    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Cosa succede in Italia?

    TRANSLATION

When a woman comes to work in Italy from abroad, the first thing that strikes her is the creeping sexism throughout society and particularly in the workplace. Why am I telling you about this? Partly because of an exchange I had recently on social, partly because I just finished listening to Jonathan Zenti Estadeli's excellent podcast, which I highly recommend you follow I will also put the link then in the program notes.

What is happening in Italy? What happens in Italy is that there is this perception that certain comments are permissible to make. You make these comments abroad as well, but the difference is that if you make such a comment in Australia in the workplace you leave, or at any rate you are subjected to a process, in the sense of a disciplinary procedure. Here, in Italy it is not, because there is a perception that certain comments are not only not offensive but are 'neutral'? So, e.g., one says look at that one there how ugly that dress looks on her, look at that one she's fat and so on or one makes comments about her alleged sexual availability, because I put them on the same level comments about clothing, about a woman's shape or her availability to go all the way to harassment, that's it, they think that's the neutral degree of expression, they think they are not offending anybody, that they are simply stating what it is, describing the reality .

I think people are convinced of this because otherwise they would not make certain statements, I don't know, on public television, I think of certain comments of sports commentators, who were making horrible comments about the physical appearance of female athletes and they were doing it publicly, they were not even pretending to hide because they thought, I'm not doing anything wrong, I'm simply commenting on what I see.

Here, this is the toxic culture that there is in general in Italian society and then of course, because it is everywhere, it is also found in the workplace.

What to do? What we can do is not to tolerate and when we see these comments being made, especially when they are not directed at us, we should intervene, we should say something we should point it out. Why especially when they are not directed at us? Because often the person who is at the center of these comments is left feeling terrible about it, they don't know how to respond in the moment, a humiliating thing, it's a hurtful thing, you don't always have the quick thinking, so instead we, who are aware of it, should intervene and we shouldn't let one pass, because that's the only way to change the toxic sexist culture that is rampant in Italy. And believe me, it really is. If you scrape underneath even unsuspected people make the offensive comment.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 596 Cadaveri, killer e investigazioni

    TRANSLATION

I heard a very interesting analysis of how the role of the dead body has changed in mystery stories, in detective stories. Something that I am very interested in, also because it's a genre of reading and also viewing that I really like and something I had never thought about, anyway I will tell you what it is about.

First of all, it's a reflection made by Amor Towles who is a writer, and I'll also put the link to it, and I heard it on the Book Review podcast from the New York Times, and I'll put the link to that as well. So this is the consideration, that in the twentieth century, the last century, it feels a bit weird to say the last century, anyway in the last century crime and detective stories unfold starting from the dead body and the finding of the dead body. Think of the typical Agatha Christie story with Poirot, with Miss Marple discovering a corpse and then the investigation goes from there, and the investigations are all about what the person was like when they were alive and who might have had a reason to hate them. So the dead person was always the focus of analysis, and the detective used intuition to then discover what the ramifications were.

Now, in the second half of the twentieth century, but then especially in the early 2000s, the figure of the detective has changed dramatically, and s/he is no longer this person with intuition who goes and discovers, but simply becomes a doer or executor of tasks, is hired to find the missing wife, the missing jewel, etc., then investigates, goes to question someone in China Town and after a few days that person boom, is found dead, why? Because that person had seen or heard something, had been a witness, and there the detective realises to be in the midst of something much bigger, it's not simply a missing woman, a missing jewel, etc., but something bigger, so it also fundamentally changes the way you go about doing the investigation.

And then lately especially in the 2000s, the phenomenon of the serial killer has exploded, so if before the investigator had to find out all the things they could about the dead person, and the body actually was at the center of everything, now the investigator has instead to try to find out what moves the serial killer, and the body is no longer one around which everything is developed, but there are many, the serial killer kills six, seven, eight people, not only that, but whereas before the people who died in Agatha Christie's books were people with whom we could not identify, the serial killer kills in a seemingly random way, so there is also more identification.

