    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

3 raw minutes podcast today around the streets of Cagliari, and not because I forgot to do my 3 raw minutes, but because then last night until 10:30 at night assembling the loft bed from IKEA and then this morning I left early to go and do some interviewing because here in Cagliari there is a very interesting event a kind of international contemporary dance exchange with a lot of companies, from all over the world and with panels of experts and I am there doing some interview work, very nice by the way, and now it's time to go home because, folks, yes I have to do my 3 raw minutes too that I can't forget.
So yes, I am taking you around a little piece of the streets of Cagliari. I'm walking through Garibaldi Square now, which is a square where people come in the evening to take the cooler, there are benches with old Cagliari people, old in every sense of the word, both from the point of view of age and from the point of view of the people who live in Cagliari. In fact, there are few tourists here. Um, it's a place full of trees, I don't know if they are centuries old, however they are very very very old. In fact some time ago, because the roots of the trees had kind of broken up the whole surface of the square, they dismantled everything, left the trees and then did this beautiful project where instead of stones, instead of pavement they put a kind of parking lot that apparently allows the soil to breathe and the plants to move more or less freely.
And that of tree roots, a bit of a problem, especially in all the avenues where the famous maritime pines have been planted, which have the characteristic of breaking the asphalt and creating not inconsiderable cracks.
Now I'm, I've crossed the square and I'm going, I'm walking down one of the downtown streets. I heard the sound of cars, but I could have taken the bus. But in the evening I like to take a walk, also because I saw that it would pass after quite a while, so I guess I don't live very far away, I might as well do some physical activity I've been doing little of it since I stopped canoeing for the summer break, I mean they continued, I'm the one who stopped because between one thing and another, friends, stuff, outings, basically... Then the big heat, I didn't have a chance to do it. Okay, now as soon as I get home I will upload the 3 minutes as is. Take them as they are, always, without any kind of editing. But this time I won't be in time to do the transcriptions, the translations, the things I usually do. I always love you, though.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

The problem with artificial intelligence is number one that it is artificial, and then that it is based on the intelligence that is present outside, of us humans, who are often not even that smart.
No, the real problem with artificial intelligence is that when it uses large language models such as, Chat-GPT, it relies on the written material it finds on the net. But who does put the written material on the net? It's us, so with all our prejudices, with our strange ideas and with all the clichés and so on.
So artificial intelligence, such as Chat-GPT, uses these writings, found on the network, to train itself and to predict what word comes in a given context in a given sentence. However, this artificial intelligence that is available now within the reach of everyone, that is within the reach of all people who have computers, internet, electricity and so on, so not really to everyone everyone everyone, to us in the first world, of the rich world, have access to Chat-GPT.
This artificial intelligence, however, in order to predict what the next word will be, then to form complete sentences within the topic being discussed, can only refer to about 8000 words, If I remember correctly, anyway, not very many. So what happens ? If we ask Chat-GPT to write a novel for us, it only remembers what it wrote the 8000 words before, but can't write a novel where something happens in the first chapter that at the time of reading the first chapter seems unimportant, however, when you get to the 20th chapter, it turns out that it was a fundamental thing and it solves the whole plot of the book, so these things here can't be done.
The biggest problem, however, is that these artificial intelligence models, which do nothing more than reproduce writing patterns, are based on all the biases and all the wrong patterns that, I don't need to tell you, but exist on the Web. So if you do a Google search and ask show me a picture of a doctor, 90% chance that it will show you a white male as a doctor. Same thing if I ask show me a nurse, it will probably show you a woman dressed as a nurse. If I then specify e.g., female firefighter, it surely makes you see a woman in skimpy clothes dressed as a firefighter Halloween. So the models that, there is a way of saying 's#it-in, s#it-out' if we put garbage in, only garbage will come out.

Cosa me ne faccio di queste scatole?

