Small Groups are NOT the same as disciple-making.

Brian was deep into Small Groups, doing it the way everyone's been doing it for ages, when the Lord suddenly convicted him that he wasn't actually fulfilling the Great Commission with the work he was doing.

He chose the path of humility and allowed the Lord to strip him of all that he thought he knew, and to build him back up.

And the results have been incredible.

Brian's disciple-making went to the 4th and 5th generation and beyond, and he now helps churches make disciples who make disciples...again, getting to that magical 4th generation where growth becomes natural and expected.

99% of pastors admit that they're failing at this.

And it's one of the reasons nobody can tell me where to find a disciple-making movement that survives to the fourth generation and beyond...one that truly makes 'viral' disciples, and grows explosively.

Jesus never told us to build a church.

He told us to make disciples.

When we make disciples, they naturally form a strong church.

But if we get the order of those wrong, well, we're seeing the result of that today.

Is there one true church?

Or could Jesus have been talking about the different expressions of church in His parable about the wineskin that we read about in Matthew, Mark, and Luke?

I'm willing to say that maybe Jesus Himself preferred the old wine, and hey, maybe it is better in the older traditions in some ways. BUT...

There are just too many people who are new wine, who need new wineskins.

I couldn't possibly pigeonhole myself and feel pressured to suggest that everybody needs to fit into old wineskins.

This seems like something only theologians would worry about, but we're seeing it play out on the ground, and it's time to call it out.

The evangelical movement lacks a cohesive ecclesiology and can't seem to accurately or adequately define what "church" even is.

If we don't figure this out, we'll just keep losing people and be leaving so much potential on the table.

Sometimes it takes leaving a position to see what you've been missing the whole time.

That was certainly the case for today's guest, Cory Hartman.

After 13 years in a pastoral role, he entered a new chapter as a dad looking for a church for his family...

And it was only then that he realized just how much time, money, and energy went into making sure the Sunday morning service ran smoothly. And that that same amount of resources was NOT being dedicated to disciple-making.

Through a number of opportunities and new experiences, he ended up dedicating his time to building a network amongst disciple-making movements across the world, and continues that work with New Generations.

We talked about the lessons Cory learned after leaving pastoral ministry, how to make disciples in our ultra-urban environments in the West, and what we can learn from other disciple-making movements around the world.
