Argos to close their stores, 580 workers to be let go.
Argos lena gcuid siopaí a dhúnadh, 580 oibrí le ligean chun siúil.
Retail company Argos is to close all its stores in the State at the end of June and let the 580 people who work for them go.
Tá an comhlacht miondíola Argos lena gcuid siopaí ar fad sa Stát a dhúnadh i ndeiridh an Mheithimh agus na 580 duine atá ag obair dóibh a ligean chun siúil.
In a statement, the company said that it would not be wise to invest more in their operations in the Republic of Ireland and that the money would be better invested in other parts of the business elsewhere.
I ráiteas, dúirt an comhlacht nach mbeadh sé ciallmhar tuilleadh infheistíochta a dhéanamh ina gcuid oibríochtaí i bPoblacht na hÉireann agus gurbh fhearr an t-airgead a infheistiú i gcodanna eile den ghnó in áiteanna eile.
The company promised that a very generous redundancy package would be given to the workers.
Gheall an comhlacht go dtabharfaí pacáiste iomarcaíochta thar a bheith flaithiúil do na hoibrithe.
In that case, it was said, a special redundancy payment "as a goodwill gesture" will be given to the few people who are not entitled to the normal redundancy terms.
Ina cheann sin, a dúradh, tabharfar íocaíocht speisialta iomarcaíochta "mar chomhartha dea-mhéine" don beagán daoine nach bhfuil i dteideal na ngnáth-théarmaí iomarcaíochta.
The 34 Argos stores in various parts of the State will be closed on June 24 and orders will not be accepted after March 22.
Is ar an 24 Meitheamh a dhúnfar an 34 siopa atá ag Argos in áiteanna éagsúla sa Stát agus ní ghlacfar le horduithe tar éis 22 Márta.
The Mandate union said they are disappointed by the news but would do their best to get the best redundancy deal for the workers.
Dúirt an ceardchumann Mandate go bhfuil díomá orthu faoin scéala ach go ndéanfaidís a ndícheall an margadh iomarcaíochta is fearr a fháil do na hoibrithe.
It is understood that there was a drop of 21% on the company's sales in the State last year and that they lost over €13 million.
Tuigtear go raibh titim de 21 faoin gcéad ar dhíolacháin an chomhlachta sa Stát anuraidh agus gur chaill siad os cionn €13 milliún.