    TRANSLATION

Yet another campy episode this one. My friends, and those who follow me, listeners, know that (lo and behold, the noise you just heard is that of Sputnik that was chasing Mazinga), what was I saying, yes, those who know me know that today was supposed to be the decisive day of the arrival of the bed. So I spent the whole weekend cleaning out the room, taking away the big bed that was there, which had these great big drawers underneath, full of stuff, so imagine now, where am I going to put these things? Anyway, that's another matter.

So the first news is that I looked on the Ikea website and the bed will not arrive today, but we will have to pick it up tomorrow. So I have another day to sleep on the air mattress, whatever, it can be done. Then, Actually, thinking of taking advantage of the opportunity, of the chance to do some cleaning, I went through the papers and things that I keep, things that I also need for work, for example, every time I present a lesson I prepare materials, and even if I already have the materials, I prepare them again because I update them and then maybe I keep them because I say 'Ah, I can reuse them !' Then I never reuse them, but I always create them again. So I did some cleanup from that point of view.
But there are some things that I had and continue to carry around that I don't know whether to keep or throw away.

So, starting with the iPhone boxes, I had three, four, five now I don't remember. I have all the boxes, the phones are gone, but I still have the boxes. What am I going to do with these boxes? Because they are nice, I think, here, I can use them to put something in, then when I have something to put in, it never fits, or I put it in and forget I put it there because I didn't put a label on it.

So I threw away a lot of boxes, made flat and put them in the paper bin. Then there are, what do I know, postcards taken at exhibitions that I liked, and now I realize, I've had them for 20 years, 25 years I've never looked at them again, do I keep them? Do I throw them away?

I would love to have a very big house, with lots of rooms, with lots of shelves, with lots of drawers and store all the things. That's not what I have, though. I have to make do with what I have, and I'm happy, overjoyed with what I have, it's simply a matter of learning to let go, learning to throw away, give away the things that you can use, that somebody else can use otherwise, whatever, let's keep the memories, we have them in there, You don't need to have the receipt of the thing... But really there is no need. Let us keep only what is necessary. All right, I'm going, I'm going to keep on throwing away.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

Rimando a domani. E come sempre vi terrò aggiornati. Va bene. E tutto a domani. Ciao.

    TRANSLATION

3 minutes today not rough but very rough because my computer can't be used because the room, the bedroom, with my table, my computer and then also the microphone and other things, are up in the air, we are, we just finished dismantling the bed, bed that had a headboard, above the headboard there were bookcases full of books, because on Monday the new bed should arrive, or rather, we should go to pick up the new bed that we ordered from Ikea.
And it's a particular bed because it's a high bed, a loft type bed, it's not so easy to find loft beds double size, in fact initially we had thought of having a carpenter make it for us, but then it was really too expensive, too, too, too expensive, so we opted for something simpler: to get one already made from Ikea .
It will change the room completely and give me the space underneath that can become a whole long working table, what I need .
Probably not the best day to do these big jobs, these big maneuvers, because it's hot as hell outside, today again we're going to have IDK, I think 35 degrees, although then the perceived temperature, let's say it gets well into the 40s. In fact I am undecided whether or not to take a shower, I am completely soaked in sweat, but I know that as soon as I get out of the shower I will continue to sweat. And then there is also the fact that we still haven't loaded everything onto the car because we are taking the old bed to the country. Yes. Good problem. No, it's not a problem, come on, there are other things that are much more problematic.
So 3 raw minutes today in super short version, not from the point of view of lenght, because it will always last 3 minutes. I won't have a chance to do all the doodling and things I usually do, though: transcription, translation, and publishing left and right. I mean, I'll do it later, maybe tomorrow quietly set up a little space for me to work, maybe with the laptop.
So for the time being, from this sunny flamingo city everything. I defer to tomorrow. And then I also have some great ideas about how to modify the room now that we have a clean slate, more or less. Change the layout a bit, put some color, in short, there would be fun to be had. And as always I will keep you updated. All right. IThat's it, till tomorrow. Bye.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 603 Ricetta

