Overview: -It is impossible to explain the origins of Christianity unless Jesus Christ rose from the dead.- Several messianic movements around the same time which ended when the founder was killed. Some found a new leader- none claimed their dead leader was alive and they were still following him. Makes no sense.--MANY CHALLENGES- was he really killed- was the tomb really empty- was he seen alive or were they hallucinations- is it a recasting of some ancient mythology like Osiris- Historians laugh at these challenges on historical grounds. Examine them one by one. But if this creed is not true, we are in a pitiful state. text v.16-19--THE PROTO-CREED- Paul speaks of what he received, the very foundation of our faith, the normative statement of the essentials, both for understanding Scriptures and for salvation. He quotes a -proto-creed- which preceded the creeds we recite today. It is centered in Christ and anchored in Scripture. -Christ died and was buried- Christ rose and he appeared to many.- This is the seed or core of the gospel. The gospel is not something we live out- We simply take it. It was what was done for us -past- on the Cross, is done -new life- and will be done for all eternity.--DEEP ROOTS IN THE SCRIPTURES- This creed is also a lens which makes sense of all preceding Scriptures. His sufferings - Genesis 3-16 bruised, Psalm 22 forsaken of God, mocked by man, Isaiah 53-4-5 wounded and crushed. His resurrected eternal new life - Psalm 16-9-11 not left in Sheol, Isaiah 9-6 Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, 2 Samuel 7-16 David-s throne established forever, Ezekiel 37-25 Prince forever, Daniel 7-13-14 everlasting dominion.

Overview: This passage and most of the Bible is God preaching to his own people. The world needs the gospel, not judgment on sin.--WE NEED A REDEEMER- If God does not seem present to us, it is not that he is inefficient or incapable or indifferent-just that he is holy. So we don-t enjoy being forgiven- we don-t enjoy our relationship to him. We need our consciences sensitized. Sin is contagious and leads to frustration. We have no peace. Bad people can do good things because of -common grace-, God-s restraint of evil. Good people do bad things because of -radical depravity- Calvin. Read text vv 1-8 and hear Martyn Lloyd-Jones- -If you do not accept this description of yourself apart from the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, then there is no need to argue about it. You are just not a Christian-. -This description of man in sin -believers- is the simple, horrible truth. This is what sin has brought us to.- Deep down we are no different than the world, except--WE WANT A REDEEMER- Meekness is letting other people think of you based on what you know of how God thinks of you. How liberating- No need for pretense. But we must always challenge ourselves because of sin.--WE FIND A REDEEMER- Palm Sunday, Hosanna means -Save us-- Jesus comes to make war on sin, clothed in the armor of God and in his vengeance.----OTHER VERSES- 1 John 3-4-6, Romans 3-15-17, Matthew 5-21 ff, 1 Corinthians 5-11-13, 1 Peter 4-17, Romans 7-15-17, Psalm 51-3-4, Matthew 5-3-5.

Overview: Two themes run through the sermon. Dr. Goligher revisits each in the second half. First, GOD IS SELF-EXISTENT, he has glory in himself depending on no one. The flame in the burning bush -Exodus 3- doesn-t consume the bush- he does not need the fuel. Second, GOD IS SELF-REVEALING- an invisible God must put himself on display so humans can grasp something of his being. Silly things humans say---- What is the -cash value- of the text to me---- What is the take away thought for me---- Even, how do I glorify God- -if asked too early---- Is God about morality or morale boosting---- God can-t do his work in the world without you---- God needs to -be fed- as in other religions.--Jesus at the most intense moment of his human life is preoccupied with only the glory of God. Why- Everything is all about God. Glory is the sum of all God-s attributes. Edward Lee, a member of Parliament when the Westminster Confession was written, gives a classic definition of glory. God makes his attributes visible in creation -Psalm 19-, including in angels, seraphim, people and even the human body, inside and out. Calvin calls the universe -a theater of divine glory-. The God who needs nothing comes to give us salvation- We can share some of his love or wisdom. When Moses wanted to see God-s glory -Exodus 33-, what he experienced is what he heard, his word. We are intellectually lazy. Without scripture we are impoverished, we are at risk of attacks from evil, and we are rootless in crisis. Jesus- final report to his Father- The law says, -Do this, and live-- Jesus says, -I did this, and they live-- Other verses- Isaiah 48-11, Isaiah 6-3, Psalm 50-10-15, Isaiah 55-8, John 13-3-11.

Overview: LORD-S EVALUATION--Dean Jonathan Swift of -Gulliver-s Travels- fame said of society ladies, -They were so busy being religious, they had no time to say their prayers.- Isaiah was sent to shout at the people of God, not to the -paganized Christians- of Isaiah 56-10. These people loves God but treated him as a static given, a trophy wife. God closes his ear to the super-spirituality of their fasting. They did their religion to get something from God-satisfaction, significance, sense of his love-or to have leverage with him.--LORD-S CHALLENGE--They act as if- God were a static given, rather than a dynamic reality. Too many Christian lives lack vibrancy, emotion and engagement with God as a real person. These chose to fast, resulting in a bad temper and quarreling. Others suffered the collateral damage. Fasting required by God only once a year- They multiplied fasts to show off their spirituality. They put guilt trips and burdens on others. No- Do what God has told you to do, what you know is his will, like keeping the Sabbath. It-s in the Ten Commandments- It his special day, not a fast day, but a feast day. Use it to pursue him, engage with him, seek him with all your heart.--LORD-S PROMISE--There-s long list of things after a series of -Then-, the things God promises you. If you don-t feel his love, you will THEN. You will have a heart and life that go down deep, that are established. THEN so many of the things you ask for, you won-t have to ask for at all- they will just be there from a loving Father.----Other verses- Matthew 6-16-18, Matthew 12-8, Luke 6-5, James 1-2
