Aiuto!

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Everywhere you turn, you find stories of mystery, actually horror. We are at the end of October, and somehow Italy has also embraced the commercial opportunities offered by Halloween, this holiday that has come back to us, to us in the Mediterranean, passing, as it often does, first, through the United States and coming back here on the rebound as something invented by them, while in all Mediterranean traditions there are in any case at the end of summer, in the middle of autumn, holidays, festivities that speak of rebirth after death, so when the fields come back to life through planting.

In the midst of all these horror stories, which I naturally guard against reading and listening to because, I've said it many times, scary movies are scary to me, not when I watch them, but after they come back to my mind, so all the scary things, however, I indulged in reading a scientific article and, you will say, okay well, the scientific article and quiet, there is nothing scary about it. And I found myself reading a real horror movie instead.

So, I'm not afraid of many things, I mean I don't give a damn about mice, spiders, or snakes, and of course, I don't hug them or kiss them however if I see a snake or a spider or a mouse, they leave me quite indifferent unless they come at me, however I don't give a damn. This is not the case for cockroaches, however.

I have an atavistic terror, in the sense that I can't even stay in the same room, so I just run away, I really run away, it's a phobia. And I found myself reading this article that talks about a NASA experiment that had reproduced, no, not NASA, I think it's a Russian experiment because the Russian name, they had these cockroaches reproduce in space and these gave birth to 33 other cockroaches once they came down, came back here to earth, they showed some genetic changes, they were bigger faster, different from their sisters born normally on earth.
I imagined this horror movie. Imagine that all these cockroaches brought into space somehow disappear and reproduce forever, and we are then overwhelmed by cockroaches coming from space.

Here, this to me is the most terrible horror movie I can imagine. Now I'm going to go and calm down, because I already know I won't sleep tonight.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

71% e 153.1824 file trovati, mancano 3 ore e 45, anzi 3 ore 31 e 42, anzi 4 ore 7 minuti...

    E aspettiamo.

    TRANSLATION

71% and 153,1824 files found, 3 hours 45 to go, or rather 3 hours 31 and 42 to go, or rather 4 hours 7 minutes to go... I mean it's constantly changing the time that still remains because it's based on the speed of the moment of the internet stream coming into my computer.

What am I talking about? I am describing the screenshot of this program that I use for the computer to recover files that I deleted.

Now, the fact already that I have a specific program for recovering deleted files gives you an idea of how often this happens to me. In fact, I have had this program for more than a decade and it has saved me more than once from terrible crises. Because it is true that I always make copies of things, however, I make them periodically, like once a month, every three weeks, so there is this period of time that remains uncovered.

Now, among the many times that I have deleted files of documents, through my own fault because, I always say this, I understand enough about computers to be able to put my hands where I shouldn't, you know, sometimes I delete operating system files that the computer needs to run, usually to get to those files isn't easy, it's not like you find them there, they're hidden just to prevent people from deleting them by accident or unintentionally.

This time, however, it was not my fault. I was opening a series of folders to change the icon, because I like to have particular icons for each project that I do, to have its precise icon, and I had them open and while I was waiting for them to open at the same time I was emptying the trash can of the desktop, of my computer and, I swear, I don't know what happened, evidently something happened, because not only did I delete those folders, about ten that I wanted to open to change the icon, but it deleted my whole folder where I kept all the copies of the 3 minutes podcast second season, so let's say a couple of hundred documents.

Oh gosh, it's not a big deal because anyway they are on the server where the 3 minutes podcast is published however, I mean, I want my documents and now there is the program running to retrieve them.
    And we wait.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 665 Mani

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

This morning I did a beautiful thing, I managed to catch up with a dear friend whom I hadn't seen for a long time, we had been chasing each other for months texting each other, trying to find a time that suited both of us, and then this morning finally at 09:30 we met in the park near home.

It was a day, still, it's a bit of an uncertain day, so much so that I at one point had to go back home to get a jacket because it was threatening to rain, then, of course, it didn't rain just then, hot as hell, anyway we got to this cafe that's inside the Monte Claro park and we sat down to chat, to tell each other the things that have happened in our lives since we last saw each other, which was a while ago.

This little cafe is really, let's say, a little shack that's there in the park with some umbrellas, some plastic chairs and that's it, we got ourselves something to drink. Serving us was this lady, a lady also quite young, very quick-witted, very dynamic, very nice, because we were the only two people sitting there, and also because after a while came down a downpour of water that lasted 5 minutes very strong so we kind of made ourselves tiny little under the umbrella that protected us, anyway we started making small talk with this lady, then when it was time, after a couple of hours of beautiful talk, to leave, we approached to pay and this lady, well, I don't know, she shared some thoughts with us, one of them was that she had nail polish, yellow nail polish, which from a distance was also very beautiful, then she told us, ah look, it's not perfectly applied, my daughter put it on, she told us about this beautiful relationship she has with her ten-year-old daughter, that they cuddle with each other, they put makeup on they do these things here.

