Overview: God the Father keeps a close eye on his vine. Bad branches he chops away and burns. Good branches, he prunes, a painful process of discipline. For they -our parents- disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12-10-11 The Father wants fruit, first the fruit of righteousness. Without that, we cannot do his work in the world. He needs holy people, not busy people. The Word of the Lord does the work, whether we take notes or not, whether we try to learn or just sit back and let it wash over us. Don-t underestimate the power of the word of God. The fruit of righteousness is good works. Before the new birth, our works are useless, but afterward they are a delight to God. Why- Because fruit proves that there is life and spiritual growth in that branch. Believing in Jesus really means believing into him. -I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.- John 14-19-20 And we want to cooperate with the process of moving deeper and deeper into him. Our total personality comes into the grip of God-s grace and we become more human. It-s a slow, incremental process done by -the ordinary means of grace-- observing the Lord-s Day with the Lord-s people around the Lord-s word. Overview: Isaiah from 52-13 thru 53 is the fourth Servant Song, a prophetic revelation about the coming Servant-Messiah. Today focuses on the fifth and final stanza in 53-10-12. First and last, God the Father speaks. Verse 53-4-6 are the theological core. This Servant is given divine status by saying he -was high and lifted up and exalted-, but is done to death- he is sinless but carries sin to the grave, he dies a criminal but is buried with the rich. Now to stanza five. Yes, an innocent man was killed through a miscarriage of justice. Peter preaching at Pentecost implies there is much more going on than that- this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God himself provides the -full and sufficient sacrifice- to fulfill the Mosaic laws. The sin offering had three purposes. Christ-s death on the cross fulfilled all three. No, not random, very purposeful. Here we see the love of the Father for us.But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The servant-s death was not final- three things happen after the Perfect Sacrifice is made. He is still at work for the Father and will close out history for his God. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. God is not disappointed in his Righteous One. So the mysteries of this Servant Song are only explained after 700 years. Because these words were fulfilled, we can be confident the rest of God-s promises will be, too. Also based on Acts 2-23, Leviticus 5-7, Hebrews 12-2, Mark 10-45-Romans 5-19, Romans 5-8, 1 Cor. 15-25.

Overview: These verses are known as the fourth servant song. Up to these verses Isaiah has been doing a -demolition- job on the whole world, and then getting us ready for the solution. He introduces us to this figure- the righteous servant. The servant stands in massive contrast to the rest of us when it comes to doing the will of God. He endures the punishment due to the people. He is not being punished for his own guilt or sin. We are willfully resistant of God- where we are willful the servant is willing. The lamb is symbolic of the sacrifice because of the sacrificial lamb whose blood spread of the doorposts of God-s used to signal the passover of the last plague in Egypt. Jesus is the lamb of God. It was John the Baptist who said -behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. His sacrifice was effectual because the servant was righteous. He was a willing sacrifice and the only sacrifice that could atone for our willingness to sin. Our Jesus about whom Isaiah is writing 700 years before he came, is giving a description of the fact that he will be rejected by his people, he would be despised, he will go to the cross and carry our grief and sorrows, he would by unjustly treated and he would do all this voluntarily. The righteous suffered for the unrighteous that he might bring us to God.

Overview: Starting with what Israel means to us and how we should regard Israel the sermon explained that the vine in the temple represented Israel and Israel-s Messiah. Israel was God-s servant and so too was Christ. He was the one man who did what Israel did not do- Christ is the true vine, the Israel of God. The Father-s primary purpose is fruit bearing. The Father does this through the word of the son. The true believer will therefore bear fruit as the father changes him through the power of his word. Overview: Jesus leaves his peace as a legacy to the church. He is the source of peace, goodness, blessing to the church. This peace, as Calvin explained it, is the serene countenance of God. The enemy is at the door, the ruler of this world is coming. We do not see the spiritual battle going on all around us. The prince of this world, the prince of darkness is coming dragging along with him his hellish weapons- betrayal, denial, desertion, injustice, violence, cruelty, death. But Jesus through his obedience and love of his father at the cross has given us his peace, and the assurance that he has been victorious over all the powers of hell. Overview: Isaiah has built up a profile of who God is that has left us dumfounded and wondering at the sheer majesty of God-s Glory. This God is unapproachable in his Holiness. How can a God as holy as Isaiah says he is accept a people as unholy as he has said we are- That conundrum is at the very heart of the human story . This text directly explains that it was by his wounds healing comes to us. This is the very heart of the Christian gospel- He is taking our place. This pardon is a gift- there is a double blessing in place of judgment. Overview: Isaiah continues to unfold the revelation that God gave to him about Jesus Christ - from the revelation that God will be sending a kingly figure and then to the surprising revelation that the kingly figure who is coming is going to appear as a servant. Isaiah begins and ends underlining the fact that the identity of the servant is God. It was also revealed that the servant will provide Spiritual cleansing for the entire world. Even so Isaiah revealed that people would despise and abhor him. And true to Isaiah-s vision they didn-t believe in him even knowing the miracles he did by the power of God. Even the apostle Paul did not at first believe. Only with the help of the Holy Spirit can you believe in him, and you are guaranteed that he will give you that help if you ask him for it.

Overview: We believe because of our relationship to the apostles known to us through the new testament given by the Holy Spirit. The holy spirit taught the apostles all things. Jesus gift to the apostles is that the spirit of truth would reside with them and in that way the triune god would be with them and his church from the time he went up to glory until he will returns to us. The truth is the knowledge of God which the Holy Spirit brings to our lives. The holy spirit uses the word to build up the believer. Through the help of the holy spirit the triune God dwells in the heart and life of the Believer.
