  • 3' grezzi Ep. 547 Lo squalo sbagliato

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

I don't know if you've ever happened to take the wrong road and precisely because you took the wrong road, discover something beautiful, something different that you had never seen before, that you had never noticed.

It often happens to me to take the wrong road and sometimes I also happen to discover things that otherwise I would have never seen. Why is that? Because what some call mistakes are actually constraints that lead us to do things differently, but also to see the world in a different way. A bit. This is what happened to the director Steven Spielberg when he made the film Jaws in 1974. What happened?

Spielberg wanted to make, he had in mind this idea of a killer shark that terrorizes the beaches. Well, we all know the story, I think most of us have seen it, if not at the cinema, at least on television, some scenes of the film Jaws. The original idea of Spielberg was to use a huge animated puppet, mechanically moved, which was supposed to be present in all the scenes of the film, to emphasize even more the obsession, the fear, the way this shark truly terrified everyone around. And what happened?

However, what happened is that once this big puppet was prepared, I imagine they must have worked on it for a long time following Spielberg's instructions, so, like this, big, gigantic, definitely unrealistic, and what happened? They put this big puppet in the seawater, and if you have ever put something in seawater, you know what the saltwater does, it ruins everything. So the big puppet was no longer usable because it practically didn't work, because the seawater corroded all the mechanisms, so Spielberg had to largely give up using the puppet, which is actually seen very little in the film.

But what happened? In order to give the viewers a sense of impending danger, terror, fear, he had to resort to other methods. So the music, the music of Jaws, very beautiful, very ominous, but above all the shots taken from the shark's point of view, which are very unsettling and scary.

This is to say that we should not be discouraged when something doesn't work, but we should find a way around what others call a problem and see it as an opportunity to further develop our creativity.

Orrore!

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Rifletteteci, rifletteteci.

    TRANSLATION

When as a child I accompanied my mother to do the shopping at the market or at the local shop, Mum, like all the other women who did the shopping, because it was practically impossible to spot a man doing the shopping, so what did all the women do? They took the bag and put the tomatoes, the fruit and the oranges and the grapes into it with their bare hands. The horror!

Some time ago, a few decades ago, the fashion of using gloves to take the stuff in the supermarket to put it inside the bag came out. And then, a few years ago, in Italy it became an absolute obligation. In fact, if anyone dares to touch the fruit without the plastic glove, anathema! The sirens blare, they are incinerated on the spot by a laser beam that starts from the ceiling of the supermarket.

Now imagine my surprise, I was stunned, when some time ago I was in France, in Paris, in a large supermarket and, listen, listen: in France people put fruit in the bag without using gloves. I felt like a thief, I felt like a murderer when I tastefully touched the bananas and put them inside my bag.

Now let's reflect for a moment: what is the reason why I should put on plastic gloves to touch the banana or potato or orange which I will then consume at home, or even the tomato. You see, I peel the banana, so whatever it touches I don't care because I don't ingest the peel anyway, I don't eat it.

With tomato, it is true that I then have to put it in my mouth with the skin on, but my dearest, hopefully once I have brought the fruit and vegetables home I will wash them under running water and maybe even rub them.

I don't know, I say, if you're afraid of germs that can infect you through my hands because you eat fruit without washing, then I guess what you need goes well beyond a pair of gloves.

Because, pay attention to it the next time you go to the supermarket and look at the mountain of plastic that accumulates and is wasted, also because, it must have happened to you too, I put on these bloody gloves, I take the fruit, then I throw them away and then half way, when I'm already in the aisle where there are eggs and sugar, I remember that I also had to get another thing in the fruit corner and I have to get another pair of gloves, it's an incredible waste.

Then I repeat, I wash my tomatoes well before eating them and I also wash my hands before sitting at the table. And if you really want to go overboard, wash the peel of the bananas. What shall I say? Think about it, think about it.

    TRANSLATION
Imagine that you are crossing a square, perhaps in Copenhagen, you are walking and as you are walking, from the ground, from the manholes on the ground, there are noises coming out of the ground that are frightening, noises that sound like chains being dragged along the ground, that sound like the rumbling of the belly of a giant volcano about to explode, and other noises that make you think of medieval torture.

That's kind of the picture that presented itself to those who last October, so October 2022, took a walk in the square that now I can't remember what it's called, I read it, anyway it's a major square in Copenhagen, where an artist had taken together, an artist who worked together with a university, took data about the earth's magnetic field and turned it into sound.

