For the first time ever, the state spent over €1bn in 2024 on providing accommodation for applicants for international protection.

New figures, provided by the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Norma Foley, show that on average, the state spends €2.75m per day on accommodation for people applying for international protection.

The largest proportion of international protection applicants currently staying in state-provided accommodation are of Nigerian origin, according to the latest figures provided by IPAS, the agency responsible for providing accommodation for asylum seekers.
