This week, we return from a relatively quiet year end break to outline some of the make-or-break moments that are beginning to take shape:
Senator Chuck Schumer announced that the senate will debate and consider changes to Senate rules this month, considering whether we can change the filibuster and pass the freedom to vote act and John Lewis voting rights act.
An audit from the 2020 election in Texas was quietly released, but unsurprisingly found nothing out of the ordinary.
Plenty of states are finishing up new election maps, with considerable changes being made in California, Virginia, Georgia, and Michigan. While some maps appear to only be slightly gerrymandered, the balance of power is still dangerously shifting towards republicans.

This week, we watched momentum stall out in congress as the year comes to a close:
Senator Joe Manchin announced he does not support Biden’s social and climate spending plan, showcasing how polarization and bureaucracy can paralyze our democracy and leaving us questioning what the future of the bill may look like.
The Freedom to Vote Act is also waiting to be passed, and when it comes to affecting redistricting, every day that goes by decreases its impact over the 2022 midterms.
Looking towards the rest of the year, we continue to see redistricting maps get approved, with decisions and announcements from key states expected to come later this week.

December 15, 2021December 14: Mark Meadows, Climate and Social Spending Bill, End of Year Deadlines, and more!
This week was quieter than usual as we wait for decisions to come down before the year wraps up:
The House Special Committee recommended charging Mark Meadows with contempt of congress after phone calls, text messages, and even Powerpoints revealed Meadow’s had plenty of information ahead of January 6.
President Biden, Senator Schumer, and others have continued to lobby Senator Manchin to pass the climate and social spending bill before Christmas, but final, last-minute revisions are still coming in, making the process long and difficult.
If Democrats want to preserve the child tax credit, they need to meet the December 31st deadline, a hard date that could either work as a forcing mechanism, or end up blotting out one of Democrat's biggest political wins.

December 08, 2021December 7: Hunger Strikes in Arizona, Texas Redistricting, Stacy Abrams, and more!
This week, we’re focusing on the senate’s upcoming final session, and looking towards the gubernatorial primaries and redistricting plans capturing our attention in the new year:
Chuck Schumer is facing lots of challenges as he aims to pass the Build Back Better bill and avoid extending the Senate’s final session of the year.
The Justice Department filed suit over Texas’ redistricting plan, with arguments claiming it was created with discriminatory intent. Currently, white Texan voters make up 40% of the population, but have a 60% majority vote over the districts, so this is definitely a case worth tracking.
We’re also keeping an eye on the gubernatorial primaries in Georgia after Stacy Abrams launched her campaign this week. On the republican side, David Perdue is running against Brian Kemp, and with a wildcard candidate also sticking around, it will be an intense race that may even get pushed into a runoff.

November 30, 2021November 30: Redistricting, Voter Suppression, Trump's Endorsements, and more!
This week, we’re diving into the highs and lows of local and national news as the Senate is back in session after the holiday break:
Congress must fund the government before Friday, with a bunch of large finance measures on the agenda, including raising the debt ceiling, the National Defense Authorization Act, and the Build Back Better Act.
With fights over partisan and racial gerrymandering continuing, redistricting maps are entering their final stages, but new maps alone could determine if democrats will lose or win the House in 2022.
A unique case about the new North Carolina voter ID law is being heard by the Supreme Court. The case will cover voter suppression, but interestingly enough, will also determine who can challenge and who can defend laws on behalf of the state.