I didn't pay much attention in geography class to understand, to know exactly what the earth's magnetic field is. I guess it's also that thing that makes the magnets move. I know, because I read it in an article, it is something that also protects us from getting roasted by the sun's rays, and this magnetic field is an invisible thing. If you take two magnets side by side, it's not like you see the flares coming out of the magnet with the positive sign to stick to the one with the negative sign.
However, they are forces that undoubtedly exist. Think also of electricity, we do not see it, however it exists.

I do not know how, anyway, they were able to transform the data measuring Earth's magnetism to make it visible and to make it listenable. What came out of it is an aural document, indeed, incredibly disturbing and interesting. Then I found out that it was presented to the Danish public in this square in Copenhagen with an installation that lasted for a week, where they literally had noise coming out of the ground, this WOWOWOWOW, I'll put the link to it so you can listen to it because it's really very nice, and apparently the noise tracked the way the earth's magnetism has changed over the last 100,000 years.

Again, I am not a scientist, what has fascinated me and I am sure will fascinate you as well is the incredibly medieval noise that Earth's magnetism makes when it is transformed into sound.

Viva l'arancione!

    TRANSLATION

Looking at old photographs of my city, Cagliari, one of the things that is striking, besides seeing cars parked and stationed in places now (thankfully) unthinkable, is the variety of colors of the cars.

I remember when I was growing up, it was full of cars of every possible color imaginable: red, green, yellow, orange, pea green, no pea green no, pistachio green and the ever-present green Prinz, which was a car that was said to bring bad luck, in fact when you saw a Prinz, especially green, boom, you would touch the person next to it and say "yours, the Prinz, no return," meaning the person could not return you the bad luck.

Then it happened I don't know what and suddenly all the cars in Cagliari, but let's say a little bit everywhere, became uniform and became of three colors: white, black and gray, with gray, especially metallic gray, representing the vast majority of car colors.

In fact you will all know the feeling: you can't remember where you parked your car and search futilely with your eyes for yours, which is surely metallic gray, in a sea of other metallic gray cars.
However, now the situation changes, at least for people who will buy a Fiat. Why? Because Fiat has decided to banish the color gray from its cars, which from now on will only be super-colored, why? Because Italy is the nation of the color and of happiness, and this should also be reflected in the cars, which will all be beautiful, colorful and never gray again.

I'm not kidding, I'll put the link so you can see for yourself with us, with your own eyes. Hurray for the colour orange!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 543 "L'iniquità..." (citando Manzoni)

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

Vabbè, peggio per me.

    TRANSLATION

Alessandro Manzoni, the writer, one of the pillars of Italian literature, has never over excited me. Maybe it's because they shoved it down our throats in school, like when you fatten up geese to make patè, anyway, as I said, never over excited me.

But there is a sentence by Manzoni that I encountered in high school as it was the outline of a paper that they gave us to do in class, and you know when you encounter a sentence and you realise, struck by lightning, that it was really something that I believed in and Manzoni expressed it in such a courtly, if not beautiful way.

The phrase is "iniquity stands on the silence of the oppressed."

I have always had a great sense of justice, even mixing in other people's business very often when I saw things that did not seem right. This is to say that my sense of justice was not a selfish thing, I'm doing my own thing, I'm being wronged and so I'm defending myself, no, when I saw something that I thought was not right I would also intervene on behalf of others. I've always done that and I've always in fact taken so many, not reprimands, but so many rip-offs because you intervene in favor of others, then the others, hey, but who asked you? Whatever, my fault.

No, but I go back to Manzoni's phrase. It is a phrase that has become a little bit my flag, I don't like flags, however you know what I mean. Because when we are wronged, the fact that we don't complain and say anything and passively accept the situation because, I'm shrugging my shoulders, nothing can be done anyway, this makes us guilty, also makes us participants in this injustice we suffer.

That's why when there's something wrong, I'm always the one who goes to annoy people, who goes to say yes, but why do you do that? Even when other people tell me but shut up, but let it go, I never let it go, because I, and it happened to me a lot, sometimes people don't even know that they are making this mistake and because everybody looks at each other and says, whatever, let it go, the thing goes wrong, but who cares, and the thing then is never changed.

Um well now I can't think of any particular examples, I wouldn't even have time to give them in the 20 seconds I have left more or less of these 3 minutes podcast, anyway I will end with an invitation: if you see something that is not right, there, speak up, say something, don't turn your face away, take action, and say what is wrong, and be heard.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I am dumbfounded and amazed because today I read an article that challenged all the things I had been reading for the last ten years, namely that all the practical, manual, menial, lower-paid trades would disappear because they would be swallowed up first by computers and then, since last year, by artificial intelligence.

Eh, I read an article that says exactly the opposite and that is that there are about 30 professions that you feel like you have artificial intelligence, however, they will never disappear.

