Health warning and calorie counts on drink labels in 2026.
Rabhadh sláinte agus líon calraí ar lipéid óil i 2026.
There is now a legal basis under new regulations approved by the Minister of Health under which a drink product must have a label indicating the number of calories and alcohol in it according to the gram of weight.
Tá bunús dlí anois faoi rialacháin nua atá ceadaithe ag an Aire Sláinte faoina gcaithfidh lipéad a bheith ar tháirge óil ag léiriú an lear calraí agus alcóil ann de réir an ghraim meáchain.
Under its regulations there will also be a warning on each label about the danger associated with drinking for a woman expecting a child, and for everyone in terms of the risk of cancer and liver disease.
Faoina rialacháin beidh rabhadh ar gach lipéad freisin faoin gcontúirt a bhaineann leis an ólachán do bhean ag súil le páiste, agus do chách ó thaobh baol ailse agus galar ae.
Minister Stephen Donnelly says that the public will now have a better understanding of the dangers of drinking due to labelling.
Deir an tAire Stephen Donnelly gur fearr an tuiscint a bheidh ag an bpobal feasta ar an gcontúirt a bhaineann leis an ól de bharr an lipéadú.
The Health Minister says that there are already health notices on food products and that the regulations on alcoholic beverages will now be in line with that.
Deir an tAire Sláinte go bhfuil fógraí sláinte cheana féin ar tháirgí bia agus go mbeidh na rialacháin faoin deoch meisciúil anois ar aon dul leis sin.
"I welcome that we were the first country in the world to put comprehensive health labeling on drinking products" said the Minister "and I hope that other countries will follow this pioneering step."
"Cuirim fáilte roimhe gurbh muid an chéad tír ar domhan le lipéadú cuimsitheach sláinte a chur ar tháirgí óil" a dúirt an tAire "agus tá súil agam go leanfaidh tíortha eile an chéim cheannródaíoch seo."
But he confirmed that the new law will not come into effect for the next 3 years, the month of May 2026, to give business people a chance to prepare for it.
Ach dheimhnigh sé nach dtiocfaidh an dlí nua i bhfeidhm go ceann 3 bliana, mí na Bealtaine 2026, le deis a thabhairt do lucht gnó ullmhú chuige.
Alcohol Action Ireland has welcomed the regulations and the organization says that drinking is estimated to be the cause of 7% of breast cancer cases in women in the country.
Tá fáilte curtha ag Alcohol Action Ireland roimh na rialacháin agus deir an eagraíocht go meastar gurbh é an t-ól is cúis le 7 faoin gcéad de na cásanna ailse brollaigh ar mhná na tíre.
