Cos'è un dating show?

Come funziona?

    TRANSLATION

The first difficulty, when this morning I decided the topic I would talk about, was finding the Italian translation of 'reality dating show.' What is a dating show? Couples game? It's that program, usually television, where males and females go and the purpose of the game is to find, to pair up these people.

Usually there is one woman and several men, or one man and several women. I'm not particularly attracted to these kinds of TV shows, because in general, generalist television doesn't attract me, doesn't interest me, and then these TV shows have been around for decades, so whatever they show, we've seen it all before.

And then this morning I stumbled upon one of these programs that not only seemed different from the others, but I was so interested that I can't wait to listen to the next release, and this program found in an unusual way, because first of all it's not on television, but it's a podcast, so it's audio only, and then also the way it's conducted is interesting. How does it work?

There is a woman who will hear by telephone from six people who are possible partners, they are of different sexes, and only on the basis of the telephone conversations will she then decide which of these six people might become the potential partner. Then there is the twist that once the woman, Maxine, (not her real name), once Maxine has chosen one of these six characters, the chosen character is given a choice: do you want a paid vacation, all paid up with Maxine, or do you want thousand dollars?

Here, these are some interesting details, because first of all, it's a program where there's not a woman looking for men, but let's say it's all based on elective affinities, regardless of gender, and that already made me like it, people don't use their real names, so they can't go and look each other up online and they can't even describe themselves physically, so it's actually a purely affinity-based thing... audio, almost I could say. And then also the final prize, a thousand dollars that certainly doesn't change anybody's life, so let's say it's really based on the sympathy and the conversations that are had on the phone between these people.

It immediately grabbed me, I listened to the first two episodes which are online, I will put the link, it is in English, if you understand English I recommend you give it a listen because it is really worth it.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 576 Il mare in Sardegna
Però dentro di me so che è vero.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

Son nata in Sardegna!?

    TRANSLATION

The sea in Sardinia is a bit of a complicated thing, at least for me, because I was born in Sardinia and have always been accustomed, since I was a child, to going to the beach in fantastic places where the water is clear, blue, the beaches have fine sand, different beaches with different colored sand and, at least most of the year, places where there are few people, so you can enjoy the solitude on the beach, which is the most beautiful thing.

I was saying, it's a bit of a special thing the sea in Sardinia, because if you were born in Sardinia, then it becomes a bit complicated to go swimming elsewhere. I remember the first times I started seeing beaches outside Sardinia, maybe one of the first beaches I saw that was not Sardinian was the Lido in Venice, which I couldn't even reconcile the fact that it was a beach because it was so different, so-yes, different, now I don't want to use adjectives, however it was very different from the things I was used to.

Then later on I also saw very beautiful beaches in Asia, in Africa and in Australia, of course there are fantastic beaches, however there is always this thing here that I remember twenty thousand years ago when I went to an island in Thailand that at that time was very little known, and now I found out it has become a very touristy thing, I'm talking about the 1990s the island of Ko Samui, and I remember this beautiful beach, the transparent water, and the people who were with me saying, look at this beautiful, beautiful thing, and I said, yes, yes, very beautiful, very beautiful, however it was nothing different from what I was used to. And same thing for Fiji, same thing for a lot of places I've been to, where there was beautiful clear water, however when you're used to seeing the bottom, the sand being on a boat with four meters of water between you and the bottom, let's say it's a little difficult for you to be impressed by the beauty of the beaches, precisely because you're born a little penalised and you also come across as a little bit of a snooty person who's never satisfied.

And in fact there are many Sardinians who say eh, the sea of Sardinia, the most beautiful sea in the world. It bothers me a lot because these are people who have never left home. But unfortunately they are also right that the sea in Sardinia is a magnificent thing, I have been to places that gave me the impression of being in church with organs playing and goosebumps because they are really magical places. And what can I tell you? I was born in Sardinia!

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

A me è successo diverse volte.

