  • 3' grezzi Ep. 587 Scaramanzie

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Capito?

    TRANSLATION

When someone asks me if I am religious, I say no, and usually, I add I am not religious but I am superstitious. In fact, this is not even too correct, because I should more rightly say: I am not religious, I believe in the propitiatory, in the sense that I have my idiosyncrasies, I have my propitiatorythings, precisely, that accompany me, keep me company and it is not that they are a religion for me, however, let's say that I pay attention to it, to what I say, to what I do.

Yes, so you will say to yourselves but how come Cristina, you are a person who usually appears quite rational, how come you are superstitious and believe these things? I looked into it. So, actually superstitions and scaramanteries, is that what they say? In fact they have their own reason to exist, in fact they work, how do they work? Of course superstition, superstition doesn't work if I say, ah here, I always play the same numbers in the lottery, because otherwise if I play different numbers then they come out. When it depends on chance, superstitious do not work. Do whatever you like, put on red, purple socks, put your hat on backwards, put on your lucky shirt: it doesn't work for winning the Football Pool, nor for guessing numbers in the lottery.

However, when it works, actually they have done studies, I am not making it up, believe me. It actually works when we have to perform, when we have to do something, when we have to make an effort, when we have to engage, say, during a sports competition or during a written, oral test of any kind.

Why do they work? Because if I am convinced that the pendant is my good luck charm, what happens? That if I put it on the table while I'm taking the test, just having it there reassures me. And you know very well that when a person is calm, when anxiety levels go down, usually performance improves, so we react more casually and in a calmer way, and at the same time if I am convinced that the pendant brings me good luck, having forgotten it at home will predispose me in such a negative way, I will become so anxious, I will become so nervous that certainly my neurons will be affected, so I will not feel comfortable, I will be nervous and automatically I will do worse in the exam.

Ergo, having the good-luck charm indirectly helps me do better on the test, and not having it indirectly forces me to believe that it is the charm and not my mind that brings good luck or bad luck. Got it?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Mazinga vuoi salutare chi ci sta ascoltando?
MIAO!

    TRANSLATION

Uncomfortable situation and conscience problems because I have Mazinga here, the big cat, who insists on being petted and gets in front of me. I'll let you hear a little how she purrs, wait, huh? [PURRR] That's the sound of Mazinga creeping between me, the keyboard, and the screen where I'm recording the raw 3 minutes.

At regular intervals she comes here and stands in front, and I never know what to do, I try to push her away, to send her away, but she doesn't want to go away, and then, after I have sent her away ten times, I've managed to get her to stay away, I get guilt. Why? Because getting a cat's attention is always something special, because don't they do it often, right Mazinga? [PURR] And when the cat devotes some time to you, it's kind of a special thing, it's a magical thing.

The problem is that Mazinga is very big, so she keeps, with her tail or paws, treading on the keys of the keyboard and sometimes it causes damage like once, I don't know how, walking on the keyboard I went back to my computer, there was the screen that was no longer horizontal but was vertical. It was problematic to find the solution to put it back to horizontal because I was doing it with the screen and my head turned and it seems like a simple thing, but it's not that simple, also because then I didn't even really know how to formulate the question to find the answer on Google. I was trying to write 'how to put the screen back straight when it's tipped over' and that was not the right way of asking.

Now as I'm talking I'm trying to move the back of Mazinga who has decided that she wants to be on top of the keyboard, but if she gets on the keyboard she stops the recording, and you, if you know me, know that these recordings don't stop, but it goes so all live, all without editing, without anything.

Mazinga do you want to say hello to those who are listening to us? [PURR] Eh no, she doesn't want to be, she doesn't want to speak into the microphone, she doesn't like the microphone she pulls back when I put it in front of her.

Yes, I live with cats to whom I devote all my love, because I am not a cat person, however, I like animals and I think the cat is the animal that best suits my personality. MEW!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 585 La lettera X

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Why use the same symbol to represent two opposite things? Eh, I wondered about that and went a little bit to look it up, as I usually do, and I found some very interesting information about this symbol that is used to represent opposite things.

I'm talking about the letter X. Yes, just the letter X, one of the least used in the words of the alphabet, in the words of the Italian language, but also the English one, though, which is a letter that has taken on a lot of meanings, but from the mists of time.

In fact if you think about how the unknown is represented in the mathematical operations of algebra, the unknown is the letter X, so X represents the unknown, in fact think about the TV series of X Files, it was the files, it was the cases where there was something unknown, something strange, something magical and you put the X on it.