In short, very interesting reflections that if you like the genre I definitely recommend you listen to the podcast, which is in English but anyway, what can I say?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG Translation below]

Eh?

    TRANSLATION

Today I will definitely stop feeling guilty when, looking for something that I cannot find, I go and look inside the freezer or inside the box where I keep the blender with its various components, because today, for the third time, I found something that I thought was now irretrievably lost, actually something of some value, and instead I found it in a place I never in my life would have dreamed of finding it. But let's proceed in order.

The first time I lost, okay not the first time, but that I remember lately, something of some value and then I found it in an unthinkable place, it was last year, however the loss was two years ago, a pair of headphones, headphones that transmit sound through the bones of the skull, intercranial, paid almost 200€, so I cared about it, and suddenly, these headphones would sometimes disappear, then anyway they would appear again because those were the places where I left them, and then suddenly they disappeared and I couldn't find them anymore, so much so that I had to buy another pair, with great curses or what the heck, what the heck, what the heck! And then I found them, just after more than a year, doing the closet change, taking out the comforter that was inside of those bags, you know, the plastic ones that you vacuum the air out of, and as I opened the bag, opened the comforter and in the middle were my headphones. I could have searched forever.

Another incident is my son's health card, which we also searched far and wide for, asked for the duplicate and then, after a long time he had the duplicate, we found the card had ended up inside the electric grid box. Please no one ask why or how.

Well today, as all good things come in threes, I found my Montblanc again. I'm very fond of my Montblanc, I have a collection of pens, a couple of them are also Montblanc, this one particularly though, because it's a ballpoint pen, because the fountain pen one is a bit problematic to carry around, so I normally use it and a few months ago I couldn't find it anymore. I had kissed it goodbye, and today, as I was getting out of the car, my eye went to the empty space under the rail where the seat slides and I saw my Montblanc starlet. I tried to catch it and couldn't and it went even deeper. Now I will have to wait for my husband to come and disassemble, literally he will have to I guess, disassemble the seat because it is unreachable, but it is safe there.

So from now on when I lose something I will look in the places, just inside the freezer, in the box where I keep the vacuum cleaner things, in the blender box, IDK, where I have the tools the hammer, things like that. Because, who knows, there are leprechauns who go and hide things from me. Huh?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Cos'è Sharknado? È un film che parla di squali. No, non è vero.

    TRANSLATION

What is Sharknado? It is a film about sharks. No, it's not. Sharknado is a series of movies, the first one released in 2013 exactly ten years ago, keep that in mind, and they made then I think six, I should know because I've seen them all, yes, I think there are six.

What is special about this series of films? It's that when the first Sharknado came out, in 2013, precisely, I can imagine the meeting they had to discuss whether or not to make this movie: these people presented the idea, ah yes we have the idea of this, to make a movie where sharks are taken from the sea and brought by a tornado to rain down on people and the sharks yes, they end up inside the pools and they end up where the is water, and they eat and kill everybody.

I am not spoiling much, partly because there is not that much storytelling in the first one, and in the others that follow even less. I don't know how the producers reacted to it, whether they thought it was a brilliant idea or one of those ideas that was so bad to be good, the fact is that the first Sharknado has some vague ... I'm not saying that it wants to seem real, that it wants verisimilitude, here I couldn't think of the word, it has some, so, whiff of verisimilitude that a person, if they really really pull it, I mean they say ah well, yeah, something like that could happen.

Yeah, however, already toward the end of the first Sharknado movie, the original one from 2013, it becomes clear that something like this could never, ever, ever happen in ral life. Then as you go on in Sharknado 2, 3 etc. until the last one, which I think is the sixth one, things become so far-fetched, so blatantly exaggerated that there is, I think in the last film there is a baby, an infant who with a chainsaw opens the belly -- eaten by the shark excuse me -- eaten by the shark and with a chainsaw the infant, maybe not even born yet, is being born, opens the belly of the shark and comes out, I mean things really that are neither in heaven nor on earth.

