#8 "Queering Giftedness" with Dr. Matt Zakreski

Listen Later

Dr. Matt Zakreski (who was fortunate enough to have Maya Angelou as a professor!) is a doctor of psychology, professor, speaker, and the creator of the Neurodiversity Collective. In this episode, Dr. Matt joins me for a spirited conversation about giftedness, ableism, privilege, sex/intimacy, and the unique challenges of twice and thrice exceptional kids. Students who consistently require intensive intervention (special education) and intensive enrichment (gifted education) beyond the general classroom are traditionally referred to as 2e students. Gifted education considers other learning exceptionalities to include, but not limited to autism,  ADHD, and dyslexia.  The 3e model illuminates the intersectionality of giftedness with other learning exceptionalities and marginalized social categories, including queerness , and is approached using a social, emotional, and cultural lens.  As Dr. Matt explains, "if you are working with the gifted and neurodivergent population, you better be prepared to deal with the queer population as well".