But the X, if you think of your typical treasure map, the pirate map, that's how you make the mark on the place where the treasure is? Again the X, so the X means unknown but also here at this exact spot. The X is also a sign that is used in piracy, think of the pirate flag: there is a skull and underneath there are bones in the shape of a cross.

In some cultures then, X means wrong answer. I remember the first years that I was in Australia when I had to fill out a form, to pick the box, or to say this is right, I would put the X, and people pointed out, no look here X means no, it means wrong, here when you want to say yes you have to put a V, you have to put what in English is called the tick, so a V to say this is right and an X to say this is wrong, and this is something that is a problem that many foreign people encounter when they have to fill out a form here in Italy, or Italians who have to fill out forms abroad.

X also means kiss, when writing messages, X also means ten, X also means Twitter, after that nice guy Elon Musk destroyed Twitter by changing the logo, changing the name and changing everything.

X is also the surname that had been chosen by Malcolm X because, in his words, he did not want to use the surname of slavery and therefore X represented his unknown ancestors from Africa, and X is also that letter that pronounced in Sardinian makes it clear whether a person is Sardinian or not, because the surname spelled Maxia in Sardinian is pronounced 'masgia'.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I find myself once again talking about things that I know absolutely nothing about, but that I find a compelling need to talk about here, because fire season is back. And as I say this word fire season, I am hammering myself on the knees, because bushfires are not a season, they are criminal acts enacted by criminals and facilitated by the lack of surveillance on the territory and the presence of municipal and regional administrations then at all levels of government that do not care for the territory and do everything so that the territory is abandoned, left to itself.
Let's start with the criminals, the criminals, the arsonists who are these guys? They are people that you have to put in the situation not to harm anymore, and this usually happens by putting them in prison, but I always wonder: won't these criminals have a family, people they love, sons and daughters. Is it possible that the family does not realise that they have a criminal inside their home? This is the first consideration.

The second consideration is that the reason why in Sardinia, this is particularly pressing to me because in these days Sardinia is being destroyed, is continuing to be destroyed, the reason why all it takes is the spark caused by a criminal to cause some really big damage, is because the land is being abandoned to itself, because the owners of the land are not being forced to keep it clean, because municipalities don't cut down the brushwood that grows by the roadsides, because the roads are being abandoned, even the countryside, more and more of it is being abandoned because there are no more shepherds, there are no more farmers, they are gone because the small towns, the small villages don't offer any kind of service, starting with a doctor, a pediatrician, roads, train stations, do we also want to be sophisticated people? Let's add internet in the mix, let's add telephone coverage. I don't know if you've ever passed through the Burcei area, well, I passed through there on a trekking and at five in the afternoon I got a message that I had been sent at 9 in the morning because there is no coverage in that area.

Yes, then I ask for help, let's put the criminal arsonists in jail, let's guard the territory and above all let's keep the territory clean, because a clean territory is easier to manage, and even if a fire breaks out (fires don't break out, they are started by someone), you see, if there are not too many brushwood in the territory maybe it is even quicker to put out the fire.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Viva i buchi!

    TRANSLATION
Today I talk about holes. Thanks to a very interesting, hilarious philosophy article that I read this morning, I will put a later link to it in the program notes, I found myself asking a question that I had never asked myself in my life and that is: what is a hole ?
From the philosophical point of view, but also from the point of view of description, if you were to describe a hole you would have a hard time trying, because philosophers and onltologists still haven't succeeded, they are working on it. However, it is something that everyone can detect, even infants detect a hole, just as they detect objects present physically in real life.
Then there are different schools of thought on the definition of a hole, some say: a hole is an illusion because it does not exist, it is not formed by any material and can only be described by describing what it is not, that is, what surrounds it. Also because linguistically you can change the phrase "there is a hole in the paper " by saying "the paper is perforated," so you completely erase the presence of the hole.
So there are several theories that try to explain how a hole can be defined, and I have read about them and they are very interesting. Again, I had never thought about something that is part of our life, holes are everywhere, starting from the eyelet loops to the holes where we plug in the sockets when we plug in our computer.
So, some say that holes are described, qualified portions of spacetime, so the world is full, the Universe is full of spacetime, only when there is the hole we are taking a section of this spacetime and defining it.
Other theories speak of a hole as the negative matter of its host material.
There are characteristics, however, that holes share. First of all, holes, brace yourself, are always parasites because they do not exist in isolation; they always need a host matter.
Then holes are always fillable and they don't necessarily disappear unless you fill them with the same material they are formed of, so a sand hole, if I put sand in it, the hole disappears, but a hole in a piece of wood, if I put paper in it, the hole continues to exist, and then a hole always coexists with the material that forms it, in fact it's not that if I fill a hole, the hole moves to make room for the material I'm filling it with, in short, it's a long talk, I'll put the link, read it because it's really so fascinating. Long live the holes!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 582 La lebbra! L'armadillo!
C'entra, c'entra!