And then this lady, again quite young, said something that impressed me a lot, she said, ah you know, I don't like to put nail polish on because I don't like my hands, at which point she took off her glasses, she had her prescription glasses on, and a little bit also she was moved saying that she has this thing on her hands, she has arthritis-I always get confused between arthritis and arthrosis, one of the two anyway-and her hands were very normal, I saw them, they were normal hands.

It made me think about the fact that I have that thing on my hands as well, in fact, I even have to have surgery because by now the finger if it bends, and I can't pull it up anymore, I have to pull it up with the other hand, however, I have never experienced it in such an embarrassing way, that I am embarrassed by my hands, I mean, it is what it is.

And it made me think though that even my mom, this thing here is genetic, that she has deformed hands, bones like this, that she often keeps her hands in her pockets, or is a little bit ashamed of her hands as if there is anything to be ashamed of.
It affected me, it touched me, yes, it touched me.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 664 I pantaloni di Cicerone
"Non è colpa sua! Indossava i pantaloni!"

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Hey you, person who is listening to me, look at your legs and tell me if I am not right: you are wearing pants.

Yes, because the vast majority of people in the Western world wear pants, no matter what gender they identify with. And even if you take one of those official photos that they show when the heads of state (99 percent are all male), they all have pants on, pants that are also very similar to each other, unless they are heads of state that belong to Bermuda, where the official dress code is precisely to wear the name of the state, Bermuda.

Why am I telling you about bermudas, about pants more generally ? Because I read a thought-provoking article that goes all the way back to the time of the ancient Romans.
So if I tell you imagine ancient Roman males, you imagine men in togas. Now, it's not that in ancient Rome everyone went around in a toga, the toga was the attire for great occasions, however, they usually wore the tunic, which is a short dress above the knee, so no one wore pants. Not only that, pants were looked down upon very much because it was the clothing used by the barbarians and of course, the barbarians, the Germanic tribes, were looked down upon by imperial Rome, it was considered a savage use.

So much so that there are documents that show how Cicero, that skilled orator that he was, defended one of his clients one day by using his pants as evidence that his client was a person who had an impetuous character and an aggressive character, in fact, he says look at him it's not his fault that he did what he did, it's because he so aggressive, in fact, he even wears pants, thus the defence of pants.

The Romans knew pants and I repeat, they did not like them because they were considered something for barbarians, for savages. Even there is this writing by Tacitus that made me laugh because it reminds a little bit of Rousseau with the good savage, this time the good savage is the Germanic tribe and he mentions the Germanics as people still very close to nature, who in fact had these strange customs like bathing in the river, instead you will remember that in Rome there were public baths, which still many contemporary cities dream of, so among these mentioned customs and habits of the Germanic people so wild, so close to nature precisely, there is bathing in the river, having a ponytail and even wearing pants.
Anyway, since the imperial Romans water under the bridge has come a long way, times have changed, and now the vast majority of people in the Western world use pants.

TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation & link below]

    TRANSLATION

If we take statistics, real, serious statistics, made by entities we trust, you see, despite that, statistics can say whatever they want, even if the numbers are accurate because it is always a question of how they are interpreted.

This is made even more serious when one considers that correlation is often confused with causation when it comes to statistics. What are these two things? The example that is always given is: in summer the sale of ice cream increases, in summer the number of people who get sunburned from being in the sun too much also increases, so we see that there is in the summer a dramatic increase in the sale, consumption of ice cream and a dramatic increase in skin burns. But buying ice cream has absolutely nothing to do with sunburn, it is not that we sunburn because we buy ice cream, it is that these two events, by chance, occur together, or at the same time.

So this is a mistake that is made very often. And now I've discovered a site where this error, not only is amplified, but it's used for effects I think very amusing, that is, you compare percentages that have the same trend, so they have more or less the same increase at the same time however of things that have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
Let me give you a few examples then: the first is the number of people drowning because they fell into a pool correlated with the movies with Nicolas Cage, these are percentages from 1999 until 2009, in 2007 there were 4 Nicolas Cage movies and 123 people drowned in the pool, in 2003 this ratio dropped a lot because only one Nicolas Cage movie and 85 people drowned in the pool.

