Who is Melchizedek, and why does this mysterious figure from Genesis matter so much to the book of Hebrews?

This week on 100% Maybe, we work through Hebrews 5–7 and unpack what it means for Jesus to be our Great High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek.” We trace Melchizedek from his brief appearance with Abraham in Genesis 14 to Psalm 110, look at why Abraham gave him a tenth, and dig into how we should hold this interesting mystery. 

But the point of these chapters isn't simply solving the mystery of Melchizedek. Hebrews is showing us why Jesus is greater.

Unlike the priests who came through the line of Aaron, Jesus' priesthood isn't based on ancestry, it is based on “the power of an indestructible life.” He is a permanent High Priest who always lives to intercede for us. Because of Him, we have a better hope and can confidently draw near to God.

Along the way, we talk about the Old Testament priesthood, Psalm 110, spiritual maturity, the warnings of Hebrews 5–6, and why all of this theology matters for ordinary people trying to follow Jesus today.

Jesus is greater, and because our High Priest lives, our hope is secure.

Jesus is Greater — Hebrews 3–4

What does it actually mean to enter God’s rest?

In Hebrews 3–4, the writer looks back at Israel’s journey through the wilderness as both a warning and an invitation. Their struggle wasn’t simply disobedience, it was a failure to trust God. And generations later, Scripture still extends the same invitation: “Today, if you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.”

In this episode, we talk about Jesus being greater than Moses,  what the Bible means by God’s “rest,” and why the promise of that rest reaches all the way back to creation. 

And after all the warnings of these chapters, Hebrews leaves us with an incredible invitation: because Jesus is our great High Priest, we can come boldly to the throne of grace.

Jesus is Greater. And because of Him, the way into God’s rest is still open today.

Hebrews opens with a weighty declaration about who Jesus is.  The Son of God, the fulfillment of God's promises, and the One through whom all things will ultimately be restored. 

For Jewish believers tempted to return to an old and familiar system of worship, the message was clear: don't drift away from the One to whom it was all pointing.

In this episode, we explore Hebrews 1–2 and the references the writer uses to reveal the supremacy of Jesus. We talk about why understanding who Jesus is matters for the way we live out our faith, and the freedom that comes from knowing the work of salvation has already been accomplished on our behalf. 

Jesus isn't simply another part of the story, He is the fulfillment of the promise and the One restoring humanity and creation under His authority.

In 2 Peter 1:1–11, Peter seems to start with the end in mind. Before telling us what to pursue, he reminds us of what is already true...what Jesus has done for us and what God has already given us. It’s from that foundation of grace that we’re invited to participate in the divine nature and experience real transformation.

In this episode, we talk about the qualities that begin to take shape in us as God transforms our lives, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection for one another, and ultimately love. We also look at Peter’s warning about what happens when we forget what Jesus has already done for us and how that forgetfulness can actually hold us back from the life we were meant to live.

Transformation doesn’t begin with trying harder. It begins with remembering what is already true. And what starts with the grace of Jesus ultimately shows up in the way we love people.

Jesus had a way of teaching that invited people to think deeper. Through parables, metaphors, questions, and everyday images, he engaged the mind to uncover what was happening in the heart.

This week, we look at Matthew 6:19–34 and what Jesus’ teaching about treasure, trust, and worry reveals about what we truly believe. We also talk about what it means for faith to be “practical” - not simply giving us steps to follow or rewards to store up for ourselves, but shaping how we live out the values of God’s Kingdom in the here and now.

In Acts 1 and 2, Jesus prepares His followers for something far greater than the kingdom they expected. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus reconnects us to the Father, and through the Holy Spirit, He empowers us to live, grow, and carry His Kingdom together.

Welcome Home is more than a sermon series, it's an invitation to step into a place where we're known, valued, and cared for.  

In this first episode, we unpack Luke 15 and Jesus' three parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. Together, they reveal something far greater than lost things...they reveal the true heart of the Father.

Jesus tells these stories to two very different groups of people: those who knew they were far from God, and those who believed they already had Him figured out. Yet His invitation is the same for both. The Father's grace is available to everyone, and His desire is not only to welcome us home, but to shape our hearts to reflect His own.

Through the stories of Jesus welcoming the lost, the early church living in authentic community, Christ's example of humble service, and the Spirit's work of transformation, we'll discover what it means to truly find our place in God's family.

As we wrap up The Greater Story, we look at the remarkable journey of Nicodemus. A respected religious leader whose encounter with Jesus challenged everything he thought he knew. His story doesn't unfold in a single moment, but through a process that moves from the darkness of private questions, to the partial light of growing courage, and finally to a public and powerful declaration of faith.

In this episode, we explore the irony that "the teacher" of Israel had yet to grasp the foundational truth of what it means to be born again. Yet, in His grace, Jesus met Nicodemus right where he was. 

Ultimately, we can be reminded that God is never limited by our fears, our failures, or our shortcomings. He invites ordinary people into His greater story, and He faithfully transforms us as we learn to trust Him one step at a time.

On this week's episode, we kick off a new series called 'The Greater Story.' 

We discuss the greater story God has been writing from the beginning, and the incredible invitation we have to find our place in it. Transformation begins with what God does in us, but it was never designed to end there. As God works through our faith, relationships, and obedience, we become links in a much greater chain, carrying His story into the lives of others.

But what happens when our own doubts or feelings of inadequacy cause us to disqualify ourselves? And what could God do through us if we simply trusted that, by His grace, there is a place for us in His story?  

It’s never too late to find your place in The Greater Story.
