    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

For many people Yoko Ono is just the one who broke up the Beatles. But Yoko Ono already long before she met John Lennon was a multifaceted artist, already established and also well-known. Not only that, another fact that few people know is that John Lennon was probably Yoko Ono's third husband and that she had married an experimental music composer at a very young age, against her parents' wishes, and then married a film producer.

But I don't want to tell you about Yoko Ono's private life, which may be her own business, I want to tell you about Grapefruit, a little book she published in 1964 and which is perhaps the best known of her publications in the world of people who are interested in art.

It's a tiny little book, tiny little, fits in one hand, square in size, super cute, with a yellow, indeed, grapefruit-like cover. It is a book that in the title says, instruction book and drawings by Yoko Ono. It was first published in a limited edition with 500 copies, in 1964, then since then it has been republished several times and I a few days ago managed to find a copy without having to order it through the internet.

It's a very cute book, with little, little on each page a little story, no, it's not a story, little instructions, little hints divided by themes. So there is a part devoted to music, painting, events, poetry, objects, films and dance.

Let me give you some examples. I'll take one that is in the chapter on music: 'John Lennon, as a young cloud.' This is the title 'Theatre piece - Scene 1: opens and closes inside John's head. Scene 2: opens and closes inside other people's heads. Scene 3 : opens and close sky. ' Finished. That's it, that's all.

Let me give you another example, again the one in the music chapter. 'Voice piece for soprano. Scream. 1 against the wind, 2 against the wall, 3 against the sky'.

As you see they are little exercises of.. how to describe them, of looseness of brain and body and voice and soul and everything, from these shines through the fact that Yoko Ono began her career as an artist in the neo Dadaist avant-garde movements, so also loss of meaning, other meanings, and then anyway she was very involved in social struggles also together with John Lennon.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 536 Esami

    TRASCRIZIONE [English translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Exams are a bit of a strange thing, because when preparing for an exam the final result only shows that we were good at preparing for the exam, but not necessarily says we are good at that thing we are preparing for.

I give a practical example: if you brilliantly pass an exam in philosophy or psychology does not mean that you are then able to apply the things you have learned to real life, perhaps in the workplace, it just means that you have studied so as to answer correctly the questions asked by the examiner.

When I was at uni, I remember that many of the people with whom I was waiting to be called to do the [always oral] exam they were still there reviewing, stressing. I always had an attitude, actually not relaxed, because you are always anyway nervous before the exam, however, I used to repeat this mantra to myself: if I haven't learned something so far, I will certainly not learn it in these 10 minutes before they call me to do the [oral] exam.

Let's say that, as far as I'm concerned, it worked out brilliantly. Well, I also have to say that I was a nerd, that I studied a lot, but I didn't because I was geeky, but because I was lucky enough to study subjects that I liked, eh, there is little to do, when you study something that you like, of course that there is still a little bit of study fatigue, giving up doing other things, giving up going out, being in books, however, there is also the joy and love and passion for the thing that is being studied.

This is why it is so important for parents to leave their sons and daughters alone, let them choose the subjects they wish to study, because life is already difficult as it is for our boys and girls. The world of work, but who knows what it will be like? Boys and girls will do jobs that don't even exist yet, I always say so, so why force them to spend three years of uni studying subjects that they
don't like? Let them at least choose subjects they like so they can put all passion that then also brings out hidden talents, and you study better, you study with more attention and you also get higher grades on exams, although then, we know, both the exam grade and the degree itself are more or less pieces of paper, which however are crucial because if you don't have them you fall even further behind what you would otherwise be. I want to end on a positive note: exams can also be a important time of growth and are also important to understand what we don't like
    and stop doing that.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

They say that one should never talk in public about money and religion. I want to try to talk about money, because ... I don't know, there is this situation in Italy that is accepted by everybody, including me, because I live and work there, however, it is quite paradoxical.

All the years that I lived abroad, I worked, of course, and I was paid for the work I performed. The pace of payment varies from country to country, but in English speaking countries they usually pay every two weeks, every fortnight, so I was getting my salary at the end of every fortnight. Or, when I was working as a freelancer, sometimes they would give me a part up front, and then they would pay the total amount after I submitted the invoice within the time limit specified by the invoice, and in all the years that I worked abroad I never had anyone fail to pay or pay late. This is the practice.

I knew that the payment methods in Italy are less orderly, less strict, however I never would have imagined that I would find this situation that, and I am laughing about this, but it is a situation that... well fortunately am not in the condition that I have to wait for the money they give me to pay the rent or the mortgages or things like, that however it is a really dramatic situation.

