Heaven’s Gate was an American religious cult, founded in 1974 by Marshall Applewhite (“Do”) and Bonnie Nettles (“Ti”), most infamous for a 1997 mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California. The group believed their physical bodies were only “vehicles” for the soul and taught that they would ascend to a “Next Level” of existence, leaving Earth behind to board a spaceship allegedly trailing the Hale–Bopp comet as it passed closest to Earth.
