"Life in the Flesh" or another way to put it, "the World without God," has desires contrary to the Spirit, the Holy Spirit. This life of sin and death runs deep within man. Original sin forms in us along with our body and soul and a conflict ensues. The body/flesh easily gets the upper hand. Our desires are impure (Romans 1:28-32). Our action confirms this in the evil man does to man. The man who lives "according to the flesh" is the man disposed only to that which comes "From the World": he is the man of the "senses" only, the man of the three-fold concupiscence.

Only the power of Christ himself working in man's innermost being through the Holy Spirit can free us from this bondage.  (Romans 8:5-11).
