But he is not indifferent, even when silent.--IS IT TOO LATE FOR SUCH A CHURCH- For the faithful, he makes a sure promise Revelation 2-3 Isaiah saw this God, the Servant. Isaiah 6-1-7, Isaiah 52-13 His name reflects moral Majesty. But he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land- Isaiah 57-13--Finally, God warns the wicked-no peace for you. Overview: INTRODUCTION- Many are afraid of hoping, that they might fall into the clutches of despair. Nietzsche--Hope is the most evil of all evils- Literary despair and technological optimism. We have better houses, but not better homes.--CONSOLATION OF ISRAEL- Refers to a new salvation and restoration- a new and greater Exodus under God-s Messiah and a final atonement. Then God will redeem Israel as the church of the new covenant, God-s people, the covenant household- a kingdom of justice, peace and holiness. Jesus, Moses and Elijah spoke about his -exodus- which is the Greek word also used for departure or death. The second Exodus begins. Luke then recounts the Passion. These two summarized the OT life and religion.--SIMEON-S FAITH AND HOPE, GOD-S FAITHFULNESS- The prophesy to him fell in a period of prophetic silence for hundreds of years. It was a low point in Israel-s history. Luke 2-22. Jesus brought to be consecrated to the service of the Lord. He holds the Child many godly people had longed for. His words of faith are now sung in liturgies around the world every day. He testifies to God-s faithful word. He holds God-s salvation, all that we need in Christ. Yet this child would be mocked and despised, his name used as a cuss word.--PRESENT AND FUTURE HOPE IN CHRIST- Our hope looks to our horizon, -He shall come again-- Our hope spans the grave. We are pilgrims to a heavenly city, but not alone. Overview: People are fascinated with the private lives of important people. Here we listen to God talking to God in the inner sanctuary. John Knox had his wife read this on his deathbed- he slipped away as she read. Martyn Lloyd-Jones says this chapter gives us the help we need. The Apostle Peter says the same thing--that we have help for -all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him -2 Peter 1-3-5-. Overview: Since the Enlightenment, the two tiers of experience are separated by the world. The visible is real, factual. The invisible is a matter of personal preference and is relative, like religion. Not so in Jesus- day. Both are real. Most importantly the Holy Spirit is real, and he recreates in our heart the great values we must grasp for Christian living.----LOVE - The high, distant God comes near to love us.-- -Why do you speak to them in parables-- -To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.- Matthew 13-10-17 v. 10-11---For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. Overview: The sermon was introduced using the short story -Babette-s Feast- by Isak Dinesen as a picture of the type of a free and satisfying feast- -The kingdom of God is often likened to a party, a banquet- Matthew 22-8-9 -This rich imagery of a table, a feast, a banquet is put before the church whenever we sit around the Lord-s Table. -I want you to notice who is invited here. Individuals- Isaiah 55-1-2 -He meets the needs that nothing else available on the market can meet.- -He comes to satisfy you in your innermost, deepest being. And what are we to do- A three-fold call-----1. The call is free- That is not to say that what is on offer has been cheap or second rate. No, it is costly. You can enjoy the whole evening. For you are not paying the tab at the end of the night.-----2. The call is guaranteed- -Here-s God-s guarantee.-and I will make with you an everlasting covenant- . Psalm 89 He describes three roles for Jesus- a- as a witness John 18-37, Revelation 1-5 b- firstborn of the dead and the ruler of kings on earth. Psalm 89----3. The call is urgent- -In verse 6 there is a reissuing of the invitation. -Don-t delay because you think you have no problem. God thinks you have a problem, even if you don-t.-----The promise of the consequences - joy and peace. The ultimate result of salvation for individuals is that the curse is lifted. Isaiah 55 -The gospel invitation does not talk about diminishing you one little bit. It is not about taking something from you, but of giving an incredible amount to you. It gives you life in its fullness. Joy in abundance. That-s the gospel invitation.- Also based on- 2 Samuel 7-12-16, Luke 1-30-33, Luke 14-22-24.

Overview: The entire book of Isaiah pivoted away from doom and gloom at Isaiah 40-1-2. Get ready for life and growth. Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD-s hand double for all her sins. Isaiah 40-1-2. The promised end of warfare and peace would come. But not until Isaiah 53, do we know how that would happen. The result of the Good News proclaimed in chap. 53, calls for uncontrolled joy in chap. 54. There are three major transitions---1- From barrenness to fruitfulness. Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear- break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor- For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.- Galatians 4-24-27.--2- Alienation to reconciliation. The Redeemer under Mosaic Law had to be a kinsman. Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he -Christ- himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, Hebrews 2-14--3- Insecurity to Security based on spiritual reformation. -and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.- Genesis 22-18.