Another figure that made me laugh is the divorce rates in Maine and the per capita use of margarine, this also has an absolutely constant trend, it is tracked from 2000 to 2009; then I can offer you the age of Miss America correlated with people being murdered using steam, hot steam or hot objects: again the trend is almost identical.

I mean, these are very amusing examples that I wanted to give you though, maybe to entice you, the next time you read things put together in a newspaper, to ask yourself: but are they really things that have something to do with the other or are they simply things that, by chance, occurred at the same time?

Anyway, I will put the link to the site in the program notes.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 662 Poltergeist tecnologici

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    Almeno spero.

    TRANSLATION

In the 1990s, I remember buying a book at a flea market, the book called 'When technology bytes back,' which we can translate as 'when technology turns against you'. Now, it's been a long time since I bought it and read it, but I remember it was quite esoteric because it told of events that we have all experienced firsthand when it seems that literally technology turns against you: the television doesn't work, the computer is a problem, and everything at the same time seems to have decided to get together to make your life difficult, through technology, however, this book I remember talked about it a little bit almost like the poltergeist, as if technology and objects had a life of their own and were possessed by the demon of mischievous technology.

Now, I know that's not the case, however, there are days, and this morning was one of them when I really feel like there is the demon of technology turning my cards over, turning my omelettes around, unplugging my wires without me knowing it and all the technological things around me living a life of their own. Well, more than technological things I'm talking about computer programs and app systems that don't work.

I had to communicate with an office in Australia this morning, and this morning because of the time difference, the office was going to close at 8:00 a.m. Italian time, so I had to be prepared, I got up very early, and I realised that I had no money in my Skype account, which I use to call the number (because you had to call a phone number) so the whole rigmarole of putting credit on Skype started, and of course every time you open an app that you haven't opened in a few months the first thing it asks you is to update it. And then, whatever, now I'm not going to tell you the whole chain, but every step I was taking there were three other steps that I had to take in order to take that one step, and each of those three steps had in turn three other steps that I had to take in order to proceed.

In short, a kind of triplicate chain letter (which then why is it called a chain letter ? I don't know I will investigate). However, the technology I managed to tame it, the poltergeists went back where they came from and I came out on top.

    At least I hope so.

Pensateci, riflettete. Non è così male pensarci.

    TRANSLATION

Today I want to launch into a philosophical argument, without of course having prepared beforehand as it must be in my 3 minutes which are, let us remember, raw.
My philosophical thinking is that the world is divided into two categories: those who open a lot of windows on the computer, in the browser, and then when they have to shut it down they click the shut down all button without closing the windows, and those who instead meticulously open only one window at a time and when they have to shut down the computer they first disable all the programs, one at a time, close all the windows and then mash the button.

I, needless to say, belong to the first category of people. Not only do I open 20,000 windows in my browser at the same time, but I demand that all of them run very fast, and then I also open other programs, not only the browser, I also open the mail program, the one to record, then I always come up with the idea to clean the computer, with a program that I have to open separately, while the computer is doing a lot of other things, and of course the first thing that the program to clean the computer tells me is 'to clean the computer we have to close all the other programs that you have open' and I, of course, had opened the program to clean the computer simply because I was there bored, waiting for all the windows, all the programs that I had open, to do their duty.

Here, I am one of those people who always opens everything, whenever there is something to click, I click it, I don't think too much before doing things on the computer and in fact, I often find myself in awkward situations.

Not only that, but I understand enough about computers, the operating system and various tricks, I understand enough to be able to put my hands there where I shouldn't, inside the innermost and deepest inner sanctum of the operating system is yes, and then I end up doing damage.

It happened several times that I deleted everything that I needed, that I lost things, that I downloaded programs and I was too lazy then to sift, to see if there were viruses and I ended up with, not so many viruses, but things that slowed down my computer so much because there were those are called Trojan horses that didn't steal anything from me, because fortunately I'm very careful with the important things, but whatever, even if they slow down your computer that's a big problem.

So which category of people do you belong to? Think about it, reflect on it. It is not so bad to think about it.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 660 Cosa fa paura?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

What is it that makes a scary story such a scary story? Halloween is approaching and everywhere here and there you hear tales that want to scare, stuff on TV, and even the various private channels like Netflix are offering things that are supposed to be scary.

But if we think about it, what are the elements that cause what we normally call fear? I honestly don't know. There is definitely the element of surprise, when something, someone or something comes out from around a corner, there is the somewhat horrifying element, when there are scenes with blood, and there is suspense, when we don't know what is going to happen to the main character, then, what else is there? Let me think.

There is fear when we already know what is going to happen and we see the protagonist going towards his fate unaware, that is also something that... In fact, maybe these ones are the situations that I find the scariest, when there is the protagonist we already know what is going to happen however he does not know it he goes almost blindly.

