105 Unveiling the Podcast Interviewer's Dilemma: Narrative vs. Conversational Style Showdown

Listen Later

Welcome to Podtastic Audio! On this episode I'm going to talk about the two different styles of podcast interviews: The Narrative Stye and The Natural Conversation Style. And no matter which style works best for you and your show, remember to have fun!

Podcasting has emerged as a popular medium for interviews, offering a unique and engaging way to share knowledge, stories, and insights. When it comes to podcast interview shows, two distinct styles have gained prominence: the natural conversation style and the narration style. While both have their merits, they bring different dynamics to the listening experience.

Natural Conversation Style: The natural conversation style aims to simulate an organic and spontaneous discussion between the host and the guest. It prioritizes authenticity, a relaxed atmosphere, and a free-flowing exchange of ideas. Here are the pros and cons of this style:

Pros:

  1. Authenticity: Natural conversation style allows for genuine reactions, emotions, and unscripted moments, making the interview feel more personal and relatable.
  2. Engaging and Dynamic: The conversational approach creates a sense of energy and back-and-forth banter, keeping the listener engaged and entertained.
  3. Flexibility: This style permits diversions and tangents, enabling unexpected insights and new perspectives to emerge during the conversation.

Cons

  1. Lack of Structure: The absence of a rigid script can sometimes lead to meandering discussions or incomplete coverage of certain topics.
  2. Lengthy Episodes: Natural conversation-style interviews tend to be longer due to their open-ended nature, potentially testing the patience of time-constrained listeners.
  3. Potential for Information Overload: Without a tightly organized structure, essential points may get buried or lost within the conversation, making it challenging for listeners to extract key takeaways.

Narration Style: The narration style takes a more structured and controlled approach, with the host providing narration, context, and guiding the interviewee through a pre-determined script. Here are the pros and cons of this style:

Pros:

  1. Clarity and Focus: The narration style ensures a clear direction, allowing the host to cover specific points and ensure the interview remains on track.
  2. Conciseness: The structured format allows for concise delivery of information, making episodes more time-efficient for busy listeners.
  3. Enhanced Storytelling: By incorporating well-crafted narratives and transitions, the narration style can create a compelling and immersive storytelling experience.

Cons

  1. Reduced Spontaneity: The more controlled nature of the narration style may limit the natural flow of conversation, potentially sacrificing spontaneity and authenticity.
  2. Less Flexibility: The rigid structure may leave little room for unexpected insights or unplanned detours, potentially missing out on valuable perspectives.
  3. Potential for Sterility: Overly scripted episodes can sometimes lack the warmth and personal connection that comes from a genuine, unfiltered conversation.

Conclusion: Both the natural conversation style and the narration style bring unique qualities to podcast interview shows. The choice between the two depends on the goals, preferences, and desired audience experience. The natural conversation style thrives on authenticity and engagement, while the narration style offers structure and concise delivery. To strike a balance, some hosts combine elements of both styles, blending the strengths of each to create a captivating and informative listening experience. Ultimately, regardless of the chosen style, the success of a podcast interview show lies in the ability to provide valuable insights, foster meaningful conversations, and resonate with the audience.