I've done some calculations, between all the work I've done, many also for public entities, I have about a credit of about 7,000€ which is a lot of money, money that IDK, you don't know when they will pay it, invoices have been sent, I even got myself a VAT number, which also is one of those thing, luckily I have a very good accountant, who is a friend and helps me, also because I don't understand the bureaucratic language, I don't understand what all the acronyms mean.

But there's this really strange situation that I, I mean it would make me laugh if it wasn't so complex, so convoluted so... IDK. I don't even know what the solution is, maybe the solution is to stop working for those who don't pay, I'm not saying within the time frame given, but within the year, because here we're talking about delays that last for years.

Again, I don't know, I'll come up with something. In the meantime, however, I am enjoying the fact that whatever, I am in the situation, in the position of being able to choose whom to work with, so I will be more judicious in my choices in the future.

And good luck to all the other freelancers listening.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 534 Viva Rovereto!

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Insomma, viva Rovereto.

It happens to me sometimes to imagine taking a little getaway, a little vacation, mini vacation of a few days, away from everything and everyone, and I always imagine it in this peaceful and tranquil setting, sometimes by the sea, but sometimes I would also like to go to the mountains.

I am not a great lover of the mountains, also because I am a woman of the sea, I really like the beach, however, every now and then I am reminded of these idyllic pictures.

Now I have finally found a place, a little hidden gem, where I can make one of these little escapes to the mountains, and the opportunity was given to me by a visit I made to my son, who is now studying at the university in Rovereto, at the University of Trento, however from the Rovereto branch.

Never in my life would I have gone to Rovereto also because I knew the name of the town, a small town, however, nothing had attracted me to go there. But instead I then went there, spent a few days there, and it was a real revelation.

First of all because there is the MART Museum, which is very nice, of modern art, by the way there was a very nice exhibition on Klimt when I went to see it, but let's say everything, from the beginning, from when I booked my stay, I found this little gem, this place climbed on a mountain just just barely out of the town, it's 10 minutes walk because Rovereto is very small, you go up this hill and you can see the whole valley, all the mountains, for me, I repeat woman of the sea, a breathtaking view, I felt like Heidi chasing her little goats, and then I was lucky enough to find this very kind lady, Mrs. Luisa who runs a small little guesthouse called Dolce dormire, and it's situated there in a spectacular location, with this room that gave me this little independent garden, my own private.
No, I mean, it was a very, very positive experience, also from the organizational point of view, because as soon as I made the reservation for this room, Mrs. Luisa sent me, told me that there is this app, Trentino guest card, dedicated obviously to people who are visiting Trentino, and this app gives a lot of concessions, including free admission to all the museums that there are in Rovereto, and there are a lot of them, it's a small town however there are a lot of museums, and especially I was fascinated by the Depero House of Futurist Art which is an incredible bath of futurism. In short, hurray for Rovereto!

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

A few days ago I got a nice revenge in a French hotel. Yes, I was just staying in France, in different hotels, and in all these hotels in the room there was a television and all the programs were in French, a language that I don't speak, and there was no way to put subtitles in any way.

Then in one of these hotels I was able to hack the television, I was able to change the setting and have all the programs in the original language. Most of them were in French anyway, however, I was lucky enough to happen upon a movie, the movie being Westworld, a beautiful movie from the 1970s with Yul Brynner, which, alright, I had seen again as an adult, but which I had seen for the first time as a child, and I didn't remember it very well so I took advantage of having hacked the French hotel television, and I rewatched the whole Westworld, which had practically just started, and I still remember how it terrified me as a child. I remembered these scenes with Yul Brynner all dressed in black, refusing to die, oh my God, I'm spoilering, but I hope you've all seen this movie before, refusing to die, being shot at, being shot at.

I had completely removed instead the other scenes, in the other worlds, in the Roman world, in the medieval world, I had absolutely removed them and I was really shocked by the image when they take off, so to speak, the mask to the robot who is supposed to be Yul Brynner and you see all the, all the gears, all the microprocessors and as a child that thing had really scared me very much, and then I remembered it much more looming, much longer also the scenes where the robots rebel, anyway mulfuncion, and I had in my mind this very long chase between Yul Brynner and the protagonist.

Anyway I was very pleased to see it again and once again I realised two things: one is that when I was a child Italian television showed some amazing movies that helped me to get a movie culture, and two is that seeing movies again after so many years then oh well, I'm not saying anything new, I'm saying some very obvious things, that it's like rereading a book after many years, especially if the book was read when you were very, very young, seeing a movie again that made a big impression on you as a child, then maybe you find that it's no longer the case.
Instead in this case it was still the case, because it remains a spectacular movie.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 532 Pareidolia (facce negli oggetti)

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I'll bet you whatever you want, if you look around now, no matter where you are, whether you're in your room, on the street, at the station or at the supermarket, I'm 100% sure, if you look around, you will notice an object that looks like a face.

