The incredibly well-received book ‘The Body Keeps the Score’ by Bessel Van Der Kolk dives into the world of trauma and methods of rehabilitation. Van der Kolk argues that conventional methods of treatment such as prescription drugs only deal with the symptoms whereas the methods he emphasises tend to do a lot more to help the underlying problem.
Being a pioneer of the field and having had over 30+ years of dealing with traumatised victims, Van der Kolk has been able to observe that the brain, mind and body all play an equal part in dealing with traumatic events. These insights have allowed him to try out new methods of treatment and determine their efficacy.
Jes and I explore a lot in this episode, touching on how trauma victims experience, struggle, cope and overcome traumatic events.
This book really is fascinating and anyone from the slightly anxious, to the unfortunate victims of trauma should definitely read it.
