107. How to Be Good Enough (and Why That’s Good Enough)

If, by some impossible chance, you’ve missed it: the Olympics are currently happening. As I’ve been watching, I’ve been thinking a lot about perfection—these athletes are as close to perfection in their sports as is possible to be, and that’s why we celebrate them. In fact, “perfectionism” as a concept is something we tend to really value in our culture. However, not too long ago, psychologists considered perfectionism to be a form a neurosis—being “perfect” is unattainable, and the pursuit of it creates psychological distress. Unlike sports, life is not a finite game. There are no winners and losers, and you can’t be the best at everything. Olympians are experts in their fields, but they aren’t experts at all things. And just like olympians, maybe we need to embrace the “good enough” in our lives, and not just the things we have perfected.
