Health notice issued about the spread of norovirus.
Fógra sláinte eisithe faoi leathadh an noraivíris.
The Health Service Executive is advising people to be aware of the norovirus – the winter vomiting bug, as it is also known – of which there are currently a high number of cases.
Tá Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte ag comhairliú do dhaoine a bheith san airdeall ar an noraivíreas – an fríd urlacain geimhridh, mar a thugtar air freisin – a bhfuil líon ard cásanna de ann i láthair na huaire.
The Executive says there are currently four times as many cases as there were this time last year.
Deir an Fheidhmeannacht go bhfuil ceithre oiread na gcásanna ann faoi láthair agus a bhí an t-am seo anuraidh.
Vomiting and diarrhea are the main symptoms of the virus which spreads easily.
Urlacan agus buinneach is ea príomhshiomptóim an víris a scaipeann go héasca.
People also have fever, headache and stomach aches, and sometimes have pains in other parts of the body.
Bíonn fiabhras, tinneas cinn agus daigh bhoilg ar dhaoine freisin, agus bíonn pianta i mbaill eile den chorp in amanna.
In a statement issued this morning, the Health Protection Watch Center said that 394 cases of norovirus were officially recorded in the first ten weeks of this year, compared to 109 in the same period last year.
I ráiteas a eisíodh ar maidin inniu, dúirt an Lárionad Faire um Chosaint Sláinte gur taifeadadh go hoifigiúil 394 cás den noraivíreas sna chéad deich seachtaine den bhliain seo, le hais 109 san achar céanna anuraidh.
Young children and old people are the most affected by the virus, it was said.
Is leanaí óga agus seandaoine is mó atá buailte tinn ag an víreas, a dúradh.
Of the 394 cases recorded, half of them are people over 65 years of age and a quarter are children under five.
As na 394 cás a taifeadadh, is daoine os cionn 65 bliain a leath acu agus is leanaí faoi bhun cúig bliana corradh leis an gceathrú cuid.
People are being asked to wash their hands and wipe surfaces frequently to prevent the spread of the virus.
Táthar ag iarraidh ar dhaoine a lámha a ní agus dromhchlaí a sciomradh go minic chun cur in aghaidh leathadh an víris.
Dr Paul McKeown from the Watch Center said it was important to take into account that the norovirus lives on surfaces for a long time.
Dúirt an Dr Paul McKeown ón Lárionad Faire nár mhór a chur san áireamh go maireann an noraivíreas ar dhromchlaí ar feadh i bhfad.
He also pointed out that soap and water are the best protection against the virus but that alcohol gel is nowhere near as good.
Thug sé le fios freisin gur gallúnach agus uisce an chosaint is fearr ar an víreas ach nach bhfuil aon ghar i nglóthach alcóil.
He said that there have not been as many cases of norovirus recorded for several years due to the pandemic but that it is now among us again without any delay.
Dúirt sé nár taifeadadh an oiread cásanna den noraivíreas le roinnt blianta mar gheall ar an bpaindéim ach go bhfuil sé inár measc anois arís gan aon agó.