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Today I want to do something I have never done in my 3 raw minutes: I give you a cooking recipe. So let's start by saying that I love Mediterranean cuisine, beyond even the national borders of Italy, so I'm talking about Lebanese cuisine, and one of the dishes that I used to find at my Lebanese friends' house when we ate together was 'baba ghanoush ', sorry for the pronunciation, I don't know how to pronounce baba ghanoush, no one ever corrected me and I still say baba ghanoush.
What is baba ghanoush? The baba ghanoush is a roasted eggplant, then taken the pulp and mixed with garlic, yogurt, some salt, some sesame paste, tahini. So here it is, when I started making baba ghanoush my Lebanese friend explained to me how she used to do it: so you take a nice eggplant of those nice hard round ones, then with a fork you make a lot of holes, then you put it on the stove on a high flame, of course you need the gas stove, and slowly you turn it, you toast everything.
The first few times I did the cooking, aside from the fact that smelled like people were smoking 20,000 joints, that it smelled like marijuana because you also burn the grassy part, the stem of the eggplant, and then the cooking, I'll let you imagine because as it heated up liquid came out of the little holes, in fact the holes are made for that, to let the liquids out, to drain the pulp.
Then there was an improvement in the sense that when I was doing it I would cover the kitchen top with tinfoil so that it wouldn't get completely dirty. But still you always have to carefully turn the eggplant, you get burned and then it always gets dirty anyway.
And then nothing, the genius came: so now I have the air fryer which also has the function of an oven that heats very fast, so I put the eggplant still whole, no holes, inside the oven for 10, fifteen minutes when it's nice and soft, I take it out, I make holes with the tip of the knife and then I take the flame, the mini kitchen blowtorch, which is used to make IDK some particular cakes, gateau, I don't know, and with the blowtorch I burn the outside of the eggplant, so the kitchen stays clean, I do everything on top of a cutting board on the sink, so I don't dirty anything, then I open the eggplant with a spoon take out the pulp, put it in a strainer, crush a little bit to get all the liquid out and then I continue with yogurt, Greek yogurt, crushed garlic, a little tahini, salt. Then as you taste, add ingredients until it has the right consistency.
I just preapared it. My friend Nadia is coming for lunch with her family, visiting from Australia, and we will have a very good baba ghanoush.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 602 Valigie

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

When I started traveling in the 1980s, I used to move around using a suitcase, or at most a bag, a duffel bag. The suitcase I used had no wheels and the duffle bag was not the kind that turns into a backpack, but they had small handles, then one plus a long shoulder strap that I could put on my shoulders.
Then at some point in my life the cart appeared. This thing here that I saw in the international airports and that I bought immediately, it was a little cart that opened up, with strings, with rubber bands with hooks, I would fasten my bag, my suitcase, whatever I had, on it, so I could take it with me. It had wheels.
Then I remember that it was only much, much later, much later, that I bought my first suitcase with wheels because I was always moving around with bag backpacks. But then later on I bought these suitcases, I think it was Roncato brand with wheels, two wheels.
Now I did some research and found that although we managed to send people to the moon in the 1960s, the invention of the suitcase with two wheels dates back to 1987. In fact, one pilot thought that to move his suitcase, why not put wheels on it? 1987 you know? Unbelievable! And only in 2004 then came the suitcase with the four wheels, where each wheel turns on itself.
Now, the suitcases that I have I still have the old Roncato suitcases, they work quite well, although two wheels let's say they are difficult to carry sometimes, because, especially when the suitcase is heavy, you have to tilt and so it is true that there are wheels, but you also carry the weight with your arms.
Suitcases with four wheels are definitely easier to carry, but to carry if you're moving inside the airport, because the moment you go out on the street, especially the streets that I use, which are full of holes, but also without holes, cobblestones, various stones and so on, eh are more problematic.
Now I am waiting for the invention of a suitcase with wheels that solves these problems, always first-world problems, and that is easy to carry, does not weigh down on the arm, and yet can also overcome the somewhat rougher terrain.
Now I'm not saying the over craft, the one that doesn't touch the ground, though, I don't know, let's get busy, since we're so good at inventing all the most amazing, technological things. I mean, travel. People travel, now we are learning to travel much, much lighter. But come on, give me a nice suitcase that doesn't make me sweat when I carry it around.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 601 Sperimentazione

TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation & link to All The Best Radio below]

    TRANSLATION

When 'All the Best Radio' which is an Australian broadcast, asked me to present a workshop on experimentation in audio, the first thing I thought was: but I am not experimental! But instead, the people at 'All the Best Radio', with whom I've been working with for quite some time, said no Cristina, you are one of our most experimental podcaster, so they really forced me to think about what is perceived, what is experimentation, and this is what I talked about.
The first thing that came to my mind is that experimentation depends, because what was experimental ten years ago, is no longer experimental today. I remember the first time I saw the BBC television series Sherlock, it was the first time I saw the use of texting on mobile done in a certain way, that is, Sherlock would send a message and you would see the text superimposed on the person's image, and it was the first time I saw it and I had thought Wow, oh that's nice! How different! Here, everyone is doing it today, so it is no longer experimental .
Even certain ways of presenting, to talk about audio, even certain ways of presenting, certainly in the 1990s, when Ira Glass of 'This American Life' started doing his monologue, first act, second act, third act was very experimental, today it is not. And if you don't know 'This American Life ' or Ira Glass, it doesn't matter. Just to tell you that a way of presenting, a certain attitude, when a person does it for the first time, when no one has done it yet, it seems like an experimental thing, however later on, when everyone does it, it is no longer experimental.
So if you want to be experimental you must always keep trying to do new things.
Then another thing I noticed in reflecting on what is perceived as experimentation in what I do, is because I often, my serious productions I do in English and often, apart from the fact that I have an Italian accent when I speak English, obviously, but also I use Italian words, sometimes translated and sometimes not, and this I do more or less unconsciously, but it's also not so much unconsciously but because, let's say it's an act of protest, a political act because the vast majority of things are done in English in podcasts, however, the world is not English-speaking, it's second-language English, but not first-language, and it's important to remember that there are also other realities that speak different languages and to which one should give due importance.
In short, I wanted to share with you these thoughts on experimentation.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 600 Tardi e sudata

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]
Stanca e sudata.

    TRANSLATION
Tired and sweaty. I am recording these 3 minutes late on the balcony with a headphone found at home not here nor there, in fact you will hear a lot of sibilant, pa pa, pa, pa implosive, but I assure you there is a lot of heat. I'm sleeping badly I must have said it a lot of times. I'm sleeping badly because of the heat because we have air conditioning however first of all I don't like to use air conditioning, then the problem with air conditioning in the bedroom is that if you turn it on you naturally have to close the door to the window, only then you can't, I don't want to sleep all night with air conditioning, so what happens ? If I can finally fall asleep then I wake up and I want to turn off the air conditioning, I have to get up and open the window, because otherwise after 5 minutes, once I turn off the air conditioning, you can't breathe.
So first world problems, entitled people with air conditioning at home I know, but problems all the same.
I have a hard time falling asleep and even though I shouldn't I stay until 1:00 to 1:30 to 2:00 watching things on TV, I found a series that I like so I watch four, five episodes of 20, 30 minutes each and it's bad, it's bad because then I burn through the episodes and then I have nothing more to watch, it's bad because the later I go to bed the harder you can get up in the morning, it's bad because I'm in front of the screen, in short, it's bad for a whole host of reasons though it's so hot you should see me, I'm really thrown on the couch with a big litre glass of the kind that has a straw in it, full of ice and full of water and I suck it until it runs out, and then I go back to the kitchen from the freezer and I take the ice from the fridge and I take the water and I put mint leaves in it , lemon peel, something to give it a little flavour and I keep drinking this thing here , and the more I drink the more I sweat, and the more I drink, the more I have to go pee.
In short, this installment which should have been a celebration installment because we have arrived... drum roll to the six hundredth installment, six times 3 eighteen, 1800 minutes, divided by 60, is so easy to calculate in my mind, but don't ask me to do it right now because I'm really beyond that.
Yes, I could have made a nice installment where I celebrate this milestone, and instead I'm here crying myself to sleep and saying I can't sleep and it's too hot, because I know it's going to be cold later and I'm going to regret this heat. But in the meantime come on, it's mid-afternoon, tonight I'm meeting a friend of mine who is visiting from Australia with her family. How beautiful! Yes, I won't complain anymore, I promise.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 599 La resilienza dell'orticaria