But why am I telling you about Sharknado today? Because you see, now that it marks ten years since the release of the first Sharknado, there will be a re-release of the first original in theaters, completely remastered with new never-before-seen sound effects, never-before-seen visual effects. There you go, so it's going to be at the cinema again and it's definitely going to be a good experience to go there all together, yeah! And shout and laugh. For once talking and laughing out loud at the cinema will be allowed not only, but also desirable.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION
When I lived in Melbourne, for about a month, a month and a half, in my neighborhood, Thornbury, someone opened a bar that was basically hastily set up inside a garage and it was very simple, there was the counter where you could order drinks, and then all along the walls there were benches, attached to the wall, with high stools, or rather not stools, they were another thing that I will now tell you what it was, then at each station there was a screen, like a television screen, and this place was a place dedicated to cyclists.

In fact, taking advantage of the countertrend both seasonally and temporally, in fact in June in Melbourne it's winter, it's the middle of winter, they put instead of stools, bicycles, exercise bikes, the kind that are in the gym with which you can pedal without going anywhere, and this place was only showing on the televisions the stages of the Tour de France, when it was live it was showing it live, when it corresponded to the time it was open, otherwise it was showing recordings.

I went there once and I must say that it was a very nice experience, especially when you went there at night, because it stayed open late, to also see the kind of people who go there.

I thought about that bar, which then I think closed down right after the end of the Giro, or rather the Tour, if cycling fans hear me [saying Giro] they'll whack me over the head, I came up with another kind of bar that you could open, so I'll give you the idea then if anyone does open it, let you know, that is to use those videos that, there are several on youtube, show virtual walks. Basically someone puts a GoPro camera on their head and then walks for hours, 1 hour or 2 hours what you want, through the streets of different cities, different landscapes.

I am currently following one called Virtual Japan and there are these walks, both during the day and at night, through the streets of Tokyo. Nothing much, simply a person walking, and so you follow at the same pace this person is walking.

Here, take a garage, put stations there, instead of bicycles, put tapirulans, and then put small screens where you will show, everyone can look up then in a menu if they want to walk in Tokyo, New York, Milan or the desert.

In my opinion, this is something that would work because it would combine the curiosity of seeing places you don't know with the enjoyment, maybe even inspire some writers who want to set one of their adventures or novels there. Eh, how about that?

