On March 23, 2023, the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew was asked to appear before the US congress and answer questions regarding TikTok’s invasive features, possible ties to the Chinese government, and extremely negative effects the app is having on people’s mental health.
According to the members of congress, this meeting would have been Mr. Chew’s opportunity to prove that TikTok can be trusted by the American people and that it shouldn’t be banned in the US. However, the congressional hearing ended up being a brutal 5 hours of what some people would call foolish questioning that left many of us thinking that TikTok will in fact be banned in the United States simply because the people who would enact this ban are afraid of something they clearly don’t understand.
