardens
Theater) in Chicago. Others say they see his spirit in Crown Point, Indiana
where he escaped from jail, and then there are those that say he can be found
at the John Dillinger museum in Hammond, Indiana.  Listen to Mondo’s and Pat’s response to these
claims as well as everyone’s rating of each piece of evidence.

Be sure to stay for the whole

episode to hear the “Closing Arguments” to help you make your choice before
