Malcolm Lakatani is an incredibly versatile performer, recording artist, teacher, vocalist and multi instrumentalist.  He has played with some of NZ’s top artists including Che Fu and Te Vaka.  A proud Niuean, Mal is an inspiring skilled music educator and launched Creative Souls Academy where he teaches and mentors young musicians in Auckland.

This morning on Pacific Breakfast, we continue our Talanoa Ako series from the Ministry of education, to help our Pasifika families to champion our children's education. This morning we look at NCEA.

A voice and heart for his nation, Aaron Pau shares the voice from his bloodline of being proud Pukapukan also honoring his Aitutakian roots. Sharing the significance of ANZAC DAY and how it plays a huge part of the man he is today. 

Aaron is a currently the chief combat systems specialist for the Royal NZ Navy serving and carrying his nation & wenua on his shoulders. 25 years in the military have sparked great opportunity for Aaron to share his gifts to the world work alongside our Pacific Islands , Middle East , South East Asia and more as well as serving here in Aotearoa. Aaron expresses the importance of freedom and why we shouldn't take it lightly but grateful of the land we stand on. 

"Sometimes we take for granted the freedom we have today which actually came at a massive cost for our nation" 

Anzac Day commemorates New Zealanders but also our Pacific Island nations that went to war, some returned many were killed Pukapukan during World War One and Two. 

Aaron wants to inspire our community to grow and shares the voice of our pacific people & New Zealanders to continue to share our historical stories, to Honour those that have gone before us, and it is our role today to maintain their legacy we carry the hopes of the nation.

Young, gifted and talented Pareura Junior Katoa, who is a current sergeant in the New Zealand Army speaks about, his experience working in the force but also highlighting the significance of ANZAC DAY while carrying his Pukapukan roots. 

Pareura also known as PJ has been part of the New Zealand Army for more than 11 years, and has travelled around the world leading and sharing his achievements. A passion for serving and the next generation to strive and always looking to grow.

Anzac Day commemorates New Zealanders killed in war and honours returned and serving servicemen and women. Thousands lost their lives during World War 1 & 2, PJ is part of the voice that encourages his pacific people & New Zealanders to continue to share our historical stories to the world.  

PJ finally acknowledges his family, community and roots for supporting him throughout his journey, but also showing love & acknowledging his cousin Daniel Kairua who passed away while serving in the army. He hopes to inspire more youth and community to do their best in what they are passionate about.

The Pacific Island News Association otherwise known as PINA is the Pacific regional media association established to promote media freedom, training and development as well as cooperation amongst Pacific Island media organisations.  PACNEWS is a regional news agency headquartered in Suva, Fiji and an operated service of PINA.

A campaign to tackle increased family violence in New Zealand’s Pacific communities during Covid-19 will launch today.  The Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu, initiative led by The Cause Collective, will see 1200 family violence workers and community advocates mobilised throughout the country to help Pacific communities prevent violence. 

Fa’amatuainu Tino Pereira is the Cultural Lead for Nga Vaka o kaiga Tapu.

Fa’amatuainu is a prominent and experienced Pacific consultant on public sector issues and a leading conference facilitator. He is Managing Director of Niu Vision Group, a specialist consultancy firm based in Wellington, and an experienced governance practitioner with membership on many government Boards, Committees and NGOs.

Fa’amatuainu is a key advisor to many government departments. For more than 15 years he was involved in New Zealand’s broadcasting sector as a journalist, broadcaster, and commentator on Pacific issues. He has had significant community involvement for more than three decades including community leadership responsibilities.

Fa’amatuainu is of Samoan descent. He holds the chiefly orator title of Fa’amatuainu from Lufilufi in Samoa

Falefatu Enari is a passionate, experienced educator with more than two decades of teaching, mentoring and coaching experience in the primary and secondary sectors as well as experience in the tertiary sector.

Pacific Advance Senior School (PASS) was established in 2015 as a Partnership / Kura Hourua School.  The first Pasifika for Pasifika senior school in Aotearoa New Zealand.In 2018 PASS transitioned into the first Pasifika for Pasifika secondary school in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

Co-Principal of PASS Falefatu Enari has senior management experience in both mainstream and Māori medium schools, he is a collaborative leader with strengths in the development and empowerment of people. 

Falefatu is a dedicated family man who strives for and encourages advancement within his work, community and personal life.

Ron Viviani brings strong knowledge of the ECE sector and has extensive experience working alongside Pasifika ECE services.

Born in Niue he currently works in Auckland, holds a Masters Degree in Applied Economics from Massey University and currently operates and manages a portfolio of ECE services.

Prior to his current position, Ron has worked in a number of business advisory and consultancy roles, both in the community and corporate sectors. Ron brings strong knowledge of the ECE sector from a business perspective, and has extensive experience in working alongside Pasifika ECE services. Ron is currently involved with a number Pasifika community entities being the Chair of the Pasifika Education Centre and a Trustee of the Pacific Business Trust and the Hakupu Atua Trust Board. He is a former board member Auckland Kindergarten Association (AKA), one of the largest in the country with more than 100 ECE centres and 9000 young children in attendance and Treasurer of the combined session of the Newton PIPC.

Geoff Muliaga Brown tested positive for COVID-19 as part of the Marist College cluster and has been in self isolation but has now been given the all clear to come out of isolation.  Ete follows up to find out how he is doing and what advice he may have for people to get tested especially Pasifika communities.

Nathan Chong Nee is proud of his layered Pacific-identity being of Te Rarawa, Samoan, Chinese and Australian-European descent. After four years being based in Samoa. He has recently returned to Tāmaki Makaurau where has taken on the position of Clinical Manager with Genesis Youth Trust; a service that supports first time and serious repeat offenders.

During his time in Samoa, Nathan was employed as the Principal Child Protection Officer for the local Government. This was followed by two years with the Gaualofa Trust where he worked closely with the Chairman and former Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Tufuga Tupuola Efi.

In 2019 Nathan was involved in the development and drive of youth leadership projects, foremost Talia ole Lumana’i (Protector of the Future). This project sought to connect aspiring young Samoan leaders with indigenous cultural custodians as well as their peers in the environmental and development field. As a momentum-building initiative, their team engaged the ‘Protectors’ in critical talanoa that explored important local and regional challenges.

As an alumnus of the Obama Asia Pacific Leaders and Young Pacific Leaders programmes, Nathan is passionate about inclusive spaces that allow us to gather, innovate and reclaim the tools that we require to drive our own solutions.