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

No?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

No, questa è qua continua.

    TRANSLATION

If I were a dictator I would ban the use of cell phones and cameras during theater performances.
First of all because in any case the photos that people take from the chairs where they are sitting to watch the show are horrible anyway, because best case scenario, you film the scene and the heads of the people in front of you, but then above all because it is an act of vandalism towards the people who go to the theater to see the show.

This makes me very angry because I have the impression that even the shame of taking out the cell phone has been somewhat lost, and not just taking pictures without even having the foresight to remove the 'click - click' , you know, you can set the phone so that the keys don't make any noise, but also really brazenly, holding the phone with two hands with arms stretched high, so that from behind I see the phone screen of this person taking pictures in front of me instead of being able to enjoy the show.

As I said, this makes me very angry.

In fact yesterday I was at the theater, a wonderful theater because it was outdoors, in an abandoned mine, Montevecchio, near Guspini, a town in Sardinia, is an incredibly suggestive place: during the day it seems to be in a ghost town of the Far West, at night it seems to be in a zombie movie because there are all these beautiful industrial archeology structures, illuminated with strategically placed spotlights, then yesterday there was also almost a full moon, so there was this fantastic, magical atmosphere, and there was also a beautiful theater show.

I was sitting there, outdoors, enjoying this breeze because, I don't know if you've noticed, but for several weeks in Sardinia the temperatures have been very high, so it was a bit higher than in Cagliari where I live and there was a little breeze and what is this woman doing here? As soon as the show starts she starts filming with her arms up, taking pictures, and I say oh well, she'll be doing it at the beginning, then she'll stop.

No, she keeps on doing it. She was in the front row, I was in the third row.
Finally I couldn't resist, I got up and touched her shoulders and said, can you please stop disturbing the people behind you? And she stopped, and if she hadn't stopped I don't know what I would have done, really.

Dunno, people who don't know why they go to the theatre, they should stay at home and watch trash TV realities and similar stuff because evidently they haven't grasped the engaging, participatory aspect of live theater. Come on! Enjoy the show and let others enjoy it too!

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Today I want to tell you about something a little gross: the life of these poor cicadas, these beautiful insects that have a very long life, and sometimes they go underground for many years, 13 years, 17 years, and then they come up to the surface to mate.
But let's go straight to the grosser details of this thing here. What happens to the poor cicadas? Then the cicadas have an enemy: a fungus that infects the cicada from within, a parasitic fungus, castrates it and replaces the cicada's genital organs with a spore plug, then the cicada doesn't even realise it has this fungus inside, so it goes around and keeps mating and while it mates it keeps spreading this fungus.
Why doesn't the cicada notice that it has inside the fungus that is eating its internal organs from the inside? Because the fungus injects it with a very powerful hallucinogen, an amphetamine, psilocybin, which is the same substance that is contained in magic mushrooms. So this cicada is possibly walking around, even with half of its body missing, and desperately trying to mate.
Another enemy from the poor cicada is the killer wasp. The name alone lets us know that it is quite a character. What does the killer wasp do? It catches the cicada in flight, immobilises it with something, not a sleeping fluid, something that paralyses it, brings the body of the cicada still alive, keeps it alive, and inside the cicada, it puts the larvae. The larvae come out and begin to eat the cicada from the inside, leaving the nerve organs for last, so the cicada stays alive as long as possible, then, when they just can't take it anymore, the larvae also eat the last vital organ and mama killer wasp brings another cicada, again paralysed , and the larvae get into it and continue to eat their, their way out until they are ready to come out in wasp form.
Yes, these poor cicadas have a very difficult life, as you can see they are beautiful, fascinating and very noisy animals, they come out in the summer, to give you an idea of the noise cicadas make, if you have never heard them, they can reach as high as 100 decibels that the noise of a power saw a few inches from your ear, be careful not to hurt yourself by being so close to the power saw.
They are incredibly fascinating insects, also very long-lived, although most of their life they live underground, waiting for the right time to come out, in fact they have these very strange cycles of two, five, but also 13, 17 years, 13 and 17 are two prime numbers. Why? In order not to get in sync with their enemies, in short, super fascinating insects.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 579 Leggendo Castaneda a Goa

