Listen Later

[00:07]
Hello, everyone. How are you doing?
If you live in Japan, you might often hear the word "taihen". It has various meanings and uses.
[00:20]
Example 1
"Oh, no! I over slept. I will be late!"
[00:26]
Example 2
"There was a strike, right?"
"Yes, there were no trains nor buses, so it was hell."
[00:35]
Example 3
"How is your new part time job?" "Really tough! I want to quit."
Today, we will practice "taihen".
Repeat after me
[00:47]
1. Oh, no! Heavens! (Oops!)
2. It's tough/hard. It's no fun. That's a challenge. That's serious.
3. It was tough/hard.
4. It's tough/hard, isn't it?
5. It was tough/hard, wasn't it?
6. It looks tough/hard/terrible.
7. It's very difficult.
8. It's very important.
9. It's very regrettable/pity/dissapointing.
10. It's very useful (be of immense help).
11. It was a rough/tough year.
12. It was a lot of pressure. (I was under a great deal of pressure.)
[0:36]
Then, please say it with "taihen!"
For example,
I forgot my smartphone!
→ Oh no, I forgot my smartphone!
Ready?
[02:49]
1. I overslept!
→ Oh no, I overslept!
2. I have an exam tomorrow!

4. I didn't save the file!
→ Oops, I didn't save the file!
5. I made a mistake with the number of copies!
→ Oh dear, I did wrong number of copies!
6. I overcooked the pasta!

[04:04]
Now, please response with either "taihen desune" or "taihen deshitane".
[04:13]
1. I can't finish my work.
→ That's bad.
2. I have series of meetings this week.
→ That must be tough.
3. Shinkansen stopped midway due to a typhoon.
→ That's arduous. (Sorry to hear that.)
