A windfall tax has been proposed on supermarket profits.
Moladh cáin amhantair a ghearradh ar bhrabúis ollmhargaí.
A windfall tax should be imposed on supermarkets if they are making a profit, just as is done in the case of energy companies, according to Labor Party finance spokesman Ged Nash.
Ba chóir cáin amhantair a ghearradh ar ollmhargaí má tá siad i mbun brabúsaíochta, díreach mar a dhéantar i gcás comhlachtaí fuinnimh, dar le hurlabhraí airgeadais Pháirtí an Lucht Oibre an Teachta Dála Ged Nash.
He said that there is no ghar in the 'utilisation' that the Government is currently undertaking in relation to this issue.
Dúirt sé nach bhfuil aon ghar san 'útamáil' atá ar bun ag an Rialtas faoi láthair i dtaobh na ceiste seo.
Speaking on RTÉ, Ged Nash claimed that there are people in Ireland who do not have enough to eat.
Ag labhairt dó ar RTÉ, mhaígh Ged Nash go bhfuil daoine in Éirinn nach bhfuil a ndóthain le n-ithe acu.
After Ireland is a rich country, he said, there are 677,000 people on the opposite side of the poverty threshold.
Tar éis gur tír shaibhir í Éire, arsa sé, áirítear 677,000 duine a bheith ar an taobh contráilte de thairseach na bochtaineachta.
Ged Nash said that although a food regulator is to be appointed soon it is not clear how the profitability of supermarkets will be tackled.
Dúirt Ged Nash cé go bhfuil rialálaí bia le ceapadh go luath níl sé soiléir cén chaoi a rachfar i ngleic le brabúsaíocht ollmhargaí.
He suggested forcing supermarkets to publish their profits instead of taking their word for it.
Mhol sé iallach a chur ar ollmhargaí a gcuid brabús a fhoilsiú in áit a bhfocal a chreidiúint.
Several supermarkets announced yesterday that they were to lower the prices of bread and milk they sell under their own label.
D'fhógair roinnt ollmhargaí inné go raibh siad le praghsanna aráin agus bainne a dhíolann siad lena lipéad féin, go raibh siad lena n-ísliú.
Ged Nash, however, claimed that this story was just a publicity stunt, to flatter the Government.
Mhaígh Ged Nash, ámh, nach raibh sa scéal seo ach beart poiblíochta, féirín leis an Rialtas a thláthú.
The head of the farmers' representative association, the United Farmers of Ireland, said it was necessary to ensure that the new food regulator had sufficient powers.
Dúirt ceannaire chumann ionadaíochta na bhfeirmeoirí, Feirmeoirí Aontaithe na hÉireann, go gcaithfí a chinntiú go mbeadh dóthain cumhachtaí ag an rialálaí nua bia.
Tim Cullinan is concerned that the food market is being completely distorted and that the producers - that is, the farmers - are the ones who will suffer.
Tá imní ar Tim Cullinan go bhfuil an margadh bia á chur as a riocht ar fad agus gurb iad na táirgeoirí – mar atá, na feirmeoirí – gurb iad a bheas thíos leis.
According to him, the fresh vegetables that people eat in this country could be brought in from abroad in the future if the issue is not tackled properly.
Dar leis go bhféadadh sé go mbeadh na glasraí úra a itheann daoine sa tír seo á dtabhairt isteach ón iasacht feasta mura rachfaí i ngleic leis an gceist mar ba cheart.
