  • Guest Show: The Wraith (3 of 3)

Consumed by darkness, Amanda sets out to violently punish all who do business with her father. But while shutting down an underground casino, The Wraith is finally confronted by The Protector and The Avenger.

    Narrator - Emmanuel Mendes-Chumaceiro
    Amanda Monroe - Shannon McDermott
    Arthur - Joseph Callari
    The Protector - Tom Proprofsky
    The Avenger - Heath Harper
    F.P. Monroe - Chris Bostrom
    Casino Owner - Josh Rothman

    A WORD FROM CHRIS

There was only one way this story was ever going to end. I had already alluded to it in THE PROTECTOR VS THE RED STAR, and it finally played out here. The Protector has a crappy disguise, and now it finally cost him. Being a superhero has consequences, and while not always life or death, I think it's very important to explore them. Amanda cannot just go to jail for her crimes, if anything, that would only twist her more into a Punisher knock off. And nobody wants that.

But essentially having the Protector threaten her to behave, in exchange for keeping his secret, definitely makes for an interesting perspective. It also gives Amanda the chance to not only return, but to possibly redeem herself in the eyes of both Allen and Robert. Will we see more of the Wraith in the future? Who can say, really? But I prefer to leave things open with these types of characters, rather than painting myself into a corner with their fate.

    A WORD FROM CHRIS

So with this radio play, I wanted to keep that classic serial vibe, which is why it's broken down into three parts, rather than one long play. That, and I don't feel people really want to sit and listen to a radio play for 30 minutes straight. I mean, some of you probably do, but overall, most people don't have patience.

In part one, we got to see inside the mind of Amanda and the lengths she was willing to go to "save" her father. In part two, we get to see the toll it begins to take. How this once innocent, carefree woman has now become bitter and jaded. Amanda is a scary person when you stop and think about it. She's more or less a sociopath. She doesn't care who she hurts, so long as she has already judged them, and she will turn her back on anyone who tries to stop her.

Another angle I wanted to continue to explore in this series, was the developing working relationship between Allen and Robert, both as heroes and civilians. These two have come to truly respect each other and are growing closer as friends and vigilantes. They openly communicate and share their resources with one another, unlike some of the more famous heroes out there, because ya, that's how heroes are supposed to act.

While this episode is shorter than the others, it still carries a lot of emotional weight, specifically for Amanda's strained relationship with her father and with Arthur. Here, we get to see the toll her actions have taken.

    A WORD FROM CHRIS

The Wraith, like many of my BCU heroes started at out as a male character that I created in grade school. I was obsessed with the Batman Animated Series and loved the noir style of that show. Naturally, I created a character to embody that. Originally named the Darkness, the character was more of a legacy hero. A masked vigilante who looked like a cross between the Shadow and the Gray Ghost, that gets killed in the 50's, only to have his grandson discover his legacy decades later. That story element was eventually repurposed for the Avenger.

When it came time to actually building the BCU, I knew I wanted to reintroduce the Darkness, but with a fresh take. Since the time I had created him, Top Cow comics had published their own Darkness title. The character was nothing like mine, but the name was now taken and I really didn't want to bother competing with a more established character. Also, I had come to realize the Darkness was kind of a weird thing to call yourself, and would sound odd when characters were addressing each other. I decided I wanted something, short, sweet and effective. I ultimately settled on the Wraith. It was an easy choice.

As for who the Wraith was going to be- I knew I wanted the character to now be a woman, since I already had the Protector and Avenger running around Republic City. I felt having a female anti-hero rounding out the trio was the way to go, but I didn't want the character to present herself as female. I gave it some thought, and tried to get into the head of a woman in the 40's taking on the criminal underworld, and while female heroes in the 21st century can fair pretty well in striking fear into the hearts of modern men, back then, times were definitely different. Also, having an alter ego of a different gender really helps throw suspicion off oneself, and I thought that was a cool angle to include.

I had grown up with Marilyn Monroe playing a big part in my life, as my father famously illustrated her collector's plate series from the Bradford Exchange. (Your parents or grandparents probably have a few.) As a kid, I once met the owner of her estate and got to see a few of her personal items. I will admit, I have no idea who Marilyn Monroe was as a person, so I'm not about to brag about some unspoken connection or anything. She was just a significant part of my childhood as she technically helped provide a living for my family. That being said, it was a pretty easy decision to base the look and style of Amanda after her.

Having an extremely privileged young woman coming to terms that her family has profited from illegal dealings, and wanting to do something about it, is not an angle often explored in comics, let alone in such a dark manner. And when compared to my other, more straight forward heroes, I felt this helped set The Wraith apart from the rest.

The Wraith was originally supposed to make her debut in issue #3 of my unreleased Protector comic. But as I've mentioned before, we never made it past issue #1. Long story short, it was just too expensive to print. It wasn't until this past year, that I even considered reworking the comic story into a radio play. But when inspiration strikes, you gotta run with it.

I knew going into this play, I wanted someone with natural flare. Amanda is a very "extra" woman, and whoever embodied her should be the same. Spoiler alert- it was Shannon. Ever since I first met her, Shannon McDermott has exuded "extra". So casting her was an effortless task. We talked a lot about the character, and it was very validating to know someone else was so in sync with Amanda, as I was.

