Huntersville's planning board voted 6-2 to recommend the denial of the Lagoona Bay project Tuesday.
The vote comes as neighbors continue to fight against the development from happening.
Jake Palillo, the developer behind the massive 300-acre project, proposed several changes during a public meeting last week. Those changes included revamped housing plans, road improvements and the addition of 20 affordable housing units.
Palillo told the planning board Tuesday night he will commit at least $3 million to road improvements. However, several members said the plan is too dense for the area and they couldn't support it in its planned location.

There's an early look at state testing scores in math for high school students at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and the results aren’t great.
The results show less than 10% of high school students tested were considered career-or-college-ready based on math scores.
“It is disappointing. That is a really low number," CMS Superintendent Crystal Hill said to board members Tuesday night.
The scores are typically not released by the state until fall but were released for CMS on an unofficial basis to compare results to previous years.

One-by-one, nearly two dozen victims stood in a courtroom to confront the person who pleaded guilty to murdering five people and injuring 17 others in an attack last year on a nightclub that served as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado Springs.
Some cried, others seethed with anger. They called him coward, monster, terrorist.
Family and friends of the deceased and survivors who witnessed Anderson Lee Aldrich unleash terror at Club Q a week before Thanksgiving made sure during Monday’s emotional hearing that Aldrich won’t start a life prison sentence without confronting the truth of the many lives ruined or inalterably changed.
“This monster next to me decided to come into my job and our community safe space and begin hunting us down as if our lives were meaningless,” said Michael Anderson, who was bartending that night. “He has broken this community into pieces that may never be repaired."
Aldrich pleaded guilty in state court to five counts of murder and 46 counts of attempted murder – one for each person at Club Q during the attack. Aldrich also pleaded no contest to two hate crimes.

Two construction workers moving traffic cones were struck by a car on Monday.
The crash happened on NC Highway 150 near Vinewood Road in Catawba County on Monday around 3:35 p.m., according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Two construction crew flaggers were hit by a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Jerry Lee Johnson, 80.
One of the flaggers, Ryan Tanner, 23, died from injuries suffered in the crash. The other flagger was transported to a local medical center and is in stable condition.
A member of the flag crew was in the roadway with a stop sign during the crash, troopers said.
Troopers say alcohol was not a contributing factor. Charges are pending against Johnson as the investigation continues.

A piece of Charlotte's history is nearing its final day of business.
Green's Lunch, the Uptown hot dog restaurant, announced on Sunday that it will close down on Wednesday, June 28. The move will end a 97-year run for the restaurant which opened in 1926.
The restaurant's location at the corner of W 4th Street and S Mint Street was put up for sale for $3 million in December 2022. No information was publicly released about the sale.
In May, Green's Lunch posted on social media debunking rumors that the restaurant closed in February and assured they would remain open. However, they are now closing just over a month after that post.
"We would like to thank our loyal customers for these wonderful 97 years, also for the love and support that you have given us thru our recent loss," wrote the restaurant owners on Facebook. "We will always remember your smiles, hugs, and laughter, you will remain in our hearts as our family."

A renowned Titanic expert, a world-record holding adventurer, two members of one of Pakistan's wealthiest families and the CEO of the company leading an expedition to the world's most famous shipwreck were killed when a small submersible suffered a "catastrophic implosion" in the Atlantic Ocean.
The submersible Titan was reported overdue Sunday night about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, according to Canada’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center, spurring a desperate international rescue effort. Rescuers were racing against the clock because the oxygen supply was expected to run out by approximately 6 a.m. Thursday.

The Charlotte Area Transit System bus driver, who police said got into a shootout with a passenger last month, will likely not face charges at this time.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shared that information Wednesday, noting the expectation of no charges came after consultation with Mecklenburg District Attorney's Office.
Surveillance video from the Charlotte Area Transit System shows the May 18 shooting. Authorities said the incident occurred after Omarri Tobias, a passenger, asked David Fullard, the driver, to make an unscheduled stop as the bus traveled through Charlotte's Steele Creek neighborhood.
When Fullard refused, Tobias can be heard on the recording taunting Fullard, who continues to drive. Then, Tobias can be seen pulling a gun, and moments later, Fullard pulls out his own gun. Gunfire is then exchanged as the bus drives off the roadway.

The developer of the controversial Lagoona Bay project was back in front of the public and Huntersville town leaders during a meeting Tuesday.
Project developer Jake Palillo and his company had 68 pages worth of proposed changes to the project. Among the changes: Accessibility improvements, revamped housing plans, roadway improvements to reduce traffic impact in the area, and the addition of 20 affordable housing units.
The massive $800 million project would turn an empty plot of land along Sam Furr Road into an almost 300-acre community with membership fees. The development would include a huge lagoon with water sports, dining and retail options, as well as a luxury hotel and convention center.
Lagoona Bay would also create hundreds of housing options.

New Indy attorneys went before a federal judge on Tuesday to push to have one of the many lawsuits against them dismissed.
But outside the Matthew J. Perry, Jr. Courthouse in Columbia, South Carolina, neighboring residents of the paper mill say the pervasive smell is still making them sick.
“It’s like when that smell comes, I have to go in the house, my eyes itch, my ears, my head, you can tell that it’s toxic,” Bonnie Lins, who recently moved near the paper mill, said.
Tuesday, New Indy pushed to dismiss a lawsuit filed by several York County and Lancaster County residents. The lawsuit alleges the paper mill failed to apply for a ‘prevention of significant deterioration’ or PSD permit, and instead turned off its steam stripper, which helps control air pollution.

On Tuesday, the House Health committee will hear a proposed committee substitute for Senate Bill 631. It would ban any UNC or UNC-affiliated healthcare facility, or any other public hospital, or any provider under contract to such a facility, from providing any gender-affirming medical care to a minor, including puberty blockers and hormone treatment. It would also block the use of state funds to pay for any such care.