    TRANSLATION
I bet it has happened to you too, you want to go to a city, you've read a lot about this city, you've seen the movies, then you finally get to go there and... disappointment, it's not as nice as you expected?
This has happened to me several times. Let's say that the only city in the world that I've been to, where I was looking forward to going, then the first time I went there many years ago and it didn't disappoint me was Venice, which precisely not only didn't disappoint me, but exceeded all expectations, because if a person has never been to Venice, they can't really imagine what it's like to be in the midst of so much beauty, so much splendor, so much decadence.
And it is no coincidence that Venice is one of the cities that has a syndrome named after her. What are city syndromes? And I'll also tell you now in a bit what the Venice syndrome consists of, which is anything but beautiful.
Perhaps the syndrome you know most related to a city is the Stockholm syndrome, which refers to the fact that people are kidnapped and the kidnapped people then begin to sympathise with the kidnappers. And it refers to a news case that occurred over the years, in the 1970s, I think to remember.
Then there is the Jerusalem syndrome, people go to Jerusalem, which is the temple of a lot of religions, and there I start to hallucinate religiously, so they go around the streets of Jerusalem reciting bible verses, convinced they are Moses and Jesus, or other mythological figures.
Then there is the Paris syndrome. Is it a particular syndrome because it only occurs on Japanese tourists who go to Paris and what does it do? There are anxiety episodes, persecution mania, they think the hotel room is bugged to record everything, or they think they are Sun King, Louis the 14th.
Another very famous among these syndromes is Stendhal syndrome, which is also known by the name Florence syndrome. Tourists go to Florence and are overwhelmed by so much beauty, so many incredible things and... there you go: tachycardia, dizziness, fainting, hallucinations and paranoia.
Then there is the Venice syndrome I mentioned earlier, people who go to Venice on purpose to commit suicide. This is kind pretty awful.
There are, I repeat, more than ten of these syndromes that have the name of a city and they are real things in the sense that they are medically studied, in fact the information I am giving you is in an article published in the Journal of the American Name Society, it cites all these examples, it says when they first occurred and what is the cure, most of the time the cure is to go back home and to rest.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Vabbè, andiamo a vedere cosa fanno i miei muratori.

    TRANSLATION

I have already mentioned several times the masons working on the facades of the buildings around my window, perhaps as I record today's 3-minute podcast you can hear them behind my back as well, because I have the window wide open and they are happily hammering around me, in front of me, with the wind in their favor, so you will probably hear them.
And if you don't hear them hammering, you might hear them, blaspheming. Why? Ah, that too, I've mentioned this in the past few days, I have the impression that the construction site that opened a few weeks ago in front of my window is populated a bit by people bullying in the workplace.
I don't see if they use helmets and these things here because, well, let's say in Italy, you know, it's like: put your helmet on, put your jacket as it's arriving... How was it again? the engineer? Yes, I heard this phrase when they were redoing the facade of my building and they were right in front of the window of the room where I have my recording studio.
Here, on the other hand, they shout allright, they project the voice shouting at each other. That is, probably the foreman, the older person who has the habit of treating people who share the palisade and scaffolding with him very badly, shouting. I repeat, I don't see them because they put a plastic things in front of the scaffolding, so they are hidden, and I don't even want to imagine the heat that will be there, and especially the heat that will have been there in the days just gone by, when temperatures were merrily exceeding 40 degrees, I use a phrase I just read somewhere: the Apocalypse was doing a mike check and succeeding in doing so.
IDK, I stay here, I hear them now and then these screams, but it's not like I can do anything, it's not like I can go there and say stop treating each other like this, treat each other well etc. But one reflection I want to make, though, I heard this somewhere too, so nothing original, don't expect original thoughts because I don't have the capacity righ now, so, when there was this big heat wave, the local TV stations, but also the national newspapers, were showing the poor tourists with drinking fountains in the cities. But who cares about tourists! I always say so, but who cares about tourists! Think of those who are working instead, those who are resurfacing the concrete in the streets, and then you know, here in Italy it is not even mandatory to cover up, to put on hats and so on. Here, let's think of those under the sun who work there and not those who go on vacation, that those who go on vacation have gone looking for it. They might as well have stayed home. Whatever, let's go see what my masons are doing.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, when you still you online by connecting with modem 52, 54 I don't remember, and you used the phone line, so if you used Internet you couldn't use the phone and using Internet cost a lot of money, well, back then not every house had Internet, in fact let's say it was a little bit rare to have Internet, and those who wanted to connect had to go to an Internet cafe.
Internet cafes were these magical places where you would go, to the end of the world, I remember a trip to Coober Pedy, in the center of Australia, a city that is practically underground because the temperatures are so high, center of miners and so on, and there I remember arriving, without of course knowing anyone, and finding on the main street a whole series of Internet cafes, and there you were connected to the world.
It was the first time that really there was this feeling of being part of, pass me the term now a little bit demodé, being part of the 'global village,' and it was much more than a place where you went to check email, see who had written to you, or to maybe check the newspaper, it was a place where expatriates hang out.
I remember visits made at home, when I came back from Australia I used to come and visit my family in Cagliari, and of course my family didn't have internet and cell phones with internet didn't exist yet, and I remember this pilgrimage I used to make to one of the many internet cafes that were in Cagliari, and there I also mirrored myself in all the people who frequented it, who like me were people passing through, who needed to communicate with someone else, in fact they would have conversations, they would look at emails, and the internet cafes also became a hangout, precisely of those who had no other place to go.
Then in the second decade of the 2000s, everyone now, and especially with the advent of the iPhone, everyone now has the internet in their pocket, superfast, so slowly internet cafes lost their function and in fact, if you look around, there are very few that you can see.
I think about it sometimes with nostalgia, though, because instead of going and watching internet in my pocket, it was a little more common experience, maybe a little bit the same difference as watching a movie in a cinema with lots of other people in the theater or alone at home on Netflix.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]
No, comunque è arrivato il maestrale.