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Today we are talking about Carlos Castaneda and lucid dreams, and I want to tell you how I met Carlos Castaneda many years ago while I was in Goa, India.
It was a very special situation, in the sense that I had a lot of free time because I was actually spending a long, long, long period, several months, in Goa, we are in the early 1990s, maybe just 1990, late 1990, and I am spending a very long vacation in Asia and within this vacation I spent about six months in Goa.
At that time Goa was a place frequented by beatniks, there were a lot of Germans. I was living in Berlin at the time, so it was in the wake of the techno parties of the Berlin DJs that I came to Goa and there, well, I had a lot of time on my hands, since Goa, at that time, in the little beach of Calangute where I lived for several months, there was no tourist facility but there were only fishermen's houses, and in fact I lived in one of the fishermen's houses that I rented, which was beautiful by the way, with a shower outside that was made out of woven banana leaves, then every night the lady of the house would bring me the bucket of hot water to mix with the fresh water to take a shower. And as I said, there it was full of slackers and SFA, including me, people doing nothing other than playing matkot on the very long beach of Calangute there wasn't much else to do, then every once in a while taking your bike to go to the post office to see if any letters had arrived at poste restante.
So, there was also a place here where you could borrow books, left by travellers, and so I met Carlos Castaneda and The Teachings of Don Juan, and since I didn't have much else to do, I started experimenting with lucid dreams.
What is lucid dreaming? It is a dream in which you, while dreaming, are aware that you are dreaming. So there's a whole preparation that you have to do, then you're inside the dream and you do things like: raise your right hand, and in the dream you raise your right hand, in the sense that you tell yourself, you rehearse and then slowly there's escalation, you can start moving, walking around etc.
I did, yes, several experiments and I have to say that I remember being able to lift a hand, I don't remember if the left or the right, in the dream, then, as it happens, as it often happened in that period, all very hazy, I lost my patience and I started doing something else, now I don't even remember what I had put myself to do, anyway the Teachings of Don Juan by Carlos Castaneda, I realised is a book that at that time everybody was reading and now it is coming back in fashion because I think they issued a new edition. Anyway, if you feel like experimenting with lucid dreams, Carlos Castaneda's Teachings of Don Juan.

Parable of the Sower di Octavia Butler è uno di quelli.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

It's been a long time since I've been able to find a book that I'm so passionate about that I carry it around with me and as soon as I have a moment of time, I don't know, when I'm waiting for the water to boil, I immediately start flipping through it and picking up exactly where I finished reading. It is a somewhat difficult book to read because of the subject matter, however it is beautifully written and introduced me to a writer I had heard a lot about, and I had also read small excerpts, passages, however I had never read a book of hers from beginning to end.
I am talking about Octavia Butler, an American writer, African American. The book that I fell in love with is, the English title is 'Parabole of the Sower', which I have seen in Italian, to my great sadness, has been translated as 'the parable of the (male) sower', whereas it should be the parable of the (female) sower, I'll have to look a little at who translated this book to give some virtual slaps.
It is a difficult book to read because it talks about a very, very near future in which society is disintegrating due to lack of raw materials, lack of food, lack of water. People are trying to fix themselves a little as they can, to defend themselves from the looters who go around stealing and killing and destroying those who still have a roof over their houses.
But it's a very well written book, told from the point of view, the narrator is this girl who at the beginning of the book is 14 or 15 years old, I've come now to the last pages and she's 18, and it's very well written because even though she talks about sometimes philosophical sometimes religious things, however she's not there with her finger pointing and preaching and the narrator's voice is very fresh, very beautiful , very ... I got very much involved, in fact, as I said, this is a characteristic of books that we like, as we are get involved with the characters who seem real to us, we want to know how it goes on, we want to know what happens, we want things to go well for the characters.
I repeat, there are only a few more pages to go, in fact that's also why I was so late today for the 3 minutes podcast because I was literally glued to the page, every time I would say, now I'm going to put it aside and do something else, then I would always find an excuse to pick it up again and start reading again. I'm about to finish it, I'll have to buy a couple more of hers right away, because Octavia Butler is really a very good writer.
