The 2016 Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire In Oakland, California That Killed 36 People

On December 2, 2016, an artist collective in Oakland, California known as the Ghost Ship, erupted into flames while a musical event was taking place on the makeshift second floor of the eclectic warehouse.  Thirty-six people lost their lives that night in what became one of the worst fire disasters in California history.  Hear the story of what happened, how this happened, who is responsible, and a little bit about each person who went to the Ghost Ship that evening for a night of music and never made it out.

UPDATE:

There is an Update episode published in the KD feed dated September 10, 2019.  In 2018, the warehouse's master tenant Derick Almena and his assistant Max Harris pleaded no contest to 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter via a plea bargain with the prosecutor.  However, the judge discarded the pleas and ordered the defendants to trial.  On 09/04/2019, a jury deadlocked on the charges against Almena, leading to a mistrial.  Harris was acquitted on all charges.  In 2021, Almena pleaded guilty 36 counts of manslaughter, given a 12 year sentence, but was released on time served.  In July of 2020, the city of Oakland agreed to pay a total of $33 million to the victims and their families.  In August of 2020, PG&E settled a civil lawsuit for an undisclosed amount, but for only 32 of the 36 victims.