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I am not particularly a fan of zoos and aquariums, although I understand that often the animals that are locked up in the zoo are animals that are now no longer captured to be put in the zoo, but animals that are rescued and that for a variety of circumstances can no longer be reintroduced to their natural environment.
Probably IDK, who knows if the same thing happens with aquariums and the fish in them, but I must sadly admit that visiting certain aquariums is very impressive.
Very nice the aquarium in Melbourne, a very nice aquarium I saw in Spain, in Valencia, I understand that the one in Genoa is also very nice.
Today I want to tell you about an aquarium that I haven't visited and that, honestly, I don't know if I'm going to visit, and it is located in Japan, specifically in the city of Kobe. The aquarium is called Atoa, I have seen the website and, just like all aquariums, it has different sections, there is also a part where you can buy items, so there is also the shop to remind you of this beautiful visit, but the thing that characterises the Kobe aquarium is that it really wants to make the visitor have an experience that embraces all five senses and among the various senses that they want to embrace there is also the sense of smell.
Now, when you visit a zoo, depending on the areas you visit, there are stronger or weaker smells. Here, the aquarium in Kobe wanted to go overboard and has a section where there are digital images of various animals and these digital images have a glass and in the glass there is a, there is cut out a circle where the person who is visiting the aquarium can bring the nose and the images that there are of the animals match the glass circle cut out with the anus of the animals.
So at the Atoa Aquarium in Kobe, you can get your nose close and smell what the anus of different animals smells like. And apparently, from the videos that have seen posted, at least on YouTube, the penguin's is not too, not too stinky, however, it appears that the tiger's anus is very smelly.
So if you happen to encounter a tiger, do not go near its anus because it is very stinky.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Why talk about my cats' eating habits? Because my cats have been occupying my mind since this morning at 05:30 a.m. when my husband got up and went for his morning run, I didn't follow him because I've been sleeping badly lately, I sleep poorly, I don't fall asleep until 2 a.m. so by 5 a.m. I'm a wreck, and before I went out I had the unfortunate idea to feed the cats Sputnik and Mazinga. I then precisely stayed in bed enjoying also, by the way, that little bit of cool breeze that came in through the wide-open window during the night, however, I could not enjoy it more, because I don't know whether in what my husband fed the cats there was amphetamine, cocaine? I don't know, but the cats went crazy: they were running over me, that is, they were chasing each other around the house, and the bed, or rather my person under the bed sheet, was used as a springboard and then they would slingshot onto the table, onto the computer, onto everything around it.
ANyway, so the cats have been occupying my mind since early this morning, then of course when I got up at a quarter to 6, they were quietly sleeping at 6, they always do this, why? What do I want to racocnect? Ah, there it is, yes there is my cat, especially Sputnik, who has quite un-cat-like food tastes. I already knew this, but in the summertime I further confirm it, she goes very fond of melon and especially of melon she likes that part that we usually remove, the part that definitely has a scientific name, but which I ignore, to which the seeds are attached, here are the seeds I never even let her put them in her mouth because I guess they hurt? I don't know, anyway I don't make her eat them, however I make her eat that thing there that we throw away, because you don't eat it, sometimes I also give her pieces of melon to see if it's just that thing there or the melon that she eats. She likes everything, and she just goes crazy, when I take the melon from the refrigerator she starts circling around me, meowing, and then when I give it to her she eats it, she has a hard time eating because cats don't have molars, they only have incisors and canines - canines should be called kittens - anyway and so she has a hard time getting it into her mouth, however she eats it, she even helps herself with her raspy tongue, and she is over the moon when I give her melon to eat.
Yes, I tried to give melon to Mazinga as well, because Mazinga looks at us doggishly -- catlike -- however, he turns his face the other way, as if to say but you are dumb, do I have to eat this junk? So Sputnik likes melon.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 590 Sui mancini, anzi, no

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

Nessuno in particolare.

    TRANSLATION

This morning, when I got up very early because I have difficulty sleeping, I wake up early, I can't get back to sleep, etc., anyway, I thought I would do these 3 minutes today talking about international left handers day, because you know every day on the calendar is dedicated to something or someone today's day is dedicated to lefties, since I have one of them at home, I thought I would talk and also dispel some myths when I hear, ah! lefties are smarter, they are better at sports. It's not that they're smarter or better at sports, it's that if you play tennis and you're left-handed you're always training with right-handed people and so you're used to right-handed play. If, on the other hand, you are right-handed with lefties, you play little with them, you are not used to the maqncini game and so on and so forth.

But then I changed my mind. Why? Because I've been putting off compiling the raw 3 minutes, the recording, it's kind of so pre-ferragostian hot days, so whatever, then I got into watching something on Netflix, a Japanese thing that's kind of depressing, so I don't feel like talking about lefties right now, I don't feel like it, I feel like complaining and so I'm going to complain, and what am I complaining about? I'm going to complain about those who preach well and practice badly.

None in particular. But I do happen to cast my eye on articles, or even on social media, by people, ah, that's it, you should do that, companies should do that, human beings should do that. Then you go and see, go and scratch and the same people who preach, behave like this, but they don't, because they argue, well, now I actually cannot, eh yes, but it's not possible. Whatever, maybe someone might even accuse me of preaching, preaching, period. Because then I also do the things that I say, also because, I mean let's face it, my preaching space is very limited since I live in a semi-remote island in southern Europe and so it's not like my range is more influential than that, however what I say I also do, otherwise I don't say it, I don't care because I have arrived at a time in my life, at an age where I don't have to be accountable to anybody. So if I do something, good for me, nobody gives a damn.