In first place the butcher, the bricklayer, the tiler, the painter, the plumber, the sportsperson, and the tire dealer. Here, these are trades that will never disappear.

I don't know. As for the tire and tile maker, my guess is they will invent a machine that can do that very difficult chore of putting tiles on faster and more accurately.

I agree with the butcher, maybe there may be machines that cut your animals into pieces, but then once you get there in front of the counter I have my trusted butcher, I go there, he advises me, and we make small talk.

The surprising thing is that the professions that are instead most at risk of being engulfed by artificial intelligence are precisely the technology-related professions that will sooner or later disappear.

Who is telling us these things here? He is not the first clueless, but he is the very creator of GTP chat who as a matter of fact talked about artificial intelligence and what are the trades that will disappear.

Again, this left me very surprised because contrary to all the other things I had read so far, my advice remains the same.

For students who are about to finish high school and perhaps have to make a college choice, the only advice I can give is do something you enjoy, because if you do something you enjoy you will put all your passion into it, you will be even better at it than others, and you will still have fun doing it.

Because if in addition to doing a job that is in danger of disappearing, so you are there with the paranoia, oh my goodness, my job will be gone in five years, if you also add to that the fact that maybe the job kind of sucks for you, you don't really like it, then things get very bad because you are condemning yourself to an existence of mental misery, let's say, and of disaffection, because then you will be so sick about it.

So masons, butchers, pipefitters, tilers, the future is yours, in defiance of artificial intelligence, which may be smart but of little practical application.

Ma l'intelligenza artificiale sogna? E soprattutto, cosa sogna? Sogna forse pecore elettriche?

    TRANSLATION

But does artificial intelligence dream? More importantly, what do they dream about? Do they dream of electric sheep? Yes, I'm paraphrasing the book written in 1968 by Philip Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the title may not mean much to you, it was translated into Italian as The Android Hunter, a literal translation would be, precisely, 'but do androids dream of electric sheep?' and I'm sure, again, this title might not mean much to you, but it is the book on which Blade Runner was based, one of the most beautiful science fiction and philosophy and human relations and 80s stuff ever made, ever seen.

Why am I telling you about Blade Runner, or rather the story behind Blade Runner? That of mistaking computers, indeed androids for human beings. Because I was beaten by a chat box, you know those things, those computer programs that answer questions by pretending to be human beings. That is, it usually specifies 'I'm a chatbot, ask me what you want' when you have to ask questions, what do I know, about your plane ticket, if there issomething wrong with some service, often the first step, if you don't want to put yourself on phone hold for hours, you can often resort to having a chat with a chat box, which, usually, let's say the simplest problems can also solve them, otherwise it usually asks you 'do you want to talk to an operator?'

Here, I was beaten by a game that you can play online, I will put the link, where in 2 minutes you have to figure out whether the interlocutor is a human being or a chat box, a program written for the computer.

The fact that there's only 2 minutes is a little stressful because you enter the site, there's a window tells you "do you want to choose a topic or do I give a question?" if you choose the topic you ask the first question, otherwise he or she gives it to you (which is the computer? I don't know, it's an 'it', in Italian there is no neuter gender).

And I chose whatever, you give me th etopic, and he said, "What is your spirit animal?" And I asked it. And it said, "A fox." Then I don't even remember what I asked anymore. I've asked a couple of questions, but it's difficult because you only have 2 minutes and you see the clock ticking and there's the angst of not knowing what to ask.

But the questions, the answers it gave me were witty, I thought it was a human being and no, it was a bot. So bot one Cristina zero. Let's start again. Now I will, I will ask for a rematch.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Giornata faticosa.

    TRANSLATION

Tiring day. I got up very early to go to the beach, in fact by 07:30 we were already at the beach, so then we could leave very early. Because I detest people around me at the seaside, especially those who cling and shout instead of whispering as one should do when lifting one's eyes from the book one takes to the seaside to read.

So I got home fairly early, quick poke at the vegetable shop to buy some fruit and then embarked on a furniture move, change of place of table, computer, microphone, in fact I still don't even know what the sound will be like if I've attached all the wires right, the spectrum of the audio I see on the computer seems smaller than usual, so I have no idea how the voice will come out. But that's okay. Take what comes.

Eh yes, evidently this eagerness of mine to change I don't know where it comes from, however do you know how when you start moving something then? Eh whatever, while I'm at it I also do this, you open a drawer, you start emptying the contents of the drawer where the stuff is that you don't know where to put (that's why you hid it in the drawer) and then you force yourself to make decisions that you keep putting off: this thing here do I keep it, maybe I need it? IDK, I might need it, right? I throw it out, and then I absolutely know that if I throw it out the next day I will need it and it will be the only thing I need.