For this project, Shannon had actually flown in to visit, so rather than just making up some art for the thumbnail like I have with my other radio plays, we decided it would be cooler to do a full on photoshoot with her in costume. And yeah, it was damn cool seeing her as both Amanda and the Wraith.

  • Guest Show: Jack Slater V
Finally, the sequel you never knew you wanted, to a franchise that never existed- JACK SLATER V!   When a group of vaguely European terrorists overtake City Hall, it's up to Jack Slater to negotiate a peaceful surrender, and rescue Mayor Tom Cruise, and everyone else held hostage.   CAST Jack Slater - Heath Harper Kreig - Chris .R. Notarile Mayor Tom Cruise - Evan (Not Tom Cruise) Ferrante Lt. Dekker - Clinton Noble Doyle - Collin Wheeler Narrator - Trey Gabehart ( https://www.youtube.com/theenero0987 ) News Anchor - Tess Speranza Announcer - Josh Rothman Henchman 1 - Emmanuel Mendez-Chumaceiro Henchman 2 - Oscar Alonso Ambassador Olaf - Shannon McDermott Hostage - Lindsey Bean   A WORD FROM CHRIS At the time of making this, we are knee deep in the horrible Coronavirus pandemic. And because of it, I've been unable to film a single thing. I firmly believe in practicing social distancing, and the last thing I want is to selfishly summon all my actors and risk their health because I want to film. Thus, I've once again found myself thinking outside the box in an effort to indulge my creativity.   I don't exactly know what inspired me to make a radio play. All I know is that I just kinda wanted to do it. I've had friends and actors record lines remotely many times over the years. And unless I told you, you'd probably never know. So I used that same process and mindset to approach doing a radio play.   The first step was selecting a script that I knew I'd never get to film, especially at my current level. So I went through my DEAD SCRIPTS folder on my computer. It is pretty much comprised of scripts, stories and ideas that I either will never be able to make, outdated versions of scripts, or stories lost interest in doing.   After a short skim, I landed on Jack Slater V. I love Last Action Hero. It truly inspired me as a kid. I saw it in theaters, had the action figures, the car and the SNES game. I was a true fan. And around 2013 or so, I had the idea of continuing the unseen Jack Slater story. I really loved the idea of lampooning action films, ala the Simpsons' McBane, and I felt that Jack Slater is right in line with that over the top humor.   So I ended up writing a treatment for a full length Jack Slater movie. Of course, complete with insane action, endless ammunition, convenient ex machinas, and an over the top story that would make any action fan smile. But of course, it's impossible to make. The budget for a legit Jack Slater movie would be over 100m, and I don't even have the rights. So I rightfully tucked my Jack Slater idea into the DEAD SCRIPTS folder, but not before writing the cold open.   Flash forward to now, I pluck the cold open for JACK SLATER V, and retool it to be a little more descriptive for radio purposes, and here we are- audio recording of the first 10 minutes of my unwritten, unproduced Jack Slater sequel.   CHECK OUT OUR MERCH: https://www.redbubble.com/people/blin...

  • Guest Show: J.J. Flask Private Eye (part 2 of 2)
A down on his luck PI finds himself on the hunt for a crazed killer, in this noir-styled thriller.   Starring: Heath Harper - JJ Flask Dana Jesberger - Clara Henry Roe - Terrance   A WORD FROM CHRIS

After I had finished photography and editing on the first chapter, I instantly knew I wanted to make another. I was so enthralled with the black and white noir style, I couldn't get enough of it. Still can't. I wanted to keep that perpetually "down his luck" angle for Flask, and since I had already done the fem fatal trope with Queen Adelaide previously, I wanted to tackle the complicated ex troupe next, and thus, Clara was born.

One thing I wanted to keep at the center of it all, was Flask's feelings for Clara. No matter how horrible she may be, he still has a soft spot for her. He's a hopeless romantic after all.

With chapter 1 complete, it was pretty easy to write chapter 2 and just build on what was there. I felt that was a healthier direction to go in, rather than just doing a completely unrelated story. Things are always the most intriguing when they get personal for the characters.

A down on his luck PI finds himself on the hunt for a crazed killer, in this noir-styled thriller.   Starring: Heath Harper - JJ Flask Lindsey Bean - Queen Adelaide Santana Maynard - Casey Dwight Taylor - Vincent   A WORD FROM CHRIS Please forgive the audio quality. This was one of my first radio plays. JJ FLASK : PRIVATE EYE is my first foray into the classic black and white, hard boiled noir detective genre, but with a fun twist that will satisfy any gumshoe fan.   I had the idea whilst stuck in quarantine last year. I wanted to put out a new graphic novel, but I really wanted to do it in black and white, so I decided to try my hand at the noir genre. I felt that setting the book in the vampire world I created in my TURNED short was a great way to spice things up, and to my knowledge, there are no vampire detectives out there, so it seemed like the right way to go. The book is available in the link below, and I highly suggest reading it. It's very fun and helps round out this radio play accompaniment.   Read the full comic book for free with Amazon Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/JJ-FLASK-PRIVA...   CHECK OUT OUR MERCH: https://www.redbubble.com/people/blin...
