Tonight I'm delighted to be heading down to Wiltshire in the south West of England to talk to farmer and current Deputy President of the National Farmers Union, Minette Batters.
We talk about her early life growing up on a tenanted farm with no succession, and how she was able to secure a long term farm business tenancy by offering to do-up two derelict cottages on the property.
We hear about her cattle herd of pedigree Herefords, and 100 Simmental cross sucklers, and how she juggles this with running a wedding and corporate events venue on the farm. We also find out which is the easiest to deal with - farmers or brides!
We then discuss Minette's involvement in the campaigning initiatives 'Ladies in Beef' and 'Great British Beef Week' and the runaway successes that they've become over the last 7 years.
We also talk about the National Farmer's Union, and how she initially got involved with the organisation, before becoming Wiltshire County Chairman, and eventually Deputy President. We discuss her role in detail, and what it involves, the challenges, as well as the importance of communication and building relationships, and how she'll stand for President next year.
All this and much more. Minette's a fantastic representative for British Agriculture, and it was a genuine pleasure to talk to her tonight.
Check it out folks..
