167: How to Laser Coach and Effectively Close a Coaching Conversation: Jim Smith, PCC

Listen Later

We all can use a little more happiness and positivity, right?I have just the right person to help you put more happiness into your coaching practice, along with practical tips to help you be a more effective coach. I hope today’s show will help with your forward momentum and increase your positive perspective.

Jim Smith is The Executive Happiness Coach. He’s a global executive coach, speaker, author, and change strategist. Jim works with leaders all over the world to better balance their lives, to improve their leadership skills, and to build more positive workplace cultures. Jim has spent many years in the corporate world, holding executive roles in sales, marketing, finance, operations, and human resources, and he brings all of that experience into his executive coaching practice. Jim has written four books about happiness and leadership, one of which is Happiness at the Speed of Life: 13 Powerful Strategies for Finding Happiness in a Turbulent World at Home and on the Job. As much as I want to explore the subject of happiness with Jim, today’s show focuses on something that challenges most coaches, and that is how to effectively hold the structure of a session, close a session, and use the elements of laser coaching. Jim is passionate about what he does, and you’ll be able to hear that in our conversation.

Show Highlights:

●    What brought Jim’s attention to the topic of holding the framework of a coaching conversation

●    Why you need to have a framework for coaching conversations

●    Jim’s Diamond model of divergent and convergent thinking

●    What partnering looks like in convergent thinking

●    Why you have to trust the process

●    Things that might get in the way of closing the coaching conversation

●    Considerations in being lasered and focused in our coaching

●    How Jim decided to offer three clients lasered coaching for a year---and why he’ll do it again

●    Helpful feedback on Jim’s unconventional lasered coaching model

●    Why you have to trust that the client is getting what they need