    TRANSLATION
Ep. 572 Quando arriva il maestrale.mp3
The mistral has arrived. It came and slowly, starting late in the afternoon, then exploded overnight.
When the mistral comes in summer, after several weeks of very high temperatures, several days of temperatures consistently above 40 degrees, eh the mistral is something, it is a special thing and it is an event. People take to the streets, throwing their windows wide open.
I definitely felt the mistral coming tonight, the window wide open, I even had to close the window because when the mistral comes, it blows, then the bedroom window is at an angle, in a corridor of air, where the wind takes a lot of speed.
It is good because, yes, it is like resuming normal life, breathing a sigh of relief. It's kind of like when in tropical countries the temperature goes up and up and up and up and up a lot of humidity and then boom, comes the downpour ne of torrential rain that lasts very little and cleans the air.
The mistral is said to last an odd numbered days, so three, five, let's hope it doesn't last just one day. And literally it sweeps away all that heaviness that has been brought precisely by the days of excessive heat, where it is a struggle even to cross the street to enter the store that is in front of the house, that further you cannot go.
Then this air conditioning craze that when you go into stores in places, indoors there is air conditioning, then the body gets used to it and once you go out boom! it feels like they give you a thrashing in the head each time, and each time the body has to get used to the temperatures again.
No, anyway, the mistral has arrived. Wonderful news. Oh well, there are also negative aspects of the mistral, especially in summer, because there is the problem of fires, which then is a problem in quotes, let's say an issue ... they are crimes that are committed, because very often fires are arson, and I still after all these years, I still can't understand how you all can come to a person the idea of destroying the territory then how with all the means that we have now available still there is more or less impunity for arsonists.
All right, I will end on a colorful note : I have changed my breakfast drink, now I am drinking iced coffee, so coffee with ice, and I must say I like it.

There are days when you just can't talk about anything. It happened sometimes during COVID, which immersed me and the world in this bubble of undefined color, and any topic I wanted to address always seemed too serious, too trivial, too far from reality.

Now, for a number of reasons, this is one of those days, and since I really don't want to talk about anything in these daily thre minutes, I'm going to resort to a ploy that I used sometimes during COVID: I'm going to read aloud, back to back, in reverse alphabetical order, the words of a song that you too know, I won't even tell you the title, you'll recognize it.

    All right, relax and listen.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Sometimes I turn on mic for my 3 daily podcast and have no idea what topic I am going to talk about. Not because I lack topics, in fact every time I see something strange, funny, interesting, unusual, I make a little mental note. However, there are days when, not because of lack of desire, but just like that, there are days like that, without needing further explanation.

And today is one of those days that I'm here with the mic in my hand and it's already 40 seconds from the beginning of these 3 minutes and I can't decide what topic to talk about because the topics would be many, the topics are few then in the end only one, I don't know.

Whatever, so let's make these 2 minutes to the end of the 3 raw minutes pass like this. Outside my window there are still masons working on yet another facade, and every now and then I hear them shouting at each other. In my opinion, there are also some bad cases of bullying, because there is especially one who I think is the oldest who is always yelling at those who are younger, so they not only work under the hot sun but also yell at each other.

What do people do? They talk about the heat. In my opinion, this excessive talk of heat also raises the perceived temperature, not just the humidity. And then there is also this craze that for the last few years people have been saying ah, it's not the heat, it's the humidity. I don't understand this thing. I don't know, maybe our cities are becoming more humid, or before you didn't have all this data? When I was a child there was Colonel Bernacca who said the temperature once a day [on TV] and that was it. Now we have a super-sophisticated weather station in our cell phone so we are all experts, we know not only the temperature but also the perceived temperature, the future temperature, the next temperature, hour by hour, and we fixate a little bit. Yes so all this talk about the great heat that, using their words, 'the grip of the heat gripping us' and continuing to talk about it only adds to the sense of discomfort.

