Google to let 240 workers in Ireland go.
Google le 240 oibrí in Éirinn a ligean chun siúil.
The technology giant Google has announced that they are to let 240 workers in Ireland go.
Tá sé fógartha ag an ollchomhlacht teicneolaíochta Google go bhfuil siad le 240 oibrí in Éirinn a ligean chun siúil.
That's about 4.4% of the 5,500 people employed by Google in this country.
Sin thart ar 4.4 faoin gcéad de na 5,500 duine atá fostaithe ag Google sa tír seo.
Staff were informed of the situation in an email today, and were told that a "joint consultation process" would begin tomorrow.
Cuireadh an scéal in iúl i ríomhphost don fhoireann inniu, agus dúradh leo go gcuirfí tús amárach le "comharphróiseas comhairliúcháin".
It was revealed that the workers would be let go from the sales, technology and engineering, and support departments.
Tugadh le fios gur ó na rannóga díolacháin, teicneolaíochta agus innealtóireachta, agus tacaíochta a ligfí na oibrithe chun siúil.
Last month, Alphabet – Google's parent company – announced that they were "cancelling" 12,000 jobs in different parts of the world.
An mhí seo caite, d'fhógair Alphabet – máthairchomhlacht Google – go raibh siad 12,000 post in áiteanna éagsúla ar fud an domhain "a chur ar ceal".
At the time, Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Alphabet, said that he was optimistic about the future of the company thanks to the investment they made in Artificial Intelligence at the very beginning of its development, among other things.
Ag an am, dúirt Sundar Pichai, príomhfheidhmeannach Alphabet, go raibh sé dóchasach faoina raibh i ndán don chomhlacht a bhuíochas sin don infheistíocht a rinne siad in Intleacht Shaorga i bhfíorthús a forbartha, i measc rudaí eile.
However, the tech sector in the United States is in recession and the biggest companies in the sector have been letting go for several months - such as Twitter, Meta, Stripe, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, PayPal and HubSpot who have centers all in Ireland.
Mar sin féin, tá an earnáil teicneolaíochta sna Stáit Aontaithe ag cúlú agus tá oibrithe á ligean chun siúil ag na comhlachtaí is mó san earnáil le roinnt míonna – leithéidí Twitter, Meta, Stripe, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, PayPal agus HubSpot a bhfuil ionaid acu ar fad in Éirinn.
Despite this, the Government says that the technology sector in this country remains a strong base.
Ina ainneoin sin, deir an Rialtas go bhfuil bonn láidir faoin earnáil teicneolaíochta sa tír seo i gcónaí.
