  • Another new year, another new manager - Aitor Karanka leaves #nffc: Forest Ramble Podcast, January 2019

In January’s Forest Ramble Podcast, we reel from the news of Aitor Karanka’s departure and look at the effect it had on the team (not a good one, if the last few weeks’ results have been anything to go by). Rich Ferraro, Steven Toplis, the Maradona Of The Midlands and Baz review recent results, digest defensive deficiencies and contemplate the club’s contingency plans.
At the time of recording, Forest had just had a nightmare at the Madejski Stadium, but noises from the club suggested Jokanovic, O’ Neill and Jardim as possible replacements as Evangelos Marinakis and the club’s hierarchy remain positive of promotion progress (although we might need some defensive reinforcements in the meantime).

Let’s be honest, the result wasn’t much of a surprise, but Steven Toplis found much to be encouraged about from the Reds’ trip to Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
With speculation about the manager seemingly on the backburner (although now firing again, at the time of writing), Forest took their makeshift defence to Chelsea, who put out a strong team, exemplified by a misfiring £60m striker getting two goals, a World Cup winning Spaniard seeing his penalty saved, and Eden Hazard coming on as a substitute. Although the Premier League team’s power and guile proved too much for Forest, there was some pride in the Reds’ resilience.

  • Notttingham Forest 4-2 Leeds United: mini match report
A 4-2 victory over Leeds United just after Christmas, Forest one place outside the play-offs in a season that hasn’t been smooth but has shown promise - surely not another managerial departure?
Rich Ferraro and Baz review an entertaining encounter at the City Ground, where the players seemingly responded to the situation surrounding Aitor Karanka, and apparently put paid to the rumours that the Spaniard had lost the dressing room.
There were too many talking points to cover, but we talk about goals, red cards and the sense of occasion, not to mention the reaction of Karanka himself. We have good words for Colback and Murphy, wax lyrical about Benny Osborn’s goal and don’t even have time to discuss Yacob at centre-back and whether Robinson should have been sent off (no - the double jeopardy rule meant that the Forest man gets a reprieve but would have seen red last year).

  • Home discomforts and squad strengthening: Forest Ramble Podcast, December 2018
In December’s Forest Ramble Podcast, we assume the roles of Jimmy Stewart in It’s A Wonderful Life, Eddie Murphy in Trading Places, Will Ferrell in Elf, Bruce Willis in Die Hard and Macauiay Culkin in Home Alone.
This month Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis, the Maradona Of The Midlands and Baz, to look back at a tricky set of fixtures for the Reds. There were two frustrating home defeats to Preston North End and Queen’s Park Rangers, but also encouraging away displays (for entirely different reasons) at Aston Villa and Derby County. We review the defensive difficulties of losing three of your centre-halves, and the knock-on effect at full-back, discuss the importance of the holding midfield roles, and whether Aitor Karanka’s tactical shuffles have been (and can be) effective.
As ever, we have the Forest Ramble Sketch, in which Jeremy Davies takes a nostalgic look back at some of the memorable Forest fixtures over the years, to give you something to look up rather than endless repeats over the festive period.

  • Nottingham Forest 0-1 QPR: mini match report
Rich Ferraro and Baz review a disappointing afternoon at the City Ground, where the players seemed a bit flat, incurring the wrath of Aitor Karanka. We discuss the visitors’ tactics, the contribution of the referee (did he actually affect the outcome of the game) and the weaknesses in a performance where no Forest player stood out, despite Karanka’s change of formation and tactics via an unexpected double substitution.

  • Derby County 0-0 Nottingham Forest: mini match report
Steven Toplis shares his thoughts following Monday night’s hard-fought encounter with our woolly friends from down the road. Steven discusses whether or not Forest should have won, purely on the basis of chances created, and of course cannot ignore Frank Lampard’s grumbles about the Darikwa-Lawrence “penalty” incident, nor the potential red cards for Derby’s defenders. It is not all negative, as there is praise for Forest’s midfield axis of Colback and Yacob.

  • Nottingham Forest 0-0 Stoke City: mini match report
Steven Toplis shares his thoughts following Saturday’s stalemate against Stoke. Although there were no goals, Steven finds much to whet the appetite against a team with a Premier League back four and an international goalkeeper. He also has good words to say about the Forest defence, which kept another clean sheet and saw the best performance yet from Zimbabwe’s finest, Tendayi Darikwa.