Some things, however, should be talked about, because as long as we talk about them they remain present with us and we remember them that way. Last seconds of the 3 daily minutes that today, today go like this, go like this.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Come funziona?

    TRANSLATION

I bet when you were little girls you too took the broom and straddled it and went around the kitchen, the hall, pretending that the broom was the horse's mane and the stick the horse's body.

Here, there are those who take these things more seriously than we did as little girls, and they came up with the hobbyhorse championship, and specifically the Finnish Hobbyhorse Championship, which from the name, you might have guessed, is held every year in Finland, and they just had their 10th edition where they horserace, I think it's also open to men, but the ones that I saw in the videos were more like children and young women and girls, from all over the world flock to Finland to participate in this event, which is a very serious thing, with lots of rules, lots of prizes and lots of drama that takes place, as it should, during a sporting event.

How does it work ? So it works that these girls come with their wooden horse, just as you imagine, with the wooden stick, and then the head which is made of soft material, and of course the horses also come dressed, so with braids, different colors, bridles, so then they put the stick between their legs and they walk with their legs, however they do a whole series of activities just as you do when you ride a horse.

There are... Then there is dressage, show jumping, 80 centimeter show jumping, there is even American riding, that is done with a different saddle and I don't know what it means then in this case, since there is no saddle, because as I told you they have the sticks, just as you do, between the legs and then they run.

I've seen videos, it's a lot of fun also because there is actually an athletic effort, think about having to jump over an obstacle and doing it while holding a stick between your legs. Also very funny to see dressage, which is a terrible thing when I see horses do it because it seems to me something incredibly against nature for a horse to go there with its little steps, however seen done by the girls is quite funny.

Anyway, this year more than 1,500 people attended this grand gala. If you are interested, I will put the links in the program notes, so you can sign up as well. It is held every year at the beginning of the summer, so you have almost a year to prepare, and be sure to let me know if you participate that I will be rooting for you and interviewing you to find out what it is like to participate in the Finnish Hobbyhorse Championship.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 568 Walter Rolfo mago motivazionale

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I'm so glad I went to see Walter Rolfo, motivational wizard. And when I say motivational wizard, I don't mean he's a wizard at motivating others, no, he's a wizard, and he also gives things for the audience in the room to think about, which then everyone does what they want with it.

It was a very enjoyable experience from the very beginning. I was waiting to see Walter Rolfo, I had never seen him, however I wanted to see the show at the suggestion of my friend Alessandra, whom once again I thank. While I was waiting for the show to start, there was something else before, I stuck my head in the hall, where there was air conditioning (hallelujah !) and I asked the first person who was sitting there next to the door, excuse me, is this where Walter Rolfo will perform? And this person replies, yes, yes after this, and then after a second, the person looks at me and continues, and I recommend to come back because they tell me he is very good, and I am a little bit so piqued, eh, I know he is very good, I came especially to see him! Of course I come back! I say to myself, but what's with this guy, of course I'm coming! Anyway. Then the previous show ends and his show begins, I sit in the front row, and of course the person who had recommended that I come back to see the show was him, Walter Rolfo.

No, this is just a small episode, the show was really engaging, exciting... well, these things here can't be told, you have to experience them firsthand, I'll put all the relevant links in the program notes.

If you trust my taste and you happen to have Walter Rolfo doing a show near where you are, I assure you, go see it because it is worth it, absolutely worth it.

He practices the doctrine of happiness, teaches Happiness Engineering and asks very legitimate questions. In school they teach us how to do calculus, capitals, how to do chemical reactions, however, no one teaches us how to deal with the things of life. What to do when a person you want to have as a partner doesn't want you, when there's a bereavement, how to cope with the big challenges of life that then, if we're lucky, we're helped by our parents, our family, our friends, but there are also those who don't have these people by our side and still no one is infallible, one should, it would be nice to have some guidance on this.

And then in his show there is a lot of magic. Proper magic, like Silvan the magician, abracadabra magic, those things that you look at them and in the room you hear a "Oh!!!", of wonder.

So spot for Walter, whom I thank so much for letting us experience those magical moments, yes, if he is not in your neck of the woods, go find him. And long live happiness!
