Electric scooters involved in 746 traffic accidents in 2022.
Baint ag scútair leictreacha le 746 eachtra tráchta in 2022.
Gardaí recorded 746 traffic incidents involving electric scooters last year, an average of fourteen incidents per week and an increase of almost 17% from the previous year.
Thaifead na Gardaí 746 eachtra tráchta a raibh baint ag scútair leictreacha leo anuraidh, sin ceithre eachtra dhéag in aghaidh na seachtaine ar an meán agus ardú beagnach 17 faoin gcéad ón mbliain roimhe sin.
The figures provided by the Gardaí today also show that they have recorded 28 traffic incidents involving electric scooters since the beginning of this year.
Léiríonn na figiúirí a chuir na Gardaí ar fáil inniu freisin go bhfuil 28 eachtra tráchta a raibh baint ag scútair leictreacha leo taifeadta acu ó thús na bliana seo.
Gardaí also say they have confiscated 305 electric scooters under the Road Traffic Act since 2020.
Deir na Gardaí chomh maith gur choigistigh siad 305 scútar leictreach faoin Acht um Thrácht ar Bhóithre ón mbliain 2020.
Currently, it is against the law to use electric scooters on roads and footpaths in this country, but legislation is due to be passed in the Oireachtas shortly to make it legal.
Faoi láthair, tá sé in aghaidh an dlí feidhm a bhaint as scútair leictreacha ar bhóithre agus ar chosáin sa tír seo, ach tá reachtaíocht le rith san Oireachtas go gairid lena ndéanamh dleathach.
According to the law, because an electric scooter is a mechanically propelled vehicle, it is not allowed to use it in a public place without motor tax and insurance and without the person using it having a driver's license.
De réir an dlí, mar gheall gur feithicil mheicnighluaiste é scútar leictreach, níl cead feidhm a bhaint as in áit phoiblí gan mótarcháin agus árachas a bheith air ná gan ceadúnas tiomána a bheith ag an té atá á úsáid.
However, this is a real dilemma, as electric scooters cannot be taxed according to the same law.
Is sáinn cheart é seo, áfach, mar nach féidir mótarcháin a chur scútar leictreach de réir an dlí chéanna.
It is understood that the new regulations to be introduced mean that people under the age of sixteen will not be allowed to use them; that they will not be allowed to be used on footpaths; that they will not be allowed to carry passengers or luggage; and that a speed limit will be set for them.
Tuigtear go bhfuil sé i gceist faoi na rialacháin nua atá le tabhairt isteach nach mbeidh cead ag daoine faoi shé bliana déag iad a úsáid; nach mbeidh cead iad a úsáid ar chosáin; nach mbeidh cead paisinéirí ná bagáiste a iompar orthu; agus go leagfar síos teorainn luais dóibh.