Now I am looking at the lamp that is in the wall, hanging on the wall behind my computer screen, and the two screws holding it down look like eyes and the arm coming out looks like the nose and mouth.

Why does this happen? Why does our brain, which is so smart, so trained to recognize things, get fooled by inanimate shapes that look like faces to us? It's not a mistake, it's something that comes from evolution, because face recognition is so important to us.
In fact, while to recognise an object takes us a little while, I don't remember whether a hundredth or half a hundredth of a second, to recognise a face takes a tenth of that time. This is also why there are often faces in the banknotes, because while it is very difficult for us to recognise the differences between two similar buildings, it is very easy for us to recognise the differences between two faces when we know the face.

Think about when you meet a person you may not have seen for a long time, or even a person you know well, before the person opens the mouth you already know if they are happy, if they are okay, if they are hurting, if they are angry, even before they speak, because our brains are used to deciphering a lot of little signals that are also difficult then to describe, just because of a history of evolution, because faces are important to us.

Now this ability, ability... I don't know, this trick that the brain plays on us, that makes us see faces in clouds, in the wall, in open bags, in the lifted toilet lid, has a name and it's called pareidolia and it's actually something that happens to us, that makes us think immediately... our brain immediately wondering, but is this thing here a face or not? Becausey do we behave differently based on whether it is a face or not, because if it is a face it means it is a human being.

This thing that started as a thing of evolution however also has other aspects, it has ramifications and that is it helps poetry, because there is nothing more beautiful than lying on a meadow, with a beautiful spring or early summer sun, watching the clouds pass overhead and seeing people's faces drawn there.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

My building is very large for being in Cagliari, which is a medium-small city, has eight floors, there are, I think, 47 families, a microcosm, I've already talked about it in one of my previous episode of the raw 3 minutes.

But yesterday two things happened to me in the building, no big deal, it's the little things
I like to watch, the life I like to observe. The first is that as I was going out on the doorstep there was the lady, I don't remember it was the second of the second floor, that an elderly lady who has been being carried around lately in a wheelchair by the Romanian caregiver, a handsome, solid lady who takes the chair wheeled her up and down the stairs leading to the elevator, and the lady on the wheelchair was there waiting for the caregiver to finish talking to another tenant in the building who said, "Ah, but then - I can't remember if it's Thursday or Friday - turns 100 years old.
Ah, how nice!" So we will soon have one, very soon, a centenarian in the building.

This lady, who I often see in the park as well, she's pretty spry, she's doing well for a centenarian, she is doing very well.

The other thing is while I was buying something on the fly at the supermarket that's right in front of it, at home, in front of me at the checkout, I saw a lady who also lives in the building, a very distinguished lady, very nice, always well kept, very well groomed.

As the lady paid the heard the cashier tell her that the amount was 10€ exact. The lady looks inside the bag and realises that she doesn't her purse. It happened to me several times as well, in that case, phew, what a bore having to leave the groceries there, cross the street, go up to the house, get the money, come back down, etc.

So I knew, while I almost never have cash in my purse, but today I knew I had 10€ ,because I had seen them, and since I was right after the lady, I offered her, Ma'am, if you want I'll pay for it, no problem, then we live in the same building, we go up together and you can pay me back.

The lady was a little bit like that, however, then she accepted and thanked me, very nice.
And so, since we were doing the road together, because we live in the same building, I offered to bring up the groceries and then I told her, look I'll wait outside the door, because I didn't want to be intrusive, because I know that a lady of a certain age, but she asked me into the house, and there is this house, which is a beautiful house, full of beautiful furniture.

I mean it was a thing, a fun thing, a good thing. I was glad to have been able to do this lady a favor and to have discovered of having a centenarian in the building.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

My friend Arnold Schwarzenegger today gave me three interesting pieces of advice. Yes, that's right Schwarzenegger, the former Mr. Muscle, no, he was Mr. Universe, yes, Mr. Universe, governor, who later turned out, turned out to be an intelligent man with ideas that were not at all obvious.
People who follow me daily, if there are any, will know that some time ago I subscribed to Arnold Schwarzenegger's newsletter. A little bit so as a joke, because I imagined he was sending information on how to do push-ups, how to do abs, instead of course it's a completely different thing, even interesting.

And let's say that now, every day, when it appears in my list of emails received, the one from Arnold Schwarzenegger, it always makes me smile, because I like Arnold to write to me.
In one of the last newsletters, the one from yesterday, there is some information that I took the trouble to read, because usually I open it, go up, scroll very very quickly, then trash it, but today I took the trouble to read.