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
In my job as a translator, one of the most difficult things is to translate into Italian those terms that are used in English in the Italian language: manager, feedback, often with very different meanings. Those who know me know that mine is a real crusade for the use of Italian words when speaking in Italian and there is an Italian word for that thing. Then when I'm speaking, sometimes I slip out to say a word in English, because in the heat of the moment the English word comes easier to me, but not because of posing, but because actually most of my working and professional life has been lived in English, but when I'm writing I really make an effort to look up Italian terms, even when it's a little bit difficult.

Take the word 'manager', everyone in Italy uses the word manager inappropriately, because in its original meaning to be a manager means to manage a group of people, here in Italy, centuries ago, I worked as a teaching manager at the university and I'm not saying I was doing a secretarial job, but close to it, I certainly didn't manage anyone, however the title was manager. In Italy there are a lot of managers, manager titles here, manager titles there (is it because they manage? IDK), however if they are not managing people you can't use the title, you shouldn't use manage.

Then there is another category of words that come to Italian, start from Italian, arrive in the English language, acquire meanings related to the U.S. context and then arrive in Italy like that, bounce back and try to carry the meaning of the context with them, however, it is not always possible. Then this kind of operation also brings a cultural problem for me, those who know me know that I always talk about the cultural hegemony that foreign words used in our language carry.

When I use in Italian a word like resilience, you see, resilience is a word that, I always say it, to pronounce it and to write it gives me hives: I am looking at my right arm, with my left I am holding the microphone, right arm, there is hives in my right arm. Resilience, used here in Italy is one thing, it makes me think of the European projects that you apply for and you don't really have, or at any rate the idea that you have, you can't present it because it doesn't meet the required criteria, then you come up with a whole thing to demonstrate how you go to the little crib village, touch and go and then who knows, emptiness, desert, after ten years nobody remembers anything. Anyway, I'll talk about it another day, for now I'll stop here.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I don't know about you, but when I am in the car in the passenger seat, especially if we are driving on a suburban road, even more so if it is at night, I see myself being forced to stay awake, with my eyes pointed toward the road to make sure nothing happens.
It is an incredibly irrational thing that has nothing to do with the driving ability of the person who is driving. Last night, for example, we were returning to Cagliari after a trip to northern Sardinia, so almost 300 km, and my husband is an experienced driver. He has done a lot of rallies both as a driver and as a navigator, now he doesn't run rallies anymore, I say fortunately, but he trains people who drive emergency vehicles, so there is no reason in the world why I should have to stay with my eyes on the road to make sure nothing happens. It is, however, something that I always do, even when my eyes close from sleep, my head bends, there is this irrational thing that wants to make it so that the moment I close my eyes boom, an accident will happen.

I don't know if it ever happens to you too, I don't know if it's just me or if it happens to you too that you can't relax on these late-night car rides. I have to say then, as far as going in the car at night, this is another big problem that I because as an astigmatic I see very poorly at night even when glasses, which do correct this vision defect, however I really have great difficulty in orienting myself looking ahead, or maybe even a bit of a psychological thing, because in general, I don't like very much to go in suburban roads at night.

Anyway last night we made this long trip, very nice because there was very little traffic, because nobody likes to drive on a Sunday night at ten o'clock, when it's dark, so the roads were completely clear, you could see every now and then a few cars that either overtook us, let us pass, or came in the opposite lane, and there was a beautiful moon that, strangely enough, when we started the trip started to get dark it was very high up and then when we practically got home it was very low. So this thing here I still don't understand because I thought the moon rose at night, but whatever, I'll look into it.