So yes, I lost most of the morning, I mean not lost, in fact I have a new setup in the room, however, I still couldn't make up for the fact that I would need an extra room. I, when I lived outside of Italy, was used to very big houses, so over the years I have accumulated a lot of stuff, stuff that I also care about because all the things that I accumulate also have their own reason to be, in short it's ok, and so I find myself hiding them somewhere, waiting for the right moment when that one thing there - which is absolutely useless - can make its nice figure in my house, in my apartment, which is much smaller now that I live in Cagliari.

But whatever, I worked up a good sweat, then rinsed my face using St. John's water, which I had the foresight to leave on the balcony yesterday so that it would be illuminated by the moonbeams, I feel much more purified. They even rang my doorbell, now I'm going to see who it is. I'm back. IDK, it was someone who wanted me to open the door of the building because he has to put up the sign for Monday's pest control. But I say, always at our doorbell must they ring? Anyway you take the episode as it is, bell included.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

Ti ricordi i colori? Ti ricordi l'ambientazione?

    TRANSLATION

Dreams are the strangest thing. When you are dreaming them they are vivid, it is as if you are there in the middle, even as soon as you wake up they are so imprinted in our mind that yes, you think they will never be forgotten. However, 10 minutes pass and you already don't remember what you dreamed, maybe there is still the feeling of the dream, however, you don't remember the details anymore.

Good news for you, because now there is a website that reconstructs for us the dreams we describe to it. Of course it's based on artificial intelligence, you can't talk about anything today without putting artificial intelligence in the middle, but this is a nice thing, I tried.

The site is called The Dreamkeeper and I will put the link in the program notes. It is very simple: you enter the site and there is a space where you can describe the dream, you start writing, if you only write a few sentences, the site itself asks you, but do you remember more details? Do you remember the colors? Do you remember the setting? Then you send, there is a processing time where you create the video of your dream, the animation, because the ones I tried were never with real people, but they were animated, and while you wait, then another nice thing, the site tells you little things that have to do with dreams.

I don't know where it gets these facts, however, some of them corresponded to the things I already knew about dreams. I'll tell you just a couple that I took note of while waiting for it to create my dream.

So, even when we sleep, our brain is always listening. That's what makes sense, because it happened to me too, it happened to everybody, you're dreaming and at some point in the dream a noise comes into the dream, which is the noise coming from the window, only our brain, to protect us, to keep us asleep, puts it in in the plot of our dream.

Another thing I read is that if we eat spicy we will have more vivid dreams. Then, going on, we dream when our brain is in REM phase, which means rapid eye movements, and this happens every 90 minutes.

Then another thing I didn't know is that dolphins and whales are the only mammals that don't dream. I feel sorry for them.

Anyway, go take a look at this site because it's fun, among other things you can also see the dreams that others have. If you have half an hour to waste, don't know how to waste half an hour of your life on the internet, here, I have given you yet another reason to procrastinate and not do the things you should be doing instead.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Cominciamo sparando qualche cifra. Giusto?

No, Sbagliato.

Quindi, pensiamoci.

    TRANSLATION
Let's start by throwing some figures. 63% of the world's population has access to the Internet. We are talking about more or less 5 billion people. And so almost 5 billion people live in a lot of different places and speak different languages, and consequently there should be a lot of different languages on the Internet as well. Right?

No, Wrong. In fact, more than half of all sites posted on the Internet, those that can be accessed publicly without a password, are written in English, and English is the language that overrides all conversations, even among people who do not speak English at home, those nations where English is not the language spoken.

In fact just 5 percent of the world's population has English as their native, first language, however, I repeat, more than half of all things said on the Internet are said on sites that function in English.

This is a problem, not only because it is a further demonstration of the cultural, commercial, everything hegemony of the English-speaking countries, let me remind you that Italy -and we forget it too often - that having lost World War II we are still a nation more or less occupied by the American allies who impose a lot of things: from national policy to the scattering of bases to do war games and various experiments.

But that's not what I want to talk about today, I wanted to talk about the consequences of being forced, being forced to use a language other than the one you know well, so your native language, to communicate, especially to do business. And I notice that every time I have to translate something inherently Italian into English, it's a problem. These days I am communicating with the U.S. about a payment they have to make to me, and ask me how complex it is to get the Italian tax system to agree with the U.S. tax system, even the simple translation of terms like 'partita IVA' or 'codice fiscale', go and explain the difference between 'partita IVA' and 'codice fiscale', right?

The problem is that in the future more and more the number of languages used on the Internet will be limited, and this will bring serious consequences for people who are not native English speakers. So, let's think about it.
