100 Words Or Less: The Podcast

Anytime I can welcome an author on the show, I do but this one was a little contentious because Aaron Carnes offered up a full throated argument on why ska shouldn't get overlooked as a musical force. I personally think that ska, for the most part, is pretty awful (with some notable exceptions) but Aaron's book had me do a double take. We go into it here on this weeks show and truthfully, it was a pleasure. Aaron is incredibly thoughtful about his historical analysis of the subculture and we discuss some deep ska cuts, Reel Big Fish and ultimately the credibility of the genere. Buy his book and become educated and entertained.

Here is the first of our series of chats that we had at this years New England Metal and Hardcore Festival and I am incredibly happy to welcome back to the program, Jesse Leach from Killswitch Engage. At the festival they celebrated being a band for 25 years and played a career spanning set that was truthfully, incredible. Jesse sat down, jet lag and all, to discuss the weird history of the band, his recent nuptials and a lot more. Thanks again to the team at New England Metal and Hardcore Festival for making this all happen.

REBROADCAST FROM 2016:

The year is closing but that doesn’t mean we can’t have an amazing discussion with arguably one of the biggest guests in the shows history. Andy Hurley from Fall Out Boy, Sect, RaceTraitor and many more jumps on Skype with me one afternoon to discuss SO many things including but not limited to dealing with fame, friends as family and radical politics. It’s a wide ranging discussion that even uncovers a rumor that had been floating around since 2008 and we finally have it confirmed.

Long time friend of the pod, Nick Acosta joins the show this week. He is the owner and operator of New Morality Zine which is a self described "Loud Music Label" and has put out great releases from Stateside, Downward and a lot more. We approached our conversation a little differently by pontificating on the importance of hardcore/punk these days, running a record label in 2024 and the shoegaze/social media explosion of certain bands. A fun and insightful convo if I do say so myself.

Very pleased to welcome an old friend on the podcast in the form of Jordan Buckley from Better Lovers and previously from Every Time I Die. He's an accomplished artist, headbanger and thoughtful dude. He was WIDE open for this conversation and we go into spirituality, identity outside of what you "do" and full body headbangs. Better Lovers is coming for you, so be prepared.

We welcome Stin from Chat Pile onto the podcast this week for a few reasons. One of them being that their new record absolutely RIPS and you should listen to it now, it's called "Cool World" out on Flesner Recordings. Another reason is that he's an incredibly thoughtful and insightful human being about what art he's creating as well as the fact that ANYONE is paying attention to his band is a privilege. We discuss the best job he's ever had, making "art" for a living and what most people perceive touring to be (ie: tour buses).

One of the hardest working bands in the scene right now, we have Katerina from Escuela Grind on the pod this week. The band just released their new LP and is on the path to working even harder than they have before but we discuss the lack of location for the band, her experience as an only child and internet opinions. She's an insightful human and was happy to dig in deep with her!

Josh is a friend. Josh has created a ton of great music with bands like Neil Perry, Hot Cross, Joshua Fit For Battle and much more. Josh also had a pretty intense journey the last few years to where he didn't know if he was ever going to be able to play guitar again. We get into it all and discuss New Jersey greats, short song life and a whole host of other things. I am glad he is still here with us, and am so happy to share this conversation with you.

We welcome the incredibly entertaining and thoughtful front person from industrial/hardcore/weirdo band Uniform to the show. His name is Michael Berdan and he loves cigars, artistic expression and Kill the Man Who Questions. We talk about all things Delco (Delaware County), his eating disorder that he documents in full form on this most recent recordings and a WHOLE lot more. Dig in and engage.