Yes, even by the tone of my voice you hear that a little bit sing-songy, a little bit drawling I don't have much energy today. Who knows for how long, I'll still keep recording the 3 daily minutes.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 589 Vecchi libri a Byron Bay

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

In the hot August or Augustinian hours, I don't know, anyway in the hot August afternoon hours, when I didn't know what to read, I went back to the old books. Occasionally I pick up old books that I read many, many years ago, whose plot I don't remember very well, but I remember whether I liked them or not.

Here is the book that I took and a book that I remember, I had liked very much, for more than one reason. First, it is a book bought second-hand and in fact it still has the glow-in-the-dark yellow sticker from the store where I bought it 'Icon Books, $2 Byron Bay'. And already that makes me like it because it's a book I bought when I first went on vacation to Byron Bay.

Baron Bay was in the '60s, '70s, IDK a hippy paradise in Australia. When I visited in the 1990s it was still quite a paradise, now I understand it is much less paradise, however it is still a great place.
The funny thing is that when I bought this book which is titled 'Inside Mr Enderby', I didn't realise or didn't connect immediately that the author is an author who is actually very famous, you see that name, Anthony Burgess, maybe the name doesn't ring a bell, but he is the author of 'A Clockwork Orange', another book I read, you can tell very little from the book because one of the characteristics of Anthony Burgess was this incredible love of language and linguistics, in fact he was also a skilled linguist, he taught linguistics, he taught linguistics for a long time and spoke several languages, as well as wrote a lot of books, actually, the most famous one is 'A Clockwork Orange' but he wrote many others, only at home I have, IDK, 5 or 6 of his because it gets me so: once I buy a book that I like, then I try to buy several, many by the same author. He also wrote music librettos, he even translated the opera Carmen, as well as having translated also, I think, the Odyssey or one of these big books like that.

Anyway, why did I set out to buy so many books by Anthony Burgess? Because he has an incredibly funny writing, satirical, and he does a very subtle satire, sometimes he refers to things that I don't know, then I go and I look it up. Anyway, it was nice to rediscover in this post-dawn quiet of an August afternoon, my old book bought in Byron Bay.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 588 Schermi malvagi

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

These kids today always attached to cell phones and always attached to computers!

No, I'm not complaining about today's kids, I'm repeating what I hear and read from IDK, the well-thinking people on duty who are picking on these poor kids who, as if they don't have a hard enough life as it is, with all that we adults have done to them, are also being blamed for something that, let's face it, they are not responsible for, because the fact that boys and girls are so much time attached to cell phones and screens is not their fault, but it's because what they use in their computer and cell phone screens is something incredibly sophisticated, for the creation of which the organisations, the firms that produce the games, produce the sites, produce the apps, produce everything, pay the cream of engineers and designers and people skilled in psychology and marketing, to make these things incredibly addictive, that is, that when you start using them you can't stop.

And this is done actually with studies done deliberately where they ask, how is it that we can do to make users stay longer and longer within our apps, within our programs?

So how can we pick on one individual, who certainly doesn't have all these degrees in psychology, in marketing, in occult persuasion? How can we rebel or otherwise defend against what is instead an inherent feature of those very sites?

Let's say lashing out at computers and cell phones and wanting to put limits on the use of these tools is like if to fight heroin you say whatever, no more syringes, let's put a limit on syringes, instead of thinking that heroin is the addictive substance, so it's not the computer, it's not the cell phone that's addictive, it's the programs that are used here, and we all know this even us adults because we too have great difficulty in detaching ourselves from social media and detaching ourselves from what we are doing.

And in fact the best way to make 1 hour go by is to get in front of the computer, do what we like doing, and the hour will go by without us realising it, and then we will have wasted another hour of our life.

So let's reflect: it is not the fault of the boys, the girls, but we should perhaps limit the way these tools are made so highly addictive.