I like scary movies, but I can't watch them because then they come back to me, I don't want them to come back to me because I embroider on them, I do all my own, yes, I get into them.
I don't know, actually, because I don't like scary movies. I remember going to see The Shining when it came out in theatres, and I went with my high school classmate, Sandro, and we went to the harbour cinema, at that time there was still the cinema under the arcades in Via Roma in Cagliari, and after seeing The Shining we went around the dark and deserted streets, it was winter, being afraid.

It's been ages since I went to the movies to see scary movies. Maybe I should resume, though. For example, I'd like to see The Blair Witch Project again, which is a movie where you can't see anything, just the fact that you don't, here, maybe this is the last scary movie I've seen in the theatre, the fact that you can't see anything is the scariest thing.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

3 minuti passano in fretta.

    TRANSLATION

I am the one who always says that it doesn't matter to have big equipment, big infrastructures, because if you have a good idea, the idea works even with a minimum of technology. Today I'm experimenting with the minimal technology of recording my 3 minutes with an app that I downloaded on my mobile because soon, at the beginning of November, I'm going on vacation and so I'll be on the move, I won't have my computer, I won't be carrying my headphones and stuff, and now I'm trying to see how it works to record the 3 minutes just using my mobile, trying to do better than the last time I was abroad, in France, this June, which was quite complicated because if I recorded on the mobile then I couldn't move the file from the mobile to the laptop because I didn't have internet, or anyway I didn't have internet that I could use on the laptop.

These are all technical things about which you surely don't care to know more than that, however, this is also the soul of this 3 minutes that... it's like that, you are with me, you travel with me the road that I travel, sometimes I talk to you about things I have read, sometimes I talk to you about things I have seen, sometimes about things I have experienced, sometimes I take you inside my everyday life, like now that I am experimenting, I have my phone in my hand, my mobile in my hand and I keep an eye on the minute marker because you know that the characteristic of the 3 minutes (doh !) the title says it: it is 3 minutes and they are raw, raw not in the sense that they are bad but in the sense that I don't edit them, I don't shorten them, I don't lengthen them, I leave them as they come, but I have to be very good at interrupting myself at exactly 3 minutes. Oh well, sometimes it's 2 minutes 58, sometimes it's 2 minutes 59, however I rarely, practically never, go over the 3-minute mark.

I think 3 minutes is a fair length because it's long enough to talk about something, but it's short enough so that if you don't know whether you like to listen or not you don't waste too much time. 3 minutes go by quickly. But if you have a lot of time to spend and don't know what to do I have almost two years now of 3-minute catalog, you can spend more than a day, certainly more than 24 hours. I'll throw it out there, for long plane rides, don't know what to do? Get into my 3 minutes that time goes by and you don't even notice, you will arrive super early and rested and super informed and relaxed at your destination.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 658 Dispositiva?

    TRANSLATION [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

The truth is that I would like to be a permissive, detached mother who lets her child have the freedom to make the choices he wants, and so I show up however there are some things that cause me problems.

So, my son is enrolled at the University of Trent, where he is studying communication interfaces and technologies, which is a fantastic course of study, and that's the problem, because it is a course of study that contains a lot of subjects that I not only know very well, but that have been part of my work for many, many decades. So, what do I know, when my son calls me all excited and says "Ah, Mom, you know the movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang?" And I get the urge because I not only Fritz Lang and Metropolis, but, when I was studying in university, I had a film history exam with a monograph course on the cinema of German expressionism with the bible, Sigfried Kracauer, in short, I know the subject very well, also because then, having lived in Germany, I went on a binge of films from that period whenever I could, that there was a retrospective.

Or when he asks me if I know Newromancer, William Gibson's 1984 book that created let's say, I don't say hyperspace, however a certain kind of image of the future. It is a book that I read when it came out, and I have also read many other books by William Gibson.

That's it, so I constantly find myself having to restrain myself because I don't want to overwhelm him with my things, I don't want to become paragons for what he does, but for crying out loud, it's terribly difficult, also because it's subjects that I know very well, and I live with it on a daily basis, always looking for new things, new materials on the web, I also have at home a lot of books that talk about these subjects, so it's very difficult for me to bite my tongue and avoid telling him, look there's this, this and this and this, because it's only fair that he discovers his own things, and when I really can't resist, I give him advice, then like today, I tell him look, if you want to tell me to leave you alone, do it, no problem, because you have every right to do so and also always feel free not to follow my advice and even if I get angry it's my thing, it's my problem, it's not your problem, follow what you think is right.

I mean, I'm trying not to be too dispositive. I don't know if I can, however, I am trying.