It gives some information let's say interesting, some quite obvious, and that is things I already knew however I want to share with you these pearls of wisdom from Arnold who takes very much to heart my health and my physical state, mens sana in corpore sano, and in short, now I tell you.

So, first of all, he told me that dopamine is very important for physical and psychological well-being and that you can have a rush of dopamine by doing artistic activities, that you don't have to be a genius, you don't have to be a great artist, but also simply paint and do things with your hands, and today there is no shortage of inspiration, just go to any YouTube or Instagram channel and there are people there explaining how to do everything and more.

Another thing, to me actually much more interesting, is that of 'sleep debt.' You know, when we sleep little and we say, whatever, I catch up on the weekend. Apparently research shows that to recover even one hour of 'sleep debt' it takes at least four days in a row that you must sleep 7 to 9 hours.

I can't remember when is the last time I slept 9 hours, anyway sleep debt is a night when you sleep less than 6 hours, and of this one instead I had several, so apparently I am in super sleep debt. It's too bad that when I'm there under the blankets, or on top of the blankets now that it's hot, I can't sleep because all the thoughts that come to my mind.
I will now try to follow my friend Arnold's advice.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

There is a particular time that for me it means, it has always meant to arrive home, and I refer especially to the period, long long period when I lived abroad, however during all this period, especially after the birth of my son, I did everything to be able to return home, to Italy, to Cagliari, at least once a year, and often, in the many years that I lived in Australia, it happened that I came back when here in Cagliari it was summer, in July or even in September, and there in Australia, in Melbourne it is the middle of winter.

And there's this moment that always made me feel, here, now I'm home. It's not when I arrived at the airport in Rome or Milan, but when the door of the plane just landed at the airport in Cagliari, and inside entered this... going down the steps to exit the plane, I was enveloped by this wave of warm air full of saltiness, because Cagliari airport is practically attached to one of the many ponds surrounding the city, in fact, for a person who has never landed in Cagliari there is a moment of panic because it seems like the plane wants to land on water.

So the hatch opens and there you are, on the stairs, at the top of the stairs, you get out and you're enveloped by this wave of warm, beautiful air, full of the smell of saltiness, full of all the things, and then there's all around a lot of Mediterranean vegetation, so the myrtle, the mastic tree, I don't know what all is planted around the runway of Cagliari airport, however for me that was always the moment when, ah! that's it, now I've arrived home, and this thing, this beautiful feeling continues even though I've been living here permanently again for quite a while now.

But every time I happen to take the plane and come back, especially in this beautiful season, now we're not in the middle of summer yet, we're at the beginning of June, however there's always that beautiful moment that the door opens, you're there, tired after the trip, no matter how long the flight was, because anyway in travel the flight is never as long as ... the trip, it's never as long as the flight, but it always starts first with packing, moving around etc. And there is this beautiful moment that I like and for me it will forever remain this feeling of welcome, of being back home and being in a place where you want to be, where you feel good and where there is this beautiful, sweet and wonderful air. Oh, Sardinia is beautiful.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Poi possono succedere tante cose. Anzitutto puoi perdere il cellulare. Capita.

    TRANSLATION

When I was a young girl and I was walking around at night, one of the pieces of advice that we used to give each other, also the advice that you used to read in the newspapers, when you are a woman alone, on the street at night, was to take the key in your hand and hold it with the pointed end outward and to hold it in your hand as you approached the house before you opened the door, because in case this you could use it as a weapon if someone attacked you.

Here's tough times for women coming back alone today, with the cars they're producing, because the keys don't exist anymore, it's one of the most obnoxious things about modern cars that I've had a chance to see, this thing they've come up with that you open the car through a cell phone app.
I don't even know where to begin to say why this is a bad thing, because first of all it always forces you to go out with your cell phone, then it has to have battery, so you have to carry around cables, various cords, then I still haven't found out if this thing here of opening the car with tthe cell phone app works even when you don't have internet, you don't have cell service.

Then many things can happen. First, you can lose your cell phone. It happens. Then, as I said, your battery can run out, but also your glass can break and you can't manage the app anymore or anything can happen.

It seems to me to be an absolutely moronic thing, who came up with it. It's one of these things then that are obsolete before they were even created, because the key is also an object that you can hold in your hand, that you can keep in your pocket that works mechanically regardless of situations, regardless of weather conditions.

This, however, is kind of the trend that it is taking, that is, those who make cars are getting a bit carried away with the things that are possible and simply by the fact that they are possible, they make them as well.

I know that no one, no car manufacturer is going to listen to my 3 minutes raw, but really , I hope that consumers and consumers show their preferences, maybe when they go to get a car they say yes, whatever, I want the car though that gives me the ability to have the key, to have the key , physical, that I can hold in my hand. I want the key, give me the key.
