Plan to evacuate 80 Ukrainians from Sydney city suspended.

A plan to evacuate around 80 refugees from the Ukraine from a former camp in Catherbin, Co Kerry, was suspended today after local residents opposed it.

Cuireadh ar fionraí inniu plean atá ann thart ar 80 dídeanaí ón Úcráin a aslonnú ó iaróstán i gCathair Saidhbhín, Co Chiarraí, tar éis do mhuintir na háite cur ina aghaidh.

It was intended to transfer 40 of the Ukrainians to Tralee, the other 40 to be transferred to other places in Sydney and asylum seekers from other countries would be placed in the former station in their place.

About 200 Ukrainians are living in the former station which is now called the Skelge Accommodation Centre.

When the 80 were told last Friday that they were to be evacuated, local representatives, business people and people from the community came together to oppose the plan.
