For Tina Sykes-Mosley, Christmas Eve carries a bittersweet significance. It would have been her son Marcus's 34th birthday, but he was shot to death in 2020, leaving behind a child who will never celebrate another Christmas with him.
Now, Sykes-Mosley is channeling her grief into action, distributing holiday gifts to children who have lost parents or caregivers to gun violence, youngsters for whom the season brings painful reminders rather than joy.

North Carolina House Republicans are demanding extensive records from Charlotte officials about violent crime, diversity initiatives, and immigration enforcement, claiming the city may be prioritizing "ideological initiatives" over public safety.
The House Oversight Committee sent letters on Dec. 19 to Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, City Manager Marcus Jones, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Estella Patterson, and Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) interim CEO Brent Cagle, requesting five years of documents and data, according to records obtained by WCNC Charlotte.

Seven people, including former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, were killed when a plane crashed at the Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday.
Statesville Regional Airport confirmed an "aircraft incident" at approximately 10:15 a.m. Statesville officials confirmed the airport will be closed until further notice while investigators work to determine the cause of the crash and clear the scene.
The families of the victims issued a joint statement, stating that Greg and his wife, Cristina, along with their son Ryder and Greg's daughter Emma, were among the victims. Dennis Dutton, Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth were also killed.

Calls for emergency services have been released in connection with a stabbing on the CATS light rail in northeast Charlotte that left one person hurt earlier this month.
The calls reveal witnesses' perspectives of the situation and the aftermath of the scene. The stabbing happened on Friday, Dec. 5, on the CATS light near North Brevard Street and East 25th Street. Oscar Solorzano is accused of stabbing Kenyon Dobie, causing serious injuries.
The most substantial call came from one witness who told authorities they were assisting Dobie and encouraged him that he was going to live.

An explosion at a home in Salisbury left at least 12 firefighters hurt on Monday.
The situation began on Laurel Street near North Long Street around 4:56 p.m., according to the Salisbury Police Department. Firefighters arrived and found a heavy fire at a home.
As firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, an explosion happened inside the home. The home's roof collapsed after the explosion. The explosion caused injuries to 11 Salisbury firefighters and one from the East Spencer Fire Department, authorities said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred in east Charlotte early Monday morning.
Officers responded to a shooting on North Sharon Amity Road, near the intersection with Lynnville Avenue, around 3 a.m. on Monday. Medic initially transported the victim to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, but the victim was later pronounced dead.

The man accused of stabbing another man on a CATS light railcar in December 2025 is now facing federal charges, the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office announced.
Court records reviewed by WCNC Charlotte on Dec. 11, 2025, show that 33-year-old Oscar Solorzano is now charged with committing a terrorist attack or violence against a mass transportation system. He is also charged with re-entry of a removed alien. These charges are on top of the state charges Solorzano-Garcia is already facing.
Federal immigration officials had previously lodged an arrest detainer for Solorzano, who is from Honduras and in the United States illegally. The Department of Homeland Security said Solorzano was removed from the country in March 2018. He was arrested while crossing the border in 2021 and was again removed, according to DHS. It's unclear when Solorzano reentered the country for the third time. He's been deported twice before. It's unclear when Solorzano reentered the country for the third time. Notably, in 2016, he was deported after stabbing another victim in Florida.

Mecklenburg County Court records show a man who was the victim in a stabbing on the CATS light rail was arrested on Wednesday.
Kenyon Dobie, 24, faces charges of assault serious bodily injury (SBI), assault on a pregnant woman, assault on a female, domestic violence, and three counts of communicating threats.
