    Lisa Appignanesi on love.
    Lisa Appignanesi is a writer, novelist, and campaigner for free expression. She was Director of Talks and Seminars at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, where she stayed for ten years. While at the ICA she edited the Documents series, which included the books Postmodernism and Ideas from France. After becoming Deputy Director of the ICA in 1986, she created the ICA-Television branch, which produced England’s Henry Moore in 1988 and Seductions for Channel 4. Appignanesi left the ICA in 1990 to write full-time. Memory and Desire and Freud’s Women published in 1991 and 1992, respectively were followed by nine other fiction and two non-fiction books, including the highly acclaimed Mad, Bad, and Sad: A History of Women and the Mind Doctors. It won the 2009 British Medical Association Award for the Public Understanding of Science, amongst other prizes. Her most recent book is All About Love: Anatomy of an Unruly Emotion.

    Mark Cocker is one of Britain’s foremost writers on nature and contributes regularly to The Guardian, Times Literary Supplement, as well as BBC Radio. His is the author of several books including the universally acclaimed Birds Britannica (with Richard Mabey) and Crow Country nominated for the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2008. He has travelled the world in search of wildlife and won a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to study the cultural importance of birds in West Africa. For the last ten years he has been researching a ground-breaking study in natural history and cultural anthropology which was published this summer called Birds and People. It surveys the significance of birds across the world and is illustrated with images from British wildlife photographer David Tipling.

    Tim Birkhead speaks at the Wellcome Collection about bird sense.
    Tim Birkhead is a professor of behaviour and evolution at the University of Sheffield. His research on promiscuity and sperm competition in birds helped to re-shape current understanding of bird mating systems. His undergraduate teaching includes courses in animal behaviour and the history and philosophy of science.
